Hi all, I read these threads but don't usually contribute. I wondered what were your thoughts on the AZ blood clot issue. Evidence reported in the press sounds quite conflicting / inconclusive and the party line seems to be that there's no proven link. But this doesn't align with what I have heard from the front line (specifically a consultant haematologist friend who is treating patients with this side effect).

I am neither anti-vax nor a scare mongerer and I believe that any risk would still be better at a population level than the alternative of not using the vaccine but I wonder if there should or will be a limit to the age groups it is used in?

MRex · 06/04/2021 15:34

@TheChineseChicken - Unfortunately when events occur that are very rare it's hard to identify a pattern, and mistakes can be made in finding patterns before there are enough cases and enough information to know for sure what's going on. Peter English explains "reporting bias" well here, or why more cases were found when this was publicised: www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-latest-weekly-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting-following-covid-19-vaccination-published-by-the-mhra-including-updated-numbers-of-cvst-and-other-thrombosis-events-with-low-platelets/. There have also been reports of this with covid itself, lots of useful links to that here, read Prof Stephen Evans comments: www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-some-european-countries-pausing-the-oxford-astrazeneca-vaccine/?cli_action=1617719190.77. Statistically it is incredibly rare, but there have been reports of low platelets and reports of CVST from the USA for Pfizer and Moderna (incredibly rare again and probably even fewer proportionally), and one from the Janssen trial.

I think it's plausible that it's a very rare immune response to covid antibodies (so caused by any vaccine or vivid), or it's people who've had covid either before or at the time of vaccination. It's good that it's getting attention with treatment protocols as well at looking for who might be affected, but it's rare enough not to matter on an individual level and it's concerning that it might unnecessarily put some off vaccination.

  • Regardling individual level, I've been vaccinated with AZ during the period it's being reviewed by some EU countries and am in the middle of the 30-55 age group. Personally I've not been concerned because it's very low risk compared with covid risk; I live in London and travel, so I see it as a certainty that I'll be in contact with covid at some point in the future.

Given there's only been 30 in the UK, how many has he actually treated, given that you talk about patients?

More than 10 and they were surprised with the number that have been officially reported. I know I sound like one of those spouting rumours from my best friend's cousin's dog but I promise I'm not. In fact I hesitated to include that in my post as it sounds like scaremongering.

Thanks @MRex for your reply. Sometimes it is hard to balance scientific, rational thinking with emotional reactions to things.
