Will the mask refuses ever be forgiven, do you think?

I don’t think people will forget who they were. I’ve seen a few shunned in school, and on the street, and what really stood out to me, is changing their minds and putting a mask on didn’t actually change the response they were getting from their community. The feeling was too little too late, I think

OP posts:
Grooticle · 02/02/2021 18:05

If I honestly thought that people in my community behaved or thought like this, I would be making plans to move.

I don’t know anybody in real life who is “shunning” anybody.

PhilCornwall1 · 02/02/2021 18:06

Yeah, I think they’ll be social pariahs and have to live like nomads, wandering from town to town or maybe have to live in the woods.

I'm scoping out a tree. Think I might go for a nice oak.

3littlewords · 02/02/2021 18:07

Is this a wind up OP?

OliveTree75 · 02/02/2021 18:10

Oh dear.

ScalpHelp · 02/02/2021 18:11

Glad I live in a massive city where this could never happen due to anonymity! I can imagine smaller villages noticing people they know doing this and holding a grudge

I do wear a mask btw. In fact, I wore them before they became compulsory. I had lots of guys tell me I’m “too pretty to wear one” and “take that shit off and get some fresh air” 🙄 And had this woman in Sainsbury’s point at me and laugh to the cashier/her family as apparently I was being ridiculous as masks are pointless. I always wondered what her reaction was when masks became compulsory!

chocolateorangeinhaler · 02/02/2021 18:19

Has there been any research on wearing masks actually increased transmission? Before you all scream hear me out.

Wearing a mask makes people touch their face far more than they would if they don't wear a mask with all the putting it on/off etc. I was told by an infection department last week that all the little clusters of outbreaks are not because someone in the office didn't have a mask on but because everyone in the office used the same kettle or fridge. So it's getting spread by touching surfaces that are covered in virus.

So regardless of if you wear a mask or not if you are touching things in a shop and then get in your car, first thing you do is take your mask off thus spreading any virus you might have touched all over your face.

Shops all have hand sanitizer on the way in, but nobody has yet said it might be a good idea to use it on the way out.

Regarding touch points at work, we now have a Rota and an alarm set to go off every hour. When the bell rings the kettle handle, fridge handle, door handle and frame, photocopier all get cleaned with a wipe. We also have a no using anyone else's phone, keyboard, stapler, hole punch and especially no sharing pens.

Raaaaaaarr · 02/02/2021 18:25

I have certainly noted behaviours from people I know and look at them in a different light now. I can't help it.

Jsnn · 02/02/2021 18:40

@PoorReg

Those who met up with their friends/family however might be different situation

Maybe for some of the more judgemental members of society but certainly not all.

I know of one or two who've broken the odd rule and I honestly don't feel it's my place to judge unless I know their situation and I won't do post pandemic either. Raves and house parties is one thing, seeing a family member for a cup of tea is another imo and I can't get worked up about the latter.

Also, as with mask refusers, I wouldn't have a clue who was and wasn't meeting up with family in secret in my wider community 🤷

I'm super liberal. I think personal freedom beats just about anything in society. I think sweden got it right by just giving out recommendations rather than crazy restrictions on freedom.

So I wouldn't in any way judge anyone for seeing their family, that's their personal decision.

I'm just saying for those that do and will judge, masks aren't the things to judge someone over. They aren't the determining factor when it comes to spread.

Daisysflowers · 02/02/2021 18:45

I can’t even remember what day of the week we are on let alone who was wearing a mask at the school gate in November (when we was last there) and who wasn’t!

Don’t be so ridiculous!

TheChip · 02/02/2021 18:52

I wonder if I will be shunned when this is all over. I wear a mask when I go into shops and stuff, but I just stopped going into the school yard when they said masks needed to be worn. My child was old enough to go in himself.

I just couldn't wrap my head around it. I had to walk and try and socially distance through hordes of parents on the way to my kids school, passing another school before hitting the path to our school (Impossible to socially distance by the way). To put a mask on to enter a yard that is marked for social distancing, while no child was required to wear a mask. Im pleased no child was, but it made the whole thing absolutely pointless. The kids mingling inside of the school means that if there was going to be a spread, there would be regardless of whether parents were masked or not. They're not masked around their child at home. Or even on their way to the yard!

Calmandmeasured1 · 02/02/2021 19:08

Wearing a mask makes people touch their face far more than they would if they don't wear a mask with all the putting it on/off etc.
That's a sweeping generalisation. I don't, precisely because we have been made aware of it and have been told how to put masks on and take them off.

I was told by an infection department last week that all the little clusters of outbreaks are not because someone in the office didn't have a mask on but because everyone in the office used the same kettle or fridge. So it's getting spread by touching surfaces that are covered in virus.
People should have more sense than to share those facilities, whether companies provide them or not. It would be better for staff to take their own flasks and bottles of drinks. I think that companies should have made their offices more safe and secure by not allowing staff to use communal refreshment areas for the duration of the pandemic. I thought most had closed canteens so shouldn't drinks areas also close?

So regardless of if you wear a mask or not if you are touching things in a shop and then get in your car, first thing you do is take your mask off thus spreading any virus you might have touched all over your face.
Well, the first thing I do is sanitise my hands before removing the mask by its ear straps. It's common sense.

Shops all have hand sanitizer on the way in, but nobody has yet said it might be a good idea to use it on the way out.
There is sanitiser by self-service checkouts in many supermarkets and also dotted about the stores. Do we really need to have everything spelt out to us continually? Do we need everything provided? We can all buy the pocket-size hand sanitisers to carry around.

MadameBlobby · 02/02/2021 19:10

Forgiven for what?

MadameBlobby · 02/02/2021 19:11

@99victoria

I honestly don't notice if people are wearing masks or not. I wear one if I have to (in shops, at school etc) but I don't really believe they work either. I mean, cases have risen EXPONENTIALLY across the world since people started wearing them!

I take responsibility for socially distancing myself in situations where I can't avoid othere people. Consequently, I don't need to judge other people for whether or not they're wearing a mask

Snookie00 · 02/02/2021 19:15

No - I doubt they will be. I’m pretty sure that petty people who are covid obsessive like you will continue to hold a grudge forever. Doubt they’ll give a shit about your opinion though.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 02/02/2021 19:17

I will forgive them sooner than I will forgive absolutely self righteous bores like the OP

MsTSwift · 02/02/2021 19:19

I think it’s just you op

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/02/2021 19:22

I don't think people notice.

A friend mentioned that her DH refuses to wear a mask - I've seen him many times without noticing that he wasn't wearing one. Unless they go on about it you would assume they forgot.

BoredBeforelEvenBegan · 02/02/2021 19:22

I'm saving my ire for those who are genuinely responsible for ignoring life saving advice, allowing the spread to explode and for the horrific death toll - the government.

All this wanging on about - and threatening never to forgive - a tiny minority who (for whatever reasons, and you cannot know them OP) don't wear masks is just smoke and mirrors. Creating a climate where we place the blame on each other and not at the feet of those who truly deserve it is done 100% by design and a is convenient distraction.

BoredBeforelEvenBegan · 02/02/2021 19:23

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow

Yep!
Smartiepants79 · 02/02/2021 19:37

Look up the word ‘propaganda’
I wear my mask, I social distance, I haven’t seen my beloved grandmother for 6 months....
BUT I can’t get worked up over the very few people that choose differently.
I would certainly never remember for longer 24 hours anyone I’d seen without a mask.
Even if I knew who they were. I live in quite a small village and I’ve not noticed anything you’re talking about.
Thank god.

Againstmachine · 02/02/2021 19:43

People being shunned really? I'm sure people are making up stories now.

A society than shuns non mask wearers is a society that probably isn't worth saving.

peak2021 · 02/02/2021 19:44

I don't think grudges will be held against such people.

What I hope is not forgotten when the time comes to vote is the incompetence of the government response last March and September.

FTMF30 · 02/02/2021 19:47

Are you trying to speak this into existence? Thankfully, I don't think the majority of people are so petty and pathetic.

BonnieDundee · 02/02/2021 19:49

Maybe when this is over gangs of you can publicly shave their heads to humiliate them

We could bring back the village stocks too.

SomethingOnce · 02/02/2021 19:50

I've got some eggs and flour at the ready. Just need some feathers to really get the point across.

You forgot the tar.
