Says here novavax won't be available until the second half of the year though www.gov.uk/government/news/novavax-publishes-positive-efficacy-data-for-its-covid-19-vaccine

So doesn't sound like it'll be able to speed up the initial vaccination schedule. Might provide boosters I guess.

JanuaryChill · 28/01/2021 23:13

Can't recall anything Marsha.

TheSunIsStillShining · 28/01/2021 23:27

question is, by that time how prevalent will the SA mutation be ....

OP posts:
TeaInTheGarden · 28/01/2021 23:47

Sure I read there were no serious infections with the SA variant though. So less efficacy but still a great result for hospital admissions and deaths. Not got a source for that so correct me if I’m wrong please.

ATieLikeRichardGere · 28/01/2021 23:52

This somewhat punctures my optimism after those Novavax results mobile.twitter.com/PeterKolchinsky/status/1354929042965864451

JanuaryChill · 29/01/2021 00:08

Not good. There was a scientist on R4 this morning saying the main thing we have to watch and worry about is these variants and there will be more.....

TheSunIsStillShining · 29/01/2021 00:22

So far the P. one seems to be the most robust.
I wonder if in a dystopian fantasy there could be a scenario where money is not the main driver... and P. shares know how (retains licence), and all pharma factories capable of making mRNA vacc do so, flooding the world, whilst others have enough of a breather to continue research and proper trials... and...then I wake up.
Or maybe Bezos and co who made a couple of fortunes just through covid would fund this. Not from their pre-2020 money, but purely from the profits they made off of covid.

The new variant issue is very concerning.

Tea would be good to hear more on that from anyone.

Re Twitter thread, I have been wondering about that, the idea of variants extending all this are not good

Kate Bingham good on R4 - she has made very good decisions

lurker101 · 29/01/2021 08:44

@TheSunIsStillShining it’s a nice idea, but I’m not sure how much that would even help, many countries with large/previously large case numbers such as India are considered highly unlikely to have the cold chain storage available to enable rollout of a vaccine like Pfizer across large populations and large geographical areas. Pfizer is a fantastic vaccine, but it doesn’t seem to be the solution outside of very developed countries with existing logistical solutions, which is why many countries are so hopeful for AZ and other easier transported vaccines

TrashedWarrior · 29/01/2021 08:44

Thanks sun

TheSunIsStillShining · 29/01/2021 08:58

@lurker101
It is a thought experiment, not an actually thought out plan :)
And it would be a massive mistake to put all eggs in one basket, so just an interim solution.

This site contains daily updated data on Israel for a real-life vaccine trial. Looking good so far.

oneglassandpuzzled · 29/01/2021 09:24

Israeli 60+ and 80+ age-group serious cases declining, and these are the most-vaccinated groups? Is that a crude summary?!

oneglassandpuzzled · 29/01/2021 09:27

But in these groups, especially the 70+ groups, the majority have had both doses?

TheSunIsStillShining · 29/01/2021 09:56

@oneglassandpuzzled

That’s exactly what I did, hence the question marks! Have I made correct conclusion?

oneglassandpuzzled · 29/01/2021 10:54

Seem to have missed the please/ thank you there, sorry.

PatriciaHolm · 29/01/2021 11:29

@oneglassandpuzzled

But in these groups, especially the 70+ groups, the majority have had both doses?
Yes! - the Israel data shows that of the 60+ group, 82% have had a second dose.

New cases in all age groups appear to be (very) slowly falling, though active serious cases seem to be dropping (or at least plateauing) in the older groups. Early days for data still though.

Realistically, the protection from those 2nd doses hasn't kicked in yet as they have only being administering them for about a fortnight.

CarrotPuff · 29/01/2021 11:34

.

oneglassandpuzzled · 29/01/2021 11:50

Thank you, Patricia. Yes, it is slow but positive, isn’t it.

wintertravel1980 · 29/01/2021 12:22

The new weekly ONS survey is out.

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/bulletins/coronaviruscovid19infectionsurveypilot/29january2021

On the face of it, the results do not look great - the prevalence in England has not changed week on week and remains at 1 in 55.

However, interestingly, if we look at the underlying details (e.g. Section 14), the positive swab numbers include a continuously growing percentage of cases “where the virus was too low for the variant to be identifiable”. Since the majority of ONS participants are now swabbed monthly, I am wondering if ONS is picking up a meaningful percentage of people infected at the end of December who only got tested during the week ending January 23 and whose PCR test came back positive due to old virus.

ceeveebee · 29/01/2021 12:39

It’s odd that the ONS survey shows no decrease in the school aged population.
And if I look at the regional map for Greater Manchester, the figures they show are almost the complete opposite of what is being reported through testing - with Rochdale and Oldham the highest boroughs in GM in the ONS survey but lowest in the dashboard reported figures. This does make me wondered whether the ONS tests are picking up cases from weeks ago (as Oldham and Rochdale did have high prevalence in December, but not anymore per dashboard reported figures)
