I can’t bear the thought of another full lockdown but it seems inevitable

I’ve only just this week been allowed to see sister without social distancing, as she lives in residential care, had a lovely meal and a big hug but at the end all I could think was, will it be another year before we can meet again? She’s been hugely, horribly affected by this virus - she’s dreadfully ill through anxiety - and has been only just told this week she can see two relatives and one friend, and she might be allowed back to day care services the end of this month - first time since Feb 2020 .

I can’t bear the thought of another year indoors, no haircuts, no socialising, no shopping, no travel, no seeing sister or friends or family ...

I live in a tiny village with shit public transport that was largely stoped over both lockdowns ... can’t bear another year in this three mile square and relying on online delivery and zoom ... GP rang this morning and even yapping to her I thought, how lovely it would be to see someone else face to face - most friends and family are still heavily avoiding all socialising, this is my experience of most people now that there’s a lot of fear and anxiety around covid .

I realise restrictions are necessary and probably inevitable, and things could be so so much worse - but I’m struggling so much now . Finding I’m dreading getting out of bed as I keep thinking, what’s coming next?

I find it better to do what I can in the here and now and not dwell on the future. Go out and enjoy all the freedom we have at the moment. I have to say my friends and family are embracing being able to socialise so I am able to see people face to face now which is excellent. I am not seeing much fear and anxiety at all.

Why does it seem inevitable? Nearly 80% of the adult population are vaccinated

NannyAndJohn · 04/06/2021 17:26

Yep, it's coming.

Cases doubling every four days means we'll hit 100,000 a day by the 21st June.

Best we all accept that we'll be spending the rest of the year in lockdown instead of sticking our heads in the sand and pretending that everything's okay.

Cowbells · 04/06/2021 17:27

What on earth is the point of vaccination then?

NannyAndJohn · 04/06/2021 17:27

@ChocOrange1

Why does it seem inevitable? Nearly 80% of the adult population are vaccinated
Fewer than 40% of the population are fully vaccinated.

And we need over 85% of the population fully vaccinated if we want any chance of keeping R below 1.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/06/2021 17:28

I am choosing to believe that vaccinations will mean the NHS won't be overstretched and the death toll will be much lower. I am of the opinion we need to learn to live with the virus and not shut everything down the moment cases start to rise.

Cripesitsthegasman19 · 04/06/2021 17:28

What's the point of living like this? Not willing to become a prisoner in my own house again.

Bluntness100 · 04/06/2021 17:28

Op,I think you’ve misunderstood? Lockdowns are to prevent the nhs being breached, not to eradicate Covid. The amount of cases is now a minor indicator, it’s hospitalisations and deaths. These are both still declining. As such there is no indications of any further lock downs.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 04/06/2021 17:29

We're not coming back to the UK if they pull this lockdown shit again. Enough is enough.

user1493494961 · 04/06/2021 17:29

Surely it depends on hospitalisations.

inmyslippers · 04/06/2021 17:29

I won't be going into lockdown

Bluntness100 · 04/06/2021 17:30

I’m guessing this is sarcastic?
Newgirls · 04/06/2021 17:30

It’s over 50% adult population fully vaccinated (not 40))

ChocOrange1 · 04/06/2021 17:30

50% are fully vaccinated according to the government dashboard. And even the partial vaccination cuts deaths and hospitalisation.

Bluntness100 · 04/06/2021 17:30

@user1493494961

Surely it depends on hospitalisations.
Yes, hospitalisation and deaths which are still declining.
Turquoisesol · 04/06/2021 17:30

But what if hospital admissions start to go up? Learning to live with the virus would have to then mean a much higher capacity or flexibility within the nhs to cope with surges of Covid cases ? Which we don’t currently have

MiddlesexGirl · 04/06/2021 17:31

We may be largely locked in our own country but it's highly unlikely we'll have another full lockdown. The Pfizer jab has just been approved for 12-15 year olds and the vaccination programme has been hugely effective in cutting hospitalisations. So really no need to be despondent. As a nation we are well on the way to pretty much full protection against existing variants and the scientists have been very quick at responding to new strains.

XenoBitch · 04/06/2021 17:31

Same here, OP. I am just trying to live for the moment right now... making the most of the things we can still do at the moment.

If we lockdown again, I already know I will bend the rules and still have a friend in my house. It is the only way I survived the last one.

FontyMcFontface · 04/06/2021 17:32

I won't be going into lockdown

Might kind of have to though if everything’s shut- schools, workplaces and shops. And the police are enforcing the stay home policy like they were last two times here at least.

TortoiseShed · 04/06/2021 17:32

Ah balls, really? I thought we might avoid it. Hope you're wrong op, but prepare for the worst etc.

SonnetForSpring · 04/06/2021 17:32

It's not sarcastic. So many on MN don't seen to live and the real world and have a scooby what is happening. The third wave has started and the gov are doing nothing. By the time they do something, it will probably require a lock down.

Sparklfairy · 04/06/2021 17:32

Exactly what @Bluntness100 said. The point of lockouts was to 'protect the NHS'. Cases with low hospitalisations/deaths mean about as much as flu cases or the common cold.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 04/06/2021 17:32

If we lockdown again then someone will have to explain what the point of a vaccine is.
I certainly won't be sticking to any new lockdown rules

FontyMcFontface · 04/06/2021 17:33

I’d bend the rules and have people in my house but I don’t think anyone I know would do that.

Sparklfairy · 04/06/2021 17:33

Bloody autocorrect. Lockdowns not lockouts Hmm
