Any good news regarding the South african variant and the vaccines?

TruelyWonder · 01/05/2021 22:05

South African variant off the top of my heard from memory.

All the vaccines apert from AZ have shown a slight drop in effect against transmission bit still work well enough to hinder transmission.

AZ did have the bad data for transmission from African trial. However the general thought is that the trial was done with a 3/4 week gap. As we know AZ needs longer to get its full antibody effect that is thought to have been the problem. The country doing the trial needed a vaccine with quicker effect as using on health staff so dropped it.

The other thing with that trial is it was a lab dish test. Not real world data. So between a longer gap and the normal body immune system (T cells extra). AZ shouldn't be much different than the others against the south African variant transmission. Also the hospitalisation and death reduction is expected to be very good still. I don't think they have given us new evidence for this yet but could be wrong.

Dementedswan · 01/05/2021 22:12

That sounds very positive. Thank you .

Furries · 01/05/2021 22:27

I am SO wishing I was decades younger. And that I lived in Liverpool. And that I’d got tickets for the rave over the last couple of days.

Would loved to have experienced what I reckon was pure joy of all those youngsters getting together with great tunes being blasted out. I’m far too old for that now!

Hopefully the data gathered by on-site scientists will really help with how more entertainment can be opened up. The younger generations deserve being able to resume their socialising. Well, we all do, obviously! Mine will be a bit more sedate though 😂

TruelyWonder · 01/05/2021 22:30

No problem. Here is a chart too.

Remember what I said in other post about AZ effect. Also this chart is just about transmission. Not hospitalisation and death. Which should still be well protected from with all the vaccines plus the wonderful memory of the T cells.

TruelyWonder · 01/05/2021 22:31

Forgot to add the chart😂

Yes they do look joyous ❤

Apart from the photo of the middle aged expert in a suit and anorak that had to be there to observe. He looked a bit embarrassed and out of place 😂

PomLikeTheBattle · 01/05/2021 22:38

I think my clubbing days are sadly behind me although I think I do still have a pair of velvet hot pants somewhere.

Just in case.

@TruelyWonder - did make me chuckle about the on-site scientists, it’s one heck of a lab rat experiment!

Furries · 01/05/2021 22:41

@PomLikeTheBattle - you never know! Us women like to be prepared for any eventuality.

PomLikeTheBattle · 01/05/2021 22:43

@Furries I think I still have my trusty 501s too!

10%? I know this is a positive thread but I find that worrying. So alongside the increased risk of vaccination itself, it's actually not that great against variants 😨

I agree

I hope they had a blast

That is from the South African variant and I explained why. They only used a 3/4 week gap between doses. We know that the AZ needs 8 to 12 weeks to reach full antibody strength.

Plus it was only a lab dish test not a real world trial. So no immune system and T cell vaccation memory to help out.

Plus that is just for transmission. Az is still going to be very good against hospitalisation and death.

In fact so far AZ is better than Pfizer for prevention of hospitalisations and deaths. Not much in it but still.

TruelyWonder · 01/05/2021 23:46

Velvet hot pants. Now that is brave. Maybe you need to give them a go once the pandemic is over. After all this anything goes I reckon.

If you don't fancy a night club then you can always wear them to Tesco Grin

ChocOrange1 · 02/05/2021 07:28

Please note the words historic cases. As in from cases involving older people.
Historic cases aren't necessarily from older people, but just from people who had the jab a while ago. They could be health care workers, unpaid carers, ECV young people who had the jab early in the schedule.

ChocOrange1 · 02/05/2021 07:35

There hasn't been a death in my local authority area (125,000 people) since 8th March.

Case numbers are now so low that it is becoming difficult/irrelevant to calculate R.

PCR positivity has dropped to 0.8, the lowest since last July.

PomLikeTheBattle · 02/05/2021 07:53

I was young, thin and drunk 😂

Yep I worded that badly

Clot data reported is not date of clot cases but report date.

3.5 million jabs this week Smile

@TruelyWonder

3.5 million jabs this week Smile

Does that mean the supply issues have gone away a bit? Haven't seen an update on that recently.

HolmeH · 02/05/2021 23:07

I volunteer in a vaccine centre & we all really wish they’d open up the vaccine to the over 30’s now orr front line staff over 30. Or start a proper wait list where we can ring those at the top at lunch time to come on down for all the spare appointments or no shows.

We have vaccines for first jabs (AZ) but it’s so quiet.. it’s such a waste of everyone’s time. We could be jabbing the next category! I’m at a big football stadium up north. Anyone else like this?! Our area has good takeup but there are 3 mass vaccine sites plus 2x Boots & many GPs also vaccinating 🤷🏼‍♀️

TruelyWonder · 02/05/2021 23:41

1990s All I know is supply this week was obviously very good,

That is interesting Holmes. I can imagine at the rate we are going after next week should be the 30s range if not started unofficially.

TeaInTheGarden · 03/05/2021 00:21

@HolmeH that’s really interesting. I have my first volunteer shift at our local centre tomorrow. I am 37 and unvaccinated, I asked about spare doses when I signed up for the shift and my name is on the end of day list. Which is of course no guarantee, but fingers crossed.
Although obviously I’m not far off my real turn now anyway, so I’m not too worried either way, I don’t mind waiting and checking the website multiple times a day.... 😂
Would be nice to join the masses sooner rather than later though!
