I know this is a really self indulgent post. So sorry in advance.
I'm worried about captain Tom. I know its ridiculous, I dont know him. Maybe because hes just a bit older than my dad would have been.
But I feel if he dies with coronavirus , it'll be the final straw for me. Hes been the only bright light in this.
If he doesn't recover I think I'll sink.

You're not alone in this. I said the same to DH last night. It feels like the virus is extinguishing hope itself.

ssd · 01/02/2021 18:42

Exactly

OP posts:
whatswithtodaytoday · 01/02/2021 18:42

He's a very elderly man OP, and was already I'll with pneumonia when he caught Covid. Hopefully he'll be ok, but it's possible he won't be and that's not an unlikely outcome. It's just very, very sad.

ParkheadParadise · 01/02/2021 18:50

I wouldn't want to live to his age.

Crunchymum · 01/02/2021 18:51

As a pretty prolific poster, I'm sure you'll have noticed the other threads (and the fact they both went a certain way and were deleted)

I fully expect this one to be the same.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 01/02/2021 18:55

This is the fourth thread so expect it to be deleted op. People can't seem to wish him well without criticising his recent holiday. I mean there's a time and place and when someone is very sick in hospital that isn't it.

I wish him well, there must be good hope of recovery as surely his gp would have suggested keep comfortable at home with palliative domiciliary 02 if recovery wasn't likely.

ssd · 01/02/2021 19:04

I didnt realise there were other threads not just wishing him well.

Oh well, mn is a weird place these days.

Would be so depressing if he dies of Covid.

NerrSnerr · 01/02/2021 19:16

I said to my husband a few months ago that when Captain Tom dies it will be classed as a tragedy even though he's a very old man and it is going to happen at some point. Of course it will be sad for all of his loved ones but he's an old man who has lived a long life and appears to have had a happy one too.

enjoyingscience · 01/02/2021 19:20

Every death is sad, but they call pneumonia old mans friend for a reason. Better to go fast at 100 than slowly. Plus, no one can claim he was taken before his time...

That said, if anything happened to David Attenborough I’d be broken.

staceybeaker · 01/02/2021 19:46

I know what you mean OP he was brilliant rallying everyone together last year and it feels very depressing that he has coronavirus. Hope he gets over this

skoobysnax · 01/02/2021 20:53

He's had a great life, enjoyed his celebrity last year, had a luxury holiday in Barbados at Christmas and has lived to be 100.

Rosehip10 · 01/02/2021 20:54

Sturgeon couldn't care less about getting early years back.

willFOURbagsbeenough · 01/02/2021 20:56

OP you should get some counselling. It’s not healthy to base your own mental well being on whether a totally unrelated stranger dies.

PicsInRed · 01/02/2021 21:03

@greyballoo

Would be so depressing if he dies of Covid.
I'm not a hardcore fan, but I'll concede it would be a bit Hmm if he died of covid. I saw that Larry King died of it a few days ago. They've had a good innings, but it's not a nice way to go and it's all just Hmm.
starch23 · 01/02/2021 21:08

He was positioned as a figurehead to help people pull together and feel hopeful and purposeful. I think it's fair enough that the op and others feel attached to him as a result.

From the latest statement, I fear they are trying to prepare people for him dying. Which is sad. Yes, he's elderly but a loss of a loved one is still a painful experience.

TheoriginalLEM · 01/02/2021 21:15

Well hes done more to boost community and morale in this country than Boris!!

I will be sad if he dies but hes 100. Whilst id love for him to recover i just pray that he is able to have his family around him and is kept comfortable.

ParkheadParadise · 01/02/2021 21:17

Glad his family is with him.

greyballoo · 01/02/2021 21:18

@PicsInRed they are old, its not Covid really it's anything. It's just depressing as he was a ray of positivity to us all. But he's 100. The fact he could walk at all was a miracle but he's lived healthily beyond majority of people we can't be sad at that. The flu or a sickness bug could kill him

IHateCoronavirus · 01/02/2021 21:28

Best wishes to him and his family.
My DF is nearly 90. He said “if you would have asked me a few years ago did I want to live to see 90 I would have said not on your nelly. Now, I don’t want to die.” He’s lived a good and long life, but I don’t want to be without him.

AuntyClementine · 01/02/2021 21:32

@ParkheadParadise

I wouldn't want to live to his age.
I’d love to, as long as I have my mental faculties and are relatively well physically.
Calmandmeasured1 · 01/02/2021 21:36

Last night was similar to the moment I heard the PM was hospitalised. Quite shocking. I hope to goodness Captain Sir Tom gets well from this. He's a wonderful character.

ParkheadParadise · 01/02/2021 21:55

@AuntyClementine
I knew someone who was 100. She was mentally on the ball but not physically she was bedridden. But she was totally miserable. Her husband 2 children and all her friends were dead. It's always stuck with me and I wouldn't want to live to that age.
