Can we really just stop life to preserve every life?

Everyone whom I know is more scared of the Governments reaction to Covid, than Covid itself.

The vaccinations are the most protection we are ever going to get, and yes people will still die.

Why can't we just accept that people die of Covid like we accept thousands each year who have died through flu and other preventable diseases?Millions and millions of people have died through smoking and alcohol, costing millions to the NHS. Yet we haven't banned them?
Viruses mutate and Covid is no different. They're will be variants indefinitely. Are we to cower behind our sofas every time a new one is announced?
The media in full force say how serious the new strain is, then lo and behold, weeks later it shows the vaccines are still offering high protection.
Public Health have started there is no correlation between the Indian variant and hospital admissions.
There is also a report that over 80% of Covid infections were caught in hospital, yet hospitality is are still targeted with table service, masks and track and trace.

When did this become about cases? not deaths and hospital admissions like it was to begin with?

The media and government have done well to completely scare people into submission. This is no longer about protection, its control and power.

Mumsnet is the only place is seems where people want these restrictions to carry on.

Everyone in real life has had enough and can see through this bullshit for what it really is!

I am with you.

OMalleyTheAlleyKit · 14/06/2021 23:09

Agree.

Get the rest of the vaccinations done and start life again.

Who cares of people catch covid if we're all vaccinated and it's just a cold to 99.9%.

Its time to get back to a new normality.

Whysolong7 · 14/06/2021 23:10

With respect when you say this...

Mumsnet is the only place is seems where people want these restrictions to carry on.

Do you not think it’s just that in RL you hang around with like minded people, or people who politely don’t disagree?

whymewhyme · 14/06/2021 23:15

100 % agree!

bellsbuss · 14/06/2021 23:17

I'm done too , in rl I don't know anyone in my friendship group following the rules anymore. I was chatting to a school mum at pickup today and she was saying how annoyed she was that rain was forecast for the weekend as she was supposed to be meeting a friend for a walk. I asked her why she couldn't meet her at home or a cafe/pub etc and she said because it's not safe. I just felt sad that she felt this way. There are some people who would be happy to carry on living with restrictions but I think once all the vulnerable have had both vaccines we have to get back to normal as this isn't going away.

RedSoloCup · 14/06/2021 23:17

Agree fed up and done, esp want the end to bloody masks but been told that could be years 😢😢😢😢

RuggerHug · 14/06/2021 23:20

Not everyone is vaccinated yet.

sprinkleyumnut · 14/06/2021 23:23

Once every person in the UK who wants to be vaccinated has both that is it. Nothing will ever be better than that. Boosters every year if needed but life will need to go back to normal.

Iggi999 · 14/06/2021 23:24

Are you vaccinated OP? Twice? Because not everybody is.
And please don't parrot "the vulnerable are" You can't know how Covid will affect you until you have it.
We are so nearly there with the vaccines.

MercyBooth · 14/06/2021 23:24

Well ppl seemed very happy with thousands of people dying due to their disability benefits being cut.

They also wernt bothered about the fact that flu or a simple cold could actually kill people like my DH (COPD) BUT neither DH nor i would expect the world to stop for it. Or for ppl to wear face masks. All we would ever ask is that ppl dont visit us if they have a cold. Im fucking sick of being treated like a bio hazard when no one gave a fuck worth a damn before.

DH and i both object to people like himself being used to emotionally blackmail others when no one gave a shit before.

And that default setting will be back after this is over IF it ever is.

SonnetForSpring · 14/06/2021 23:24

Because if we don't try to control covid, it will destroy our health service. What is so difficult to understand about that? Health care is a basic human right. It has to be protected.

Cafeaulait27 · 14/06/2021 23:24

Did you watch the press conference? They clearly explain why they need to do it in that.

I think it’s highly unlikely that the government want to keep everything closed.

I’m as disappointed as everyone, but after watching the briefing today I can understand why they have to delay,

greenlynx · 14/06/2021 23:24

I don’t want the restrictions to carry on but atm my life is not bad and I don’t want it to change. During the last month I and DD enjoyed shopping, going out, visiting places. I managed to book dental appointment and took DD for a transition visit. I’m scared to go into lockdown again even a soft one and the possibility of this is very realistic because of the current numbers. I don’t want NHS to have a huge backlog of appointments and surgeries. I haven’t seen my parents for 2 years, they live abroad so no, I’m not happy at all, I just don’t want it to be worse. I can wait a bit.

awaketoosoon · 14/06/2021 23:25

Yes, I don't think we can expect normality until everyone who wants as had the 2nd jab. I've had both so happy to be out & about but can understand why others may be reluctant.

SonnetForSpring · 14/06/2021 23:26

It's very melodramatic to say the current restrictions stop life. A sense of perspective is seriously missing from MN these days.

twelly · 14/06/2021 23:26

I think we need to get back to normal. The young have especially suffered. As long as we have open borders any restrictions are pointless anyway

MercyBooth · 14/06/2021 23:29

Im not personally affected by the restrictions as they are at the moment. But many people will be.

Shelovesamystery · 14/06/2021 23:30

100% agree, I was done a long time ago tbh. I wear a mask when I have to, for show of course, but I cannot wait to see the back of them. I've given up social distancing in public now (never done it with friends/family) because barely anyone else seems to and I'm not dancing around people like a fucking lemon when I couldn't actually care less if they came and coughed in my face anyway.

The ones cowering in fear shout louder than the rest unfortunately and I suspect that they are the ones keeping us in this shitty limbo. The government doesn't want anymore hate than its already got so they carry on with this farce to appease the hysterical.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/06/2021 23:31

We’re not stopping life to preserve every life. We’ve never done so and as far as I can tell don’t appear to have any plans to do so.

If you think that’s what is happening you haven’t been paying attention, either to what has been happening in the last year, or to what is happening now and what is being said.

Clearly if we were bothered about doing so, or were acting based on cases we wouldn’t just be delaying further unlocking now, we’d have reversed the road map several weeks ago.

Re: the cases caught in hospital - it’s an aerosol spread virus. Unless we stop patients breathing in the same room as each other then nosocomial is related to community spread outside hospital. The more people who have covid in the general community, the more likely somebody is to be admitted, or be visiting a patient, or go to work while incubating covid or thinking they just have hay fever or a cold.

Nobody really wants the restrictions to carry on, but the more we fail to deal with it properly the more we have to keep reintroducing restrictions to control the out of control growth when cases are high. But I suspect you actually know that.

MiaMc · 14/06/2021 23:31

I think it’s all been explained quite clearly.
It was always part of the roadmap plan that a number of tests would have to be met to relax more measures at each step. So far the “tests” have been passed in order to ease restrictions but not this time unfortunately due to Delta.

I think the point has been made quite clearly that it would be foolish to open everything now when we’re just about to see what trajectory we’re on with respect to increasing Delta cases. It seems much less inconvenient to do that rather than have an “oh fuck” moment in 2 or 3 weeks and have to reintroduce some restrictions.

I feel dreadfully sorry for people in the UK. I’m in the US and we are essentially back to normal—things have been open in my town since June 2020 and we haven’t taken any steps backwards.

I wish to god things were different in the UK. I haven’t seen my parents for 17 months. I was so hopeful they’d be able to travel to the US for August to see me and my family, but I’m feeling less and less optimistic as the days pass.

katfold · 14/06/2021 23:35

If restrictions save a single life they are worth it. And that's before you even consider Long Covid. Saving life is so important, and we must never ease restrictions until we know for sure every life have been saved. If the economy collapses, jobs are lost, it is all worth it if it extends just one life by even a day. Maybe some us just care more, maybe that's just how we are made Smile

MiaMc · 14/06/2021 23:35

And no, we’re not hashtagging “I’m done” because it’s been done to death ooh, for maybe a year now.

Sylvan92 · 14/06/2021 23:35

A lot of people’s plans have been ruined tonight. I know a lot of year 11s who have been really excited about their prom on July 12th, after having a really crap year, and now have nothing to look forward to, in addition to being out of pocket.

I'm so jealous looking at Texas and Florida.
