Looks like Europe may have got their way

@AlecTrevelyan006

The signing of EU contract the day before U.K. is a complete red herring. The timing is less important than the details
...And at the risk of being controversial the contract details are less important than saving the maximum number lives possible .....
EasterIssland · 28/03/2021 13:05

No sorry @TheMancunianCandidate
5.1 from the Eu contract says 300m to the Eu from Eu plants
5.4 from Eu contract says once those 300m have been given then they can have an extra 100m from Eu plants as well as uk plants.

You are wrong. There has been a whole raft of published legal commentary on the contract particularly articles 5 and 13 (conflicting obligations clause). There is a range of views and it is eminently arguable that AZ are in breach. No lawyer worth their salt would advise that the position is clear - particularly no English lawyer, as the contract is heavily redacted and governed by Belgian law.

Are you a Belgian lawyer?

EasterIssland · 28/03/2021 14:02

Im far from being a Belgian lawyer. I take you’re.

Wakeupin2022 · 28/03/2021 15:18

I have seen many arguments for the contract and most agree that there is no breach.

But I agree that others say there is.

The UK order was already in the books when the EU order was placed.

So any available capacity and any extra capacity that AZ would need to fill the order should be available to the EU. So there was nothing stopping them from managing both contracts.

It just seems that the EU parts of the EU supply chain haven't worked quite as well.

But the UK plants were already fully booked our for UK supply. As soon as there is availability in the Production schedule then I am sure the EU order will fill that space.

That will probably happen before the EU initial doses are fulfilled (300 million I think) so it's reasonable for AZ / EU to authorise the UK plants to supply the EU - saves the hassle later.

Despite what VDL says I very much doubt there was ever any claim from AZ that they would supply the UK manufactured vaccines to the EU initially.

I also have to question why she wants to take the UK supplies and leave us with none.

All posturing I am sure but extreme miscalculation on her part. And instead of trying to calm the situation she and others in EU / EU member states have compounded the situation and as a result seriously damaged the reputation of the EU internationally whilst not actually achieving any more vaccines.

@EasterIssland

People under 50 in the UK will begin to be offered Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine within three weeks, according to a report in the Mail on Sunday.

More than 500,000 new doses of the US vaccine will be used to expanded the programme to people in lower age cohorts in mid-April, the paper says.

Doctors are expected to administer the first doses of the new vaccine, which will join Pfizer and AstraZeneca in the UK’s vaccine stocks, within three weeks.

Just seen this.

Just read guardian. Someone voff vaccination committee says only small amount moderna won't make massive impact difference. Also have veiled threats of blocking vaccines from EU.

Fountainsoftea · 28/03/2021 20:36

I think by uk, they mean England. People in their 60s haven't had them in parts of Wales yet.

wonderstuff · 29/03/2021 10:34

Has Wales got a much older population then, because I'm sure they were ahead of England in terms of % vaccinated.

Fountainsoftea · 29/03/2021 10:35

Think they ran out. Think there is an older population too. People tend to retire to places like Llandudno. Young people tend to move to where the jobs are.

Dongdingdong · 29/03/2021 11:09

no idea how you extrapolate that by my showing concern about low paid NHS workers I don’t give a shit about unemployed people in other sectors?

@VaVaGloom do I really have to spell it out? Moaning about pay rises or lack thereof is highly insensitive when there are hundreds of thousands of people who have lost their jobs thanks to this pandemic. I don’t see why that’s so hard for you to understand.

VaVaGloom · 29/03/2021 11:32

@Dongdingdong You are wrong. Concern about low paid NHS workers is not insensitive - we need to retain people in those jobs now more than ever.

It would be insensitive to talk about BIG payrises to people already in well paid positions, like MPs, which is why they changed tack on their 4.1% pay award worth 3k (and as their wages have increased by 16k over the last 10 years it really would be sour grapes there).

You better give that memo to Boris who has been bemoaning his pay as PM. Let's not forget Johnson is the sensitive person who referred to his £250,000 pay cheque as a columnist as 'chickenfeed':
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-dismisses-pound-250-000-a-year-telegraph-column-as-chickenfeed-1745610.html

Best not mention the 2.6 million pounds refit of the media room at Downing Street or the money Johnson has spent on his flat refit as that really would be crass in front of people struggling during the pandemic. He's still spent the money though.

Oh and take that up with Johnson too as he has said:

“We have asked the public sector pay review body to look at what more can be done for nurses, in particular, exceptionally,” he told reporters.

Despite also being in the pandemic the SNP have been able to offer a more significant pay rise to NHS workers:

Staff on pay Bands 1-7 on Agenda for Change (AfC) will receive at least a 4% rise compared to 2020-21 with lower paid employees in line for higher rises

Staff who earn less than £25,000 are guaranteed a minimum increase of more than £1,000, meaning that the lowest AfC pay point will get a 5.4% rise. Those on the highest pay points will get rises of £800

Worth every penny to recruit, retain and reward nursing staff for the skilled, demanding and absolutely vital job they do. Pretty churlish to suggest otherwise.
