Blood type and side effects of vaccine?

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2021 07:29

Just a quick straw poll as we've been having this discussion at home and wondered if there might be something in it.

What blood type are you?
Did you get a lot of side effects from the vaccine?
Which vaccine did you have?

OP posts:

O positive

have had both doses of Pfizer

no side effects with either jab whatsoever felt fine the next day and up to a run and body pump, dog walk etc.

GloveFromAbove · 03/04/2021 10:26

O +, had AZ.

Fluey symptoms come and go for a couple of days, first night felt terrible, chills, sweats, nausea. Extremely sore arm (couldn’t lift it above elbow height) for days.

ifonly4 · 03/04/2021 10:44

AB- make up for 1% of the population - it's interesting that five people have replied here.

I think there was some talk that certain blood groups might be more affected by Covid, so maybe it's people who are in those blood groups that are more interested in the thread.

JustMeAndWheatley · 03/04/2021 12:20

A+

Extreme fatigue for 24 hours after dose 1
Very unwell for 36 hours after dose 2 - shivering, fever, headache, nausea, metallic taste in mouth, fatigue

Janssen (trial vaccine) - operates similarly to AZ

yeOldeTrout · 03/04/2021 14:33

My theory is that there is no link. Here are some summary stats so far.

127 specific responses so far, excluding 2 people who only had the jab very recently (< 2 days) & the person who tested positive 3d after jab.

39% type O, 28% type A, 15% type B, 17% type AB

The ABs are way over-represented compared to general population, A & Os are too few. Is there a reason why As & Os aren't on MN or not interested in reporting symptoms/lack thereof? My hunch is people are mistaken about their blood type. IIRC there are always too many ABs reported on MN threads.

There is one blood type that seems to be getting worse symptoms than the others (to my shock). Not hugely worse, but it would pass a Fischer exact test I'll wager if we combine vacc types. Consistent whether Pfizer or AZ (I'm not worrying about rh-factor, btw). Probably sample size is too small (& sampling strategy too biased) to make this observation significant. I don't want to say anything yet, curious what theory OP wants to put forward.

Missing info
@DGRossetti , which jab she & DP had
@ifonly4, @Mollymalone123 which jab their DHs had
@bruffin which jab her sis had
@Harpydragon, @HopingForOurRainbowBaby, @RingtheBells, VienneseWhirligig : which jab any of them had
@garden4569 : blood type

Blood type and side effects of vaccine?
yeOldeTrout · 03/04/2021 14:38

ps: forgot to say, that's 1st jabs only, since very few have had 2 jabs. I ignored sex & age (mostly missing). Hopefully equally distributed over blood groups, too.

LostToucan · 03/04/2021 14:50

I think I said earlier I was O- but I think it’s more likely I’m O+ (definitely O though - was on my maternity notes but that’s a long time ago now).

On a different thread someone had posted some research on blood groups and severity of Covid symptoms. Those with group O or who were Rhesus negative were less likely to have Covid infections or severe symptoms.

B+ Pfizer tender arm

Postdatedpandemic · 03/04/2021 14:51

B+ AZ few for 12 hours, then felt like I had been hide by the proverbial bus for 18 hours, followed by quick recovery.

bruffin · 03/04/2021 14:56

My sister had Az

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 03/04/2021 15:20

A+ , flu like side effects for about 3 days alongside nausea and dodgy belly

oneglassandpuzzled · 03/04/2021 15:26

O+ and 57. Mildly nauseous and a little flu-y for a day. Wore off quickly.

BentBastard · 03/04/2021 15:57

I expect most that know their blood type are blood donors (that's why I know mine) and is the main way people would find out IME.

You're more likely to be a blood donor if you're generally healthy, I expect.

Just a couple thoughts.

catsandchaos · 03/04/2021 16:20

Type A+ very sore arm, chills, felt so tired and horrible sweats

DGRossetti · 03/04/2021 16:34

Sorry - was AZ for both me (blokey type, btw Grin) and DW.

Mollymalone123 · 03/04/2021 16:49

DH had AZ as well

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/04/2021 16:55

O positive-I also know because am a frequent blood donor

Had Pfizer

Had a sore arm.

DH doesn't know his blood type

He had AZ-absolutley fine- although did have a nap

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/04/2021 16:56

@RedToothBrush

This is interesting so far. Obviously very very unscientific. Its a little difficult to group but I've put into three categories. Yes I am doing a spreadsheet.
Will you post it here? fascinating...

I know mine as on pregnancy notes
Dontstepinthecowpat · 03/04/2021 17:05

B+ female, age 36. Had Pfizer, both doses 8 weeks apart. Sore arm

JustMeAndWheatley · 03/04/2021 17:21

Blood type known from maternity notes

Saff2015 · 03/04/2021 17:23

A negative. Slight sore arm after both but no other side effects.

Monkeytennis97 · 03/04/2021 17:32

@Panpig

B negative, and I had the AZ one. Had a slightly achy arm and maybe a tiny bit tired for a couple of days! Was pleasantly suprised
Exactly the same. B- too
clopper · 03/04/2021 17:40

yeoldetrout The ABs are way over-represented compared to general population,

I'm one of the ones with AB- who reported on here. My main reason is that I had read early on in the pandemic some news articles suggesting that A and B groups seem to be worse affected, but AB together wasnt really touched upon. Therefore I am interested to see the experiences of others. I am certain about my blood group through several operations and also tested during pregnancy as rhesus negative.

sanityisamyth · 03/04/2021 17:54

AB+ Oxford jab on Monday. Slightly sore arm but otherwise fine.
