AZ side effects

AZ yesterday. Have to say I think I’ve just had the illest night of my life. The bed is literally sodden. Chills are an understatement. OH was the same. Headache now but getting better. Don’t want to put anyone off. Delighted to have got it. Just wondered how many were the same? And what the reaction is likely to be after the 2nd jab?

It sounds like the Moderna has less side effects.

The advice given at the vaccination centres is that side effects are more likely after the second dose. So, until more people have had their second dose, it's too early to tell.

@TheYearOfSmallThings

I wonder if people are more likely to post on threads like this when they have side effects?

Everyone at work got vaccinated with no effects or minor ones. Likewise the relatives, friends and neighbours who have had the jab have felt ok after it. Nobody I know in real life has needed time off work, or had anything worse than a vague chilly/achy feeling within 48 hours of being vaccinated.

I think these threads do get skewed in the way you say.
CrazyHorse · 18/04/2021 10:34

Well if I'd had no side effects I wouldn't have posted at all.

tenlittlecygnets · 18/04/2021 10:46

@Meredusoleil

Of those of you who had no to barely any side effects, have you had the regular flu jab? If so, what were your reactions to that? Trying to work out my chances of bad side effects based on my flu jab response.
Yes, I have the flu jab every year. Don't react to that either.
Meredusoleil · 18/04/2021 12:31

Interesting comments, especially about those who didn't have side effects not posting. But then I suppose, the thread is entitled 'AZ side effects', so logically if you didn't have any, why would you comment 🤷🏻‍♀️

Think both dh and I will go ahead and turn up on the day and fingers crossed all goes well afterwards 🤞Although who know if dh will even be allowed to have the jab given his allergies and past reaction to the flu jab 🤔

Absolutely. More insidiously I wonder whether reading about people having bad reactions makes you more likely to experience one yourself.

I had a fever and felt pretty rubbish from 12 to 24 hours after mine. I don't remember the last time I had a fever before that, I think it's always more unpleasant than you remember. However for me it was nothing compared with a chest infection or flu or something that knocks you out for days. It did help that I didn't have to get up at 5am and solo parent toddlers...

Chosennone · 18/04/2021 14:01

4 people from my friendship group have had theirs since Friday. None of us have more than a fuzzy head and a bit tired. I have been up and at it this morning and am flagging a bit now.

Floweree · 18/04/2021 14:10

They do ask if you have any known allergies, but by that point obviously already there etc. I know GPs aren't giving out generic advice, but I'd give them a ring in his case.

DiscoStusMoonboots · 18/04/2021 14:13

I was sick as a dog for 12 hours with a temperature of over 39. As soon as the thirteenth hour rolled around, i started to feel much better. Hope that's the case for you.

cfs6422 · 18/04/2021 14:45

I had my AZ at 9.30 yesterday and starting feeling cold at about 6.30 last night. Couldn't get warm, hot bath didn't help, ended up in bed under multiple layers. Then the fever started - I went through two pairs of pyjamas in an hour, literally soaked through, and it carried on until morning when it eased a bit. I've now got a shocking headache (paracetamol and ibuprofen not touching it) and I'm hot again. Hoping I'm ok for work tomorrow. As far as I know I haven't had Covid previously.

I'd have it again though.

Mazig · 18/04/2021 14:52

I was really anxious about having it. Had it on Thursday afternoon and already had a headache when I went for the jab which was caused by the stress I think.

I've had basically no side effects. A slightly sore arm and as others have said I felt a bit tired and fuzzy headed the next day, but nothing to stop me carrying on with normal life. The stress headache lingered until I took some nurofen and hasn't come back.

Back to normal exercise routine on Saturday morning and felt completely normal since other than bruised arm.

I'm still worried about the blood clot risk because I'm generally health anxious but I'm glad I was brave enough to get it done despite being worried.

WednesburyPrinciple · 18/04/2021 15:30

Had first dose of AZ yesterday and all I’ve had is a sore arm and the fuzzy head / tiredness others have mentioned. Was expecting much worse!

CurlySnout · 18/04/2021 16:15

It's really interesting isn't it? I wonder why different people have such different reactions? Anyone medical here who that could shed light? Slept most of the day and had paracetamol to keep my temp down. I'd have it anytime again though, of course, I wouldn't want to be sick with covid. I presume the reaction is to do with how people's immune systems kick in? Any other indicators? blood groups etc?

ceilingsand · 18/04/2021 16:27

I was unwell the day after the jab. I also had covid late last spring. Covid was 100 times worse!

lineandsinker · 18/04/2021 16:31

I had racing heart / almost fainting / head rushes / tingling lips about 5 minutes after having the Pfizer - lasted for nearly an hour. Wasn’t anaphylaxis but doctor said they thought it was panic, though, on reflection, I’m not convinced of this as I wasn’t particularly worked up about having the jab.

I’ve made the decision not to have my second jab because I just don’t want to repeat this episode or, worse, experience something more severe. I know some people will come along and say COVID is much worse but, at my age, my risk profile is low and I’m going to hope that the immunity I’ve acquired through the first dose will give me some protection.

Not sure if I’d consider a different brand if mixing is approved in the future. Unfortunately, I’m 30, so the AZ is out of the question as suffer with migraines with aura so feel my clotting risk is higher.

poppycat10 · 18/04/2021 16:32

Just coming back to say that I don't appear to have had any side effects, I had AZ on Sunday.

I have never had the flu vaccine, the last vaccine I had was for tetanus in 1997 and I think I just had a sore arm.

poppycat10 · 18/04/2021 16:32

I had AZ on Thursday.

Pinchoftums · 18/04/2021 16:34

1st one about 4 days of shiteness
2nd about a night.

Had covid last year was very ill for about 6 weeks so felt not that bad!

SophieB100 · 18/04/2021 16:50

Despite feeling rubbish after first vaccine, I will be having my second, however:

I've booked it for half term (so I can rest in case I feel rubbish again).
Yes, I've had flu jab (paid for after having confirmed swine flu five years ago) with no side effects whatsoever, for the last four years.
I'm a teacher - am fairly certain (before tests unless admitted to hospital) that I had Covid over a year ago, my GP confirmed that side effects from AZ can cause more of a reaction to those that had previously contracted Covid.

SophieB100 · 18/04/2021 16:51

Should have added: If I did have Covid a year ago, then the side effects of the vaccine were worse.

SophieB100 · 18/04/2021 16:54

Thank you @EveryDayIsADuvetDay
I will take Nytol after I have my second one!

Keepyourdistance000 · 18/04/2021 16:59

I had my first jab (AZ) at 12pm on Tuesday 6th April. At around 3pm I started feeling very tired and cold. By around 9pm I was feeling feverish and went to bed. Burning up most of the night, didn't sleep well and was very tired the next day, when I also had diarrhoea in the evening, but this may not have been related to the jab.

Felt completely fine and back to normal on Thursday.

I had a slightly sore arm until the Sunday and still very slightly sore now but fading.

So around 24-48 hours of feeling rubbish, but no regrets whatsoever.

I had shingles 2 and a half weeks later, anyone else?

I agree with PP that people with side effects will be more likely to respond so this thread shouldn't be taken as an accurate indicator of how likely people are to suffer.

I want to reassure people that I had no side effects. At worst I was maybe sleepy but I often am so couldn't say it was linked at all. I didn't even have a sore arm. Never have side effects from the flu jab either.

The data on side effects is easily available, no one should take random postings as indicative of the statistical likelihood of experiencing them, that makes no logical sense

I know all the vaccine centres are different but is it common that they aren't giving out the vaccine leaflet? I'm sure the one I went to can't be the only doing that.
