Thanks for the new thread, Sun. Not sure what Fate means. These threads have been so helpful all along. The odd blip and fall out, but in general balanced and thoughtful.

How we choose to react to something is far more telling sometimes.

Thanks to all the data contributors and for those who have started this conversation and others that are carrying the torch. Thanks @TheSunIsStillShining.

re the LF tests ,as said above I think it's the swabbing that can be the problem as done correctly it's pretty unpleasant .

I posted this above and can see that accuracy declines when carried out by lay people but I'm not able to understand if the figures show a concerning decrease or just a negligible one .Can anyone help ?

Phase 4 evaluation
A further series of individuals were recruited from consecutive cases from COVID19 Testing centres with tests performed by self-trained individuals and the results were compared to the Phase 3b shown above. Performance was optimal when the LFD was used by laboratory scientists (156/197 LFDs positive [79.2%, 95% CI: 72.8-84.6%])] versus trained healthcare-workers (92/126 LFDs positive [73.0%, 95% CI: 64.3 80.5%]) and self-trained members of the public given a protocol (214/372 LFDs positive [57.5%, 95 CI:52.362.6%];p

MRex · 28/01/2021 20:58

@peridito - it's pretty much how it looks; lab scientists 79.2%, trained healthcare workers 73%, random 57.5%.
To be honest, those stats are way higher than the "it only catches 50% of cases" commonly banded about (if you aren't Jon Deeks with his own special figures).

I don't know if this is of any interest but ,DP and self ( both over 70 ) recently vaccinated at a SE London medical centre .He had his a week ago and had Pfizer ,mine yesterday was Astrazenica .

I might have missed it, sorry if it was talked about.
do we know if they are running the 65+ vaccinations like an actual trial for AZ*- i mean like they do in Israel?

*I keep seeing so many times mis-typed name, so rather just shorthand it :)

Thanks @Firefliess you’ve much more eloquently put what I’ve been thinking - additional LFT to identify asymptomatic individuals not otherwise tested = good (even if it does reduce positivity you’re still finding the same/possibly more cases) used in lieu of PCR (which we don’t believe is happening widely) = bad.

MRex · 28/01/2021 21:27

@TheSunIsStillShining - they're capturing everything and will produce reports. Here are the details:
"COVID-19 vaccine monitoring reports - GOV.UK" www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccine-monitoring-reports. Sorry, I thought I posted before wondering about when the first report was due, but maybe got distracted.

Genpact is doing AI analysis of side effects too, which may be interesting.

MRex · 28/01/2021 21:37

Woohoooooo! Novovax slides in at 89% efficacy!

What's particularly good about Novovax is that it targets the protein rather than the spike, so it is priming the system to attack covid with totally dfferent antibodies than Pfizer, Moderna and Oxford AZ. If I were having my pick of vaccine, personally I'd love to be in a trial for one Oxford Astrazeneca and one Novovax, grab that virus in two places. (Yes, I know that kind of tweaking is a year away or more, I'm just excited.)

littlestpogo · 28/01/2021 21:55

That’s great news on novavax!

Anecdota here but today I went for my first ‘dose’ of either placebo or the J&J Janssen for the trial I’m just starting on. It’s part of the trial to see whether two doses gives longer term immunity than the single dose.

wintertravel1980 · 28/01/2021 22:01

Amazing news re Novavax.

According to FT, the 89% efficacy is a blended result between the 95% efficacy against the old strain and the 85% efficacy against the new Kent strain.

The efficacy in South Africa was lower - 60% for people without HIV and a lower number for people with HIV resulting in a blended efficacy rate of 49%.

60% is still good but it does show that the South African strain is more problematic than the UK variant.

I was just reading this too

Do we know where we are with other the vaccines and SA variant in terms of any lab testing etc? I’m losing track and I can’t remember if we’d had good news for any
