Vaccines will definitely reduce hospital admissions and deaths. But when do you think we will reach a point where we never go back to a lockdown?

@megletthesecond

Probably over winter if new variants are causing problems. It's a pain in the arse.

But if it means the NHS can continue to treat other illnesses then it needs to be done.

I dont know what you mean by continue to treat other illnesses when thousands of operations have been postponed indefinitely..have you read the thread on trying to get a GP appointment face to face?
LemonSherbetFancies · 01/04/2021 11:43

I would happily put money on there being no more lockdowns ever again. It's almost gone in the UK now. There may be restrictions in the Winter but schools, shops etc will open and stay open. I am pretty confident of that.

I dont agree, the immunity from vaccines is months not years, throw in new variants - we will be locked down again later this year IMO. I'm against lockdowns but the preserve all life at all costs brigade will clamour for them
Heathermary1995 · 01/04/2021 11:48

As for covid being almost gone from the Uk, covid will be around for the rest of our lives which even the government/scientists have admitted

LemonSherbetFancies · 01/04/2021 12:37

We will have to agree to disagree

What has almost gone in the UK? Covid???!

Some people will believe anything.

LemonSherbetFancies · 01/04/2021 18:02

Hmm Go and look at all the positive reports about the vaccine and how hospitals deaths and infection rates are down. We are practically over this now.

PrincessNutNuts · 01/04/2021 19:26

I see we've reached the couple of months where people declare covid to be "over" on here, early this year.

You're living in cloud cuckoo land I'm afraid and in for a massive shock if you honestly believe this

Respectfully, I disagree. There are plenty of areas in the UK where infection rates remain relatively high, and even increasing.

I'd not be surprised if some areas don't have the proposed relaxations granted, i.e. staying in "lockdown" when other areas are relaxed.

I remember deluded people saying the same last Summer. Especially a few Londoners saying the virtual zero rates in London last Summer were down to herd immunity! How crazy does that sound now. (It also sounded crazy last Summer when people were saying it!).

I'd take that bet.

I hope for it to be over this time next year, but we're in lockdown. And most of us have been in a high tier or Lockdown for several months. That's the main reason why the numbers are currently low.

That will change as lockdown ends. I hope the school holidays will act as the same dampener they did last year, but I think the chances of the government declaring another lockdown remain high.

Heathermary1995 · 01/04/2021 19:31

Even the creator of the pfizer vaccine says the virus will be around for at least a decade with life as we know it before gone forever- still I admire peoples optimism that " it is nearly over" Hmm

Could you link to where the creator of the Pfizer vaccine talked about "life as we know it before gone forever"?

And of course Covid is going to be around for a decade, and much longer, like all sorts of other illnesses. But with successful vaccines and treatments there's really no reason it should have a major impact on life for very much longer. It's not the first pandemic humanity has dealt with, though to read some posters here, you'd think otherwise.

Heathermary1995 · 01/04/2021 19:41

@IcedPurple with this ridiculous vaccine passport being introduced and essentially making a vaccine mandatory to participate in society, how can life ever return to what it was? People are slowly surrendering their free will and autonomy to the state which is a game changer for everything. The vaccine has limited immunity, no guarantees against other strains and needs " boosters" every few months

You haven't answered my question about " the creator of the Pfizer vaccine" and his comments. The rest of your post is just conjecture. We've dealt with far more virulent illnesses than Covid in the past and returned to normal, so I'm not sure why you think this pandemic is so exceptional.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/04/2021 19:44

I still don't understand why people are comparing to last year when we have a working vaccine now. It's a completely different situation.

COVID-19 could still be causing outbreaks in 10 years time, the creator of the world’s first approved vaccine has said.

Ugur Sahin, chief executive of Germany's BioNTech, partnered with US drug company Pfizer and took less than a year to get a vaccine approved.

No, you still haven't provided a link to the creator of the Pfizer vaccine saying what you claimed he said. In fact you haven't provided a link at all, just a confusing set of cut and pastes.

From this afternoon’s Telegraph: “Lockdowns are unlikely to be needed again as Britain learns to treat coronavirus like flu, Prof Chris Whitty has said.

The chief medical officer said that up to 25,000 people die in a bad flu year without anyone noticing and that accepting some Covid deaths would be the price of keeping schools and business open and allowing people to live a "whole life".”

Yes I’ve read this from Whitty before.

No one thinks it’ll be eradicated but we can live a normal life

Heathermary1995 · 01/04/2021 20:07

@IcedPurple only confusing if you can't read.. you believe there will be no more lockdowns, I will go on the basis of the last year, the hysteria around covid and what people are saying

KikoMiko · 01/04/2021 20:16

I'm not a betting person but I'd be happy to place some money on this being the last ever lockdown. We have vaccines now which are proven to cut transmission, they prevent serious illness and hospitalisation and within a few months we'll have the vast majority of people partially, if not fully vaccinated. We have to learn to live with this. Yes, people will die and that's sad for their families and loved ones, but we tolerate 25k deaths per year from flu so we have to apply a similar level of tolerance to covid. My only caveat to all this would be that non-essential travel shouldn't be allowed until other countries have got their own outbreaks under control.
