India declares new 'Delta plus' variant of concern

The country has declared that a new variant, identified locally as "Delta plus", is one of concern.

Two dozen cases have been detected in three states, including the state of Maharashtra, federal health secretary Rajesh Bhushan told a news conference.

The ministry said Delta plus showed increased transmissibility, and it has told states to up their testing efforts.

The original Delta variant was first discovered in India and has managed to spread to the UK, now making up 99% of new confirmed cases.

Is this the Nepal variant or another one?

It means that we need to stop our borders being as strong as sieve for the foreseeable future to decrease the chances of a variant seeding here and buy us time to deal with any possible new variant that might threaten our vaccines.

Is it vaccine resistant?

I’ll worry if it is. Until then, no.

We cannot stop variants, nor can we stop a virus that is already endemic from spreading. Mutations can occur anywhere, including in the UK, so closing our borders now is like trying to stop air from getting into a building by shutting the front door. The only ways through this now are either vaccination or prophylaxis.

New variants will at some point be good news surely?

I remember a medic friend explained to me years ago how viruses usually get weaker. The stronger, deadlier strains that make people very sick or kill them don't get to spread as widely as the host isn't moving around. The weaker strains leave their host well enough to be out and about meeting lots of people and spreading the virus.
I hope it's true and covid downgrades itself at some point.

Each variant is becoming more infectious than the last. Hopefully we get to a point where Delta maximus the great III++ appears and infects everbody on the planet at the same time. Then we can be done with it all.

I'm guessing this is the Nepal Variant - Delta with the added South African mutation that's more resistant to vaccines.
