Ever changing goalposts....the cynic in me...

....wonders if there is more going on.

First we had to “flatten the curve”. Then we needed to wait for a vaccine. Now we need to wait for a vaccine against a new strain.

But new strains will always appear. There will be a new one come September by the time the next vaccine is out.

I can’t see a way out of this using current strategy but no one is discussing any other strategy.

At what point does it end? When our children have no future? When most service business are gone? When we are all vaccinated every three months?

At what point do we aim to reduce serious illness in the vulnerable and then get on with our lives? We have vaccines that do that.

This isn’t me saying that long covid isn’t a thing or that I’m not worried. But I gravely fear for other things at this point.

I’m no conspiracy theorist usually but it does feel like this is a new world order of control through the back door. There is no dissent. There can be no opposition nor protests

@Floridaflipflops no, I was reading the "what holidays you have booked for this year" thread and noticed where you were going.

MorrisZapp · 10/02/2021 10:26

Extra points for 'Now they're saying...' with no link or reference apart from their friends sharing rumours on social media.

TheMoth · 10/02/2021 10:27

What are they controlling us for? What's in it for them? What are they getting out of us, other than a load of whinging about civil liberties? I'm not sure destroying your OWN economy is a good way to run a country. I'm also not sure people shouting 'totalitarian regime ' really know what one is, either.

I'm not sure making people masks and wash their hands is in the big book of control either.

Imagine all the effort that would go in to all governments in the world agreeing to this massive conspiracy too. Imagine imagining you have it too.

pinkearedcow · 10/02/2021 10:29

@arthurdaly sorry if I misinterpreted you and that you are having a bad day. It is hard on us all. Flowers I don't think threads like this help, which is why I am getting off it now!

arthurdaly · 10/02/2021 10:30

@pinkearedcow I know, I really should get on and do some work.
All I really want is to book bloody Peppa Pig world for DS 3rd birthday in March and I hate that pig 😂

Well, considering protesting is also now illegal, it’s going to take nothing short of mass civil unrest or civil war to get our freedoms back. We’ve sleep walked into a draconian authoritarian regime under the guise of keeping us safe, and it seems most people are only toohappy to keep spreading their cheeks and begging for more.”

Begging for more? Get over yourself. Most of us are miserable as sin but understand why we can't just crack on“

Agree. So much paranoid BS on this thread.

OP "So yes I am outraged. Angry. I feel utterly powerless. Those who seem quite happy to remain lockdown seem to me those who work from home. I genuinely don’t think they realise the absolute maelstrom unfolding for certain sectors and also the young. I don’t know one older person who wants this either.

So what is going on? Follow the money?"

Money is a big factor.

In terms of no one talking about it - many are. You could join the Lockdown Sceptics forum if you need to vent more. I'm sorry for your situation. My industry has gone too.

It’s also just clearly not true. If the plan is for us to be a totalitarian country, in China’s image, we would living under tight control in a covid-free society, with closed borders, as they are doing now.

Instead we have constant restrictions, always belatedly enforced, and high levels of virus circulating - the worst of all worlds, and due in part to governmental incompetence.

DuchessofHastings1 · 10/02/2021 13:04

@LunaHeather thanks for the advice for lockdown sceptic forum.

I have only just had a quick scan and it seems not full of conspiracy theorists like some would believe, but people presenting figures from ONS and so on.

MargaretThursday · 10/02/2021 13:14

It would be far more worrying if they didn't change the goalposts in the face of the ever changing situation.

I am far more worried when the government says "This is what's happening and I will not change" and doesn't change even when the situation is changed.

Wildswim · 10/02/2021 13:33

the roadmap is due to be published 22 Feb.

I've heard Matt Hancock talking about it and it it's frightening. More and more he appears to be heading towards a zero Covid policy. I wouldn't pin my hopes on this road map.

And the op is absolutely right - the goalposts keep changing.

RedGoldAndGreene · 10/02/2021 13:36

Whitty, Valance and Van-Tam have all suggested Covid is here to stay (in numbers that the NHS can hopefully manage) with people getting jabbed annually like the flu vaccine so I'm hoping that Hancock isn't ignoring the science on this Angry

I have found it sane but every post has to be cleared so there are periods of inactivity when the mods take a well earned break.

Anyone can 'present' ONS stats, the problem is cherry picking what suits an agenda and doing so out of context. That forum is run by Toby Young, who has been consistently proven wrong about just about everything to do with the pandemic and has zero expertise on infectious diseases. He has also used his website to give a platform to cranks.

People can pick facts what suit their agenda -thats whatbour mainstream media and government are doing.
100,000 deaths, worse death rate in Europe. We must stay in, stay safe but then you could die a heart attack, test positive for Covid and it be a statistic. Like Captain Tom Moore. A 100 year old man with pneumonia will be down as a Covid death also.

When these figures are to justify these lockdowns and restrictions, they need to be more clear and accurate.

Haffiana · 10/02/2021 14:10

Hmm

No thanks. I'd rather scientists worked out when it was the right time to ease restrictions, not Joe Public. Which scientists and governments will do, by the way. We aren't in this forever, whatever some would like to think.
thefallthroughtheair · 10/02/2021 17:20

It is simply not true that many young people are dying of Covid. That has been absolutely clear from the outset. This is, as a fact, primarily a killer of the over-80s. What we do about that fact, ie whether to lock down or not, is a matter of policy and obviously different people will have different views of the cost-benefit analysis, which has not been done in a timely, honest or in-depth way by the government.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 10/02/2021 17:30

'I'd rather scientists worked out when it was the right time to ease restrictions, not Joe Public. Which scientists and governments will do, by the way. We aren't in this forever, whatever some would like to think.'

Its bizarre isn't it. A petition fgs, as if they won't be discussing the future constantly. Wait for Feb 22nd they'll be giving us some idea of the next steps, no need for marches and pitchforks just yet.

pinkearedcow · 10/02/2021 18:37

That petition has been up a while and doesn't have many signatures. I think people trust the scientists more than this thread would suggest.
