I think the point about Watford is it may not be deprived but it does have pockets of considerable deprivation. There are worries about vaccine uptake in Bedford too. The difference, though, is Bedford has a very community active MP who is form an ethnic minority and is visibly trying very hard to change mindsets.

Piggywaspushed · 04/04/2021 06:53

I don't think there are all that many Irish in Corby, aka Wee Scotland Jan... it's basically a protestant Glaswegian microcosm. Waving an Ireland flag or supporting Celtic does not always go down all that well.. (Wikipedia claims it has Celtic fans but it does have the largest Rangers supporters club outside Glasgow , and there was that huge gathering of Rangers fans in Corby not that long ago)

MRex · 04/04/2021 07:37

I think someone should interview a range of GP practices who are contacting people. My worry is that perhaps surprising numbers of people who aren't registered when they're not born in the UK, and whose contact details have changed but not been updated at the GP so contacts go unanswered. Combine that with vaccine hesitancy and there will be a core of people, particularly in deprived city areas, who aren't easily reachable. Whether there is to be effort finding them now or a mop-up later I'm not sure.

Also some GPs insist on only calling people. I know a well-meaning receptionist who grumbles about people not answering the phone, I've tried explaining multiple times that some people simply cannot and they should have other options for those people. I've given reasons; running an online work conference, on the shop floor, working with young children, putting a baby down to nap... then a week later I hear her say the same again. Meanwhile polite people wait their turn instead of booking online, because they think they should.

Piggywaspushed · 04/04/2021 07:49

Yes, that's what I mean about the MP who went the extra mile. He and a team went round from door to door talking to people, physically took appointment invitation letters to homes, posts regularly on Facebook with stats and awareness stuff in a range of languages. Vaccine take up is still a bit low but not as low as Peterborough, Luton, MK, Cambridge so I'd like to think he made a dent.

The Sunday Times has an article about a number of areas having no cases in the over 70s in recent days - which is excellent news.

Can anyone signpost me to where I could find the data broken down into agebands for my local area? I’ve just looked on the ONS site and there are a lot of options!

MRex · 04/04/2021 09:33

If you look at the cases dashboard you can change the filter, e.g. Here is Eastbourne, where the elderly apparently don't have covid any more as it's yellow down to age 60 Smile: coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/cases?areaType=ltla&areaName=Eastbourne

PurpleWh1teGreen · 04/04/2021 09:57

Thank you Mrex. Looks like I need to turn the PC on! Really can't do this on my phone. Oh to be a teenager.

The figures for our local area have been generally good for a few weeks now so I'm hoping that is reflected in the data for older people.

MRex · 04/04/2021 10:11

My area was too, but someone in their 90s looks to have caught covid this week. Hopefully vaccinated and low symptoms.

ceeveebee · 04/04/2021 10:17

There’s also a graph and table of the rate for each area showing below 60 and above 60 which might be easier to read on a phone!
Link for Eastbourne for consistency

Torture statistics enough and they will tell you all you want to know. Never read them, never believe them, don't trust the sources. How do you know you are being told the truth? Load of rubbish mostly.

To add to this a lot of GP’s/NHS departments call from withheld numbers and a lot of people don’t answer withheld numbers. Some of these scam calls/marketing calls will leave an automated voicemail too so people don’t necessarily check their voicemail either if they get a lot of them.

I wish my GP would set up to display a number easily associated with their surgery.

Well, 76% of statistics are made up. Only 2 out of 10 people know that.

Worryingly, posters on this thread have seemed better at spotting trends and concerns in advance of those who are actually paid to do it...

It does seem so at times. We certainly spotted that there was something odd going on in North Kent before anything was identified about the new variant. I like to imagine that top bods at government are reading this thread, investigating our hypothesises and taking up all our great ideas Grin. Optimistically, I hope that they are in fact identifying issues just as quickly as us (or quicker) but unlike us they need to think about messaging and whether they public reaction will be beneficial or not before saying anything (eg closing borders with France - which I think they'll do soon - might have negative consequences for already-sensitive relations with France, so they prefer to wait until the last minute to announce a change). Or pessimistically, I worry that experts are completely siloed and each study their own little bit with noone looking at the big picture well enough.
MRex · 04/04/2021 11:55

I have to say, I'm gobsmacked that France appear to have chosen to take yesterday off from reporting case numbers with the current state of affairs there. If there's genuinely a data problem then surely there's been time by now to pick up the phone.

I'd be most interested to know what's actually been checked with these CVST cases. Age/ sex distribution, how many very ill or just mild, how many had covid before and when, number of antibodies N and S, who took how much aspirin / ibuprofen / paracetamol, how often they usually take NSAIDs, percentage with heparin issues, etc...

MRex · 04/04/2021 12:04

I'm in two minds about a proper French border closure because we need the hauliers' goodwill as much as their goods, testing should show if they actually pose much of a problem and I suspect they don't. Would it be feasible to operate a border only open to hauliers as a special rule that applies only to France? Even if they do close the border, I hope there will be fair treatment with hauliers being given a chance to make their way back either way over a few days. We'd have to just eat more apples and frozen peas instead of the nice grapes and lettuce.

Do you make that up 🧐
PurpleWh1teGreen · 04/04/2021 13:15

Thanks for the links. It looks like the over 80s in our area have been doing well for weeks now with more - lumpy I think is the term of the moment - data in the over 70s. Tiny numbers overall though which is such good news.

Firefliess · 04/04/2021 13:23

I'm sure they'd think through the issue of hauliers as a distinct group if imposing any kind of border control with France. One good thing about the Brexit debate has meant we are aware how dependent on food by freight from Dover. But when the French side started requiring tests at short notice last autumn (in a vain effort to keep the Kent strain out) it caused a couple of days of chaos and tailbacks, but after that the lorry drivers seemed to get used to it and I presume it's been working ok, as I've heard nothing more. So don't see why it couldn't work for us to require tests for lorry drivers coming into the uk. Maybe once we've finished vaccinating our own population we could vaccinate French and Irish lorry drivers!

MRex · 04/04/2021 13:25

It's a nice idea to offer vaccines to the lorry drivers, but they'd need somewhere to stay in case of side effects, some drive for several days at a time. They'd also need an employer guarantee to send them back at a reasonable point for their second dose.

MRex · 04/04/2021 13:26

Once UK are vaccinated we should be offering to vaccinate anyone else wanting it in RoI anyway.

Firefliess · 04/04/2021 13:28

Yes you're right. Might not be terribly practical to jab them while they're here.
alreadytaken · 04/04/2021 14:32

J&J is a single dose vaccine. Offer it to lorry drivers and see who takes it up - some may be happy to take a day off/ their employers may agree. But how common are side effects from j&j anyway?

boys3 · 04/04/2021 14:33

just to follow up on deprivation

First chart plots all Council's take up rates against their IMD 2019 deprivation score, a pattern is there but needs breaking down further.

The second chart therefore shows both the 20% most deprived councils and the 20% least deprived. Over 85% of the former have a take up rate below the median level in England; whilst for the 20% least deprived its just under 25%. Although 1 in 4 of the 20% least deprived is still a perhaps surprising level. The two least deprived outliers are Kingston and Richmond LBCs

The final chart then shows side by side the second most deprived quintile and the second least deprived quintile. For the second least deprived the percentage below the England median is 26%, so not really much higher than that for the least deprived 20%. For the second most deprived quintile 62% below the median.

The red dashed line of each chart indicates the median for overall 50+ age bands.

As we are a data thread:

quickly in terms of Watford: no LSOAs in the most deprived deprivation decile, and 1 of its 53 in the second most deprived decile.

Gig Economy - detailed study a couple of years back found that two thirds of gig economy worked were aged below 35. I'm not convinced that the gig economy is a significant factor in take up rate for those aged from 50 upwards.

high white immigrant population - likely to be disproportionately younger so how much impact on the take up rate in the age 50+ age bands? A bit more data on this would be welcome in order to draw a firm conclusion either way.
