Looks like Europe may have got their way

@LoudestCat14

It's not panic, it's people reacting to yet another setback after a year of bloody setbacks. For example, my partner is a teacher and has 30 kids in his class. He's been vaccinated due to an underlying condition but I'm still vulnerable. I'm not panicking, just pissed off.
But we are ahead, so technically it's not a setback.
IloveJKRowling · 17/03/2021 17:46

The millions vaccinated are largely not the ones that my kids are mixing with or I'm forced to mix with via them going to school.

There is a higher risk now because there is a more transmissible and deadlier variant now. Schools being opened as they were before allowed that variant to take off. I was also pretty hacked off before that schools were so unsafe, but now that vaccination is in reach it's even more blatantly irresponsible.

And there is no-one to look after my kids except DH and I so they'd have been fucked before and they'll be fucked now.

OliveTree75 · 17/03/2021 17:46

@IloveJKRowling

I’m angry and frightened. Schools are not COVID-safe and I was looking forward to being vaccinated and feeling a little less anxious about being at work.

So we're going to have a 4th wave of unvaccinated teachers and parents of school aged kids mainly in the 40-50 bracket.

Lovely.

Who's going to look after our kids when DH and I get it?

My DP and I had covid last week and we looked after them ourselves.
duffeldaisy · 17/03/2021 17:47

"I'm totally gutted by this. I was hanging on thinking school cases should be low-ish until Easter. Then I'd get my jab around Easter (46).
I can't go until the summer term with the risk dangling over me. "

You're not alone. I'm feeling the same. Flowers not that that's much comfort probably.
I don't think I can carry on with this worry all the time. It's exhausting.
I just hope it doesn't end up being as long as they're saying.

JS87 · 17/03/2021 17:48

@Bluntness100

People hAve to remember we are not in lock down to eliminate Covid. It’s to release the pressure on the nhs. People under fifty with no underlying health conditions are hugely unlikely to get seriously ill.

So with your over fifties and cev vaccinated you release the pressure on the nhs and hugely reduce the death rates, which allows society to open up.

In addition. It’s a four week delay on the over fifties only. People need to calm down and not panic.

Quite a high percentage may suffer from after effects of covid for some time though. Getting vaccinated would likely avoid that. I think there are a high number of people under 50 who were really hoping they might get at least one shot 2-3 weeks before May 17 when cases will start to rise again with indoor mixing allowed.
roundturnandtwohalfhitches · 17/03/2021 17:48

I fully suspect someone didn't do their sums right and they carried on vaccinating without factoring in second doses so we could be world beating. Sums don't seem to be their forte.

middleager · 17/03/2021 17:48

I'm also gutted. 48, DH 47.

Two kids at two different secondaries in high risk areas where vaccine take up has been poor.
One child already brought Covid home in November.
We are both due back in our offices soon.

User133847 · 17/03/2021 17:48
According to most reports this isn't related to the EU. It's maybe more to do with the demands of giving second doses as well as first ones, together with supply issues. It's a big ask to double rates. Moderna was meant to be coming 'in the Spring', so hopefully supply will improve.

www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-government-secures-additional-2-million-doses-of-moderna-covid-19-vaccine
It was always liable to happen once we got to the end of March as those vaccinated in January will have to have their second dose in April. We've been concentrating on first doses until now.

We've had some issues with stocks at times so we've had some weeks slower than others. Now we need to make sure there's always enough for the people who need the second dose.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/03/2021 17:48

@IloveJKRowling

Most people that age don't suffer that badly so the odds are you'll still be able to look after them.

Well I know 3 people of that age with long covid who are still really struggling. Do you know what it's like for kids to have to become carers?

I wouldn't mind so much if schools were safer and they were doing everything they could to reduce transmission, but they're not.

And to counteract that, I know more than 30 people who have had Covid and none of them have long Covid. Many are my colleagues, I work in a factory.
IdblowJonSnow · 17/03/2021 17:48

What about people who will be due their 2nd jabs in april but haven't yet got appointments?

LoudestCat14 · 17/03/2021 17:48

sipsmith1 People aren't being dramatic, they're upset. It's been a really crappy year of deaths and illness and financial hardship and our kids off school but things were finally turning a corner, so this is a disappointment and people are allowed to be disappointed.

3asAbird · 17/03/2021 17:48

@sipsmith1

Everyone is being quite dramatic. He’s said in the press conference that they are still on track for everyone else to have theirs by the end of July.

Originally they wanted to vaccinate groups 1-9 by mid May. They are on track to do it a month early. Everyone else will be getting their vaccines as per the original timetable.

Because they have changed the timeliness 2 weeks ago it was 40 to 50 April rest by July. Theres been plenty of 40s in icu and hospital. We just have hope schools don't get out of control as poor teacher in 40s has no protection.

They should be honest
Which vaccine we short if and why.
Somethings changed.

Bagamoyo1 · 17/03/2021 17:50

@megletsecond

I'm totally gutted by this. I was hanging on thinking school cases should be low-ish until Easter. Then I'd get my jab around Easter (46). I can't go until the summer term with the risk dangling over me. DD is hard to control when she had a meltdown so I can't get ill.
Cases are dropping. What makes you think they're going to go up again?
Bluntness100 · 17/03/2021 17:51

I think there are a high number of people under 50 who were really hoping they might get at least one shot 2-3 weeks before May 17 when cases will start to rise again with indoor mixing allowed

Firstly just because it’s allowed doesn’t mean you need to do it. Secondly if the case continue to crop like they are, with hospital admissions and deaths dropping, and half the population vaccinated then the risk is low. But if people still feel unsafe, they can still take the same precautions. Lock down doesn’t need to end for them. We all have choice.

cathyandclare · 17/03/2021 17:51

Matt Hancock said they were still on track to do all 50+ by April 15th and all adults by July 31st.

Sure but panicking and catastrophising doesn’t help anyone.

Gosh,,don’t add some common sense into thr mix,,😃
MarshaBradyo · 17/03/2021 17:52

I did revise timing to get it earlier than those targets. I know you’re not meant to or whatever but at some point it felt like before Easter was likely (age 46, dh a couple of years older just booked).

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/03/2021 17:53

Does anyone know why?

Because the EU are being utter twats about it.

They are sitting on vaccines they aren't using, they are rubbishing the AZ but they don't want anyone else to use it either, they fucked up their orders but now someone else had to mop up their mess.

Madness.

GoldenOmber · 17/03/2021 17:53

It’s clear reading the letter that this is quite a significant drop in anticipated supplies, leading to vaccine sites being told not to book under-50s in for all of April and close all unbooked appointments.

That is significant. It is. Telling people they’re panicking and loving the drama and spreading misinformation for saying so, why don’t we all listen to that nice Mr Hancock who says it’s not a big thing, doesn’t change that! I mean yes clearly he’s playing it down in the press conference, but also that letter’s in the media now and come on, people can read.

(I’m guessing they’re still sorting out exactly what this means for the vaccine supply and he’s more optimistic that it might get better than the letter sets out. Which would be good. But who knows at this point, really.)

GreenTeaPingPong · 17/03/2021 17:53

Just to add, supply of vaccines has not been totally smooth so far. I volunteer in a vaccination centre and we have had two very quiet weeks due to low amounts of vaccine supply, and then it ramped up hugely as of Monday just gone - going from as low as 350 per day to 2,500 per day this week and next. If supplies drop again from the 29th it's not a huge surprise. And of course they have to prioritise second doses and the CEV.

I understand it's disappointing if you're in the 40-49 bracket but we're still broadly on schedule.

Piggywaspushed · 17/03/2021 17:53

I got a text from GP several hours ago telling me to book before 28th as vaccines bookings will close. It seemed weird. Now makes sense. My area is on people in early 50s and some late 40s.

itsgettingwierd · 17/03/2021 17:53

Matt Hancock stated the original plan hasn't changed.

Just that those who weren't in first 9 groups will no longer get their vaccine earlier than April 15th - which according to the roll out they never were?

Delatron · 17/03/2021 17:54

I don’t think it’s a massive setback. We are seeing on here lots of people aged 40 in some areas are being offered slots when in other areas older age groups are still waiting. If supply is an issue that unfortunately needs to stop. We know age is the biggest risk factor.

We also need to ensure the second doses have enough supply.

Our local vaccination centre just got a big delivery and they are open every day next week which has never happened. They do need to focus on making sure all over 50s in all areas are done.

It’s less important for healthy 40 and 30 year olds even if personally you feel it is.

OverTheRainbow88 · 17/03/2021 17:54

@Bagamoyo1

Cases are dropping. What makes you think they're going to go up again?

They are dropping because we are in lockdown, nothing is open... it’s all opening up again!
