Selfish people on bus

70smusic · 12/04/2021 18:54

I don’t own a car and today needed to take the bus for an essential journey. I was really shocked to see that of the 8 or so people on the bus, 5 weren’t wearing masks properly. 3 people had them covering the mouth only with their noses exposed, 1 person pulled theirs down to chat on the phone and another had theirs around their neck. I’m assuming all these people are able to wear masks and weren’t exempt as they did have them on - they just weren’t wearing them properly.

I just don’t understand what goes through these people’s minds - do they not care about putting others at risk? It just seems so selfish and ignorant. I got off the bus feeling really panicky that they could have put me (and therefore my family) at risk. I’m not worried about myself but do worry about giving the virus to others (including my DC). I despair Sad

Bastards. I bet they don't even put cheese in their coffee and have literal blood on their hands. #STFAH

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/04/2021 18:57

Can't wait to see the end of masks. They're pointless.

Finfintytint · 12/04/2021 18:57

No, they don’t care. Same in the supermarket.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/04/2021 18:58

I don't want to stay at home Grin.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 12/04/2021 18:58

@LucilleTheVampireBat 😂

I don't know how some people are going to cope again in the real world.

Quite.

I was on a train a couple of weeks ago. The masks all came up. One person was even vaping.

I gave zero grams of fuck and ate my pasta salad.

70smusic · 12/04/2021 19:13

I don't know how some people are going to cope again in the real world.

I take public transport regularly in the “real world” so will be fine. I just don’t understand the mentality of people who deliberately put others at risk and don’t seem to care.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 12/04/2021 19:15

@70smusic it doesn't sound like you're dealing with it fine if you have to come and post on Mumsnet about someone wearing their mask under their nose.

How will you cope when masks are scrapped?

70smusic · 12/04/2021 19:20

How will you cope when masks are scrapped?

I’ll be fine. My reasoning is that by the time the experts say that masks can be scrapped on public transport, presumably many millions more people will have had the vaccine and so there will be far greater protection. At the moment it’s still deemed unsafe not to wear a mask on public transport, which is why anyone who can is meant to be wearing one, to protect others.

A few weeks/months ago you would have had great support.
People are fed up of this now.

And you ABU to be ‘panicky’ about it.......imo

If you have to get the bus and this panicked you, get a bike. You’re away from people, save money and increase your fitness (and so your risk from Covid).

So are people no longer bothered about taking steps to protect others around us who might be vulnerable?

It’s not like you’re being asked to donate a limb. Plus, if you genuinely can’t wear a mask then you don’t have to.

Should the vulnerable just stay home forever? Or is it unrealistic to expect people to take small steps to protect each other?

This is a serious question. Do people feel like they shouldn’t have to wear a mask to protect others?

Which is a perfectly sensible, rational approach.

I don’t know what’s happened on MN recently, but we seem to have been invaded by a right bunch of arseholes.

70smusic · 12/04/2021 19:33

I don’t want to get a bike - it wouldn’t suit my needs for various reasons. What I do want is for people not to be so selfish and deliberately put me and others (and by extension our families and other people we come into contact with) at risk on public transport.

I agree with Hairy. It's unfortunate but you can't change others. But you can change your own action. If you feel panicky, get off the bus and walk if you can, or try to cycle next time.

BonnieDundee · 12/04/2021 19:36

Exactly. I went to my corner shop tonight and.was absolutely delighted to see one of the staff wearing his mask under his chin. That along with the heaving high street today means the public have decided lockdown is over 🥳

Footloosefancyfree · 12/04/2021 19:36

Are you at severe risk?

SeaTurtles92 · 12/04/2021 19:36

It is selfish OP.
The rules are there for a reason.
They aren't ready to be 'scrapped'.

People who say masks are pointless please do tell me when you work in a medical/science background. We wore the pre covid at work for a reason.

BonnieDundee · 12/04/2021 19:38

Surely it’s common knowledge that buses and their patrons tend to be trashy - there’s a certain subsection of society that are obnoxious and rowdy and tend to use buses.

I can't believe anyone would actually write that Grin

MaxNormal · 12/04/2021 19:40

Honestly I'm at the point where I feel like I've done enough now, yes. It's about time for those who are vulnerable to mitigate their own risks.

mooonstone · 12/04/2021 19:41

Should the vulnerable just stay home forever? Or is it unrealistic to expect people to take small steps to protect each other?

This is going to be controversial, but the low risk groups have pandered to the vulnerable for over a year now, and have made major sacrifices along the way. You can’t be surprised when over a year later patience is beginning to wear thin. Everyone has their limits. With mass vaccines of the vulnerable, society is beginning to become less stringent.

BonnieDundee · 12/04/2021 19:43

@seaturtles92 I work in a medical environment. Not medical myself but all the doctors I work with say they're useless (the blue disposable ones). I believe them over the lying Whitty, Vallance and Johnson any day.

Rosehip10 · 12/04/2021 19:43

@70smusic why do you need to tell us your journey was "essential" - there is no "stay at home, essential travel only" now (since 29 march....)

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/04/2021 19:43

Well, we all want things that won't happen. People are fed up with it now. That's reality.
