Does anyone else think the trial club nights at Liverpool are a mistake?

Trial club nights 6000 people no masks or social distancing. You have to have had negative lateral test before attending and are 'encouraged' not compulsory for pcr test 5 days after.
I think this is too soon to be trialling large crowds when people can't even go in their mums house indoors

I think the 5 day test should have been part of the deal, but I guess it's difficult to enforce. Hopefully the vast majority will have the sense to get the test.

Maybe the carrot is that if they do they'll be invited another time?

I'm not exactly convinced it's going to tell us very much we don't already know tbh. We already know you need a significant load of Covid for the LFT to pick it up & you can pass it on with a smaller load. And it's luck of the draw whether you pass it in or not...

Being able to do LFT in the 5 days before seems nuts too. That's days & days you could catch it.

I hope they had a great time, but I also hope they do the follow up test - I wonder what the follow up will be when someone tests positive 6000 people over 2 days...doubt they'll track them down & how they'll determine 'close contact' in that environment???

I think it’s a great idea, we do need to find out where the risky places are and how we can mitigate the risk with testing etc. In Liverpool a few weeks ago there was an outdoor event called River of Light and it was packed each night, albeit outdoors. People were kicking off saying it shouldn’t have been allowed to run but there’s been no spike in Liverpool and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this event wasn’t a trial of sorts, because the timing of it was odd.

sashagabadon · 01/05/2021 07:45

I think it’s great. So nice to see what a lovely time they were all having.

Whinge · 01/05/2021 07:45

@GelfBride

I think it's far too early and a crazy idea.
Why do you think it's far too early?

I'm thrilled for the young people who were able to experience this, their happiness and joy was lovely to see.

Iknowtheanswer · 01/05/2021 07:47

You get that it's a trial? I think that it's fantastic.

Blowingagale · 01/05/2021 07:48

@LaurieFairyCake

It's come before family indoors so we can REALLY test it

I was so happy for those young people 🙏

A really good point. Trials such as this and the sports fans would not work if you can’t tell whether the fans/clubbers caught or spread due to mixing with family instead.

I'd like to think that anyone who takes part afterwards will have to do a follow up survey/test if symptoms.

I won't be interested in mixing in large crowds for a while, but it's a trial - we need to find out if people can do certain jobs and enjoy large events safely. Not sure the size of the trial, but one was carried out in Spain and supposedly successful.

toolatetooearly · 01/05/2021 07:50

It's a controlled trial, not a wild illegal rave in a field. And they need to start the testing now, as on June 23rd these events will theoretically be allowed once more.

BluebellsGreenbells · 01/05/2021 07:51

There are so many trials, we have to try these things and the young looked happy to be part of it. I should think by now they know and understand the risks involved.

Everyone’s story will be different, so someone living in a couple WFH for example with be different to a school teacher living with grandparent ms who are unvaccinated.

I hope they had a great night!

itsgettingwierd · 01/05/2021 07:53

I actually think as mad as it seems trialling mass gatherings when you still can't meet your family inside seems - it's a great thing.

If mass gatherings are ok then we know anything lesser is likely to be far less risk and therefore ok.

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 01/05/2021 07:54

There's no point in trialling it if you wait until it's meant to be allowed in any case Hmm. Trials take time to set up and analyse the data and consequences. They need to get started now if the information is going to be useful in making the decision about whether to end all restrictions in June.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 01/05/2021 07:56

Probably less risk than everyone seated at the crucible in Sheffield for the snooker! The venue was very well ventilated and controlled. Surprised no one on Mumsnet has brought that up yet Hmm

Ikeameatballs · 01/05/2021 07:57

As others have said, these trials need to happen now so that any spike in cases can be linked to the event more easily, rather than eg mixing indoors, and so that any spike can be contained, again because mixing is not allowed.

We need to know how we can come out of this.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 01/05/2021 07:58

Brought the snooker up rather than the rave I mean!

chocolateorangeinhaler · 01/05/2021 07:58

Nope. Life needs to startup again. I'm too old for clubbing but I hope whoever goes has a really good time.

daseychain · 01/05/2021 07:58

It looked amazing and it was great to see so many enjoying themselves without restriction.

You're missing the point of it. It's a trial to monitor how successful this type of event would be in the future.

Were you also annoyed about similar trials for the snooker and FA cup final or is this one wrong because it's young people partying?

LemonCake79 · 01/05/2021 07:59

@Thatswatshesaid

It’s wonderful. When I was young dancing and socialising was a huge part of my life. I can only imagine how crazy that party’s going to be! They will be literally screaming with joy. Wish I was young enough to do something like that again.
^^ this. I hope they have a great time.
Badbadbunny · 01/05/2021 07:59

I can't see the point. Infection rates are very low. The participants are being tested. So it's not a realistic experiment. I can foretell the result that it wont cause a spike. How can it if none of the participants have covid? How can that be representative of how it will be in 3 months time when you cant test huge numbers of people if all nightclubs reopen as normal and in areas where infection rates are rising again. It's absolutely pointless.

Badbadbunny · 01/05/2021 08:00

@Ikeameatballs

As others have said, these trials need to happen now so that any spike in cases can be linked to the event more easily, rather than eg mixing indoors, and so that any spike can be contained, again because mixing is not allowed.

We need to know how we can come out of this.

If theyre testing people and infection rates are low in the community, how can it cause a spike?
HeddaGarbled · 01/05/2021 08:03

Would it help if you think of it as scientific research?

megletthesecond · 01/05/2021 08:04

all I had been pondering the snooker. They were all masked, spread out and had negative tests though.
The scientists need to try different scenarios.

JimBobNoJob · 01/05/2021 08:04

Well if they are willing to test the waters before our restrictions are lifted then I’m all for it.
Much better to do it this way rather than lift our restrictions, let us get back to normal then finding a couple of months down the line numbers are back up and we go back into lockdown again.

MargosKaftan · 01/05/2021 08:06

Well that's the point isn't it? Infection rates are low and everyone has been tested before going in. So it should be a room full of people who don't have covid. The whole point is to see if the theory works.

Could the LFTs miss some positives who are asymptomatic and if so, do they risk spreading it? Keeping them in masks and 2m apart would not be a real life test. Are rates in the community as low as we think, or are there now more asymptomatic cases?

There will need to be trials to see how this works.

I lot of people on MN want to follow the science without any thought about how scientists will get the data to make their conclusions, without data and evidence they are just making guesses.

Unicornish · 01/05/2021 08:07

Bloody hell.

It was a trial. Trials have to run BEFORE the general opening up or they're no help.

It was lovely to see so many excited young people partying. I hope they had a brilliant time.

longwayoff · 01/05/2021 08:08

It's a trial. Wouldnt go near it myself.
