Why is this the new thing that EVERYBODY uses as the reason that things can’t be done, it’s totally overused. Or am I being super sensitive?

I rang dominos a few days ago to try and get some meat put on a vegan base because whilst DC has dairy allergy I still like meat..

The response: ‘no, I can’t do that because of covid we’re not taking orders over the phone..’

I didn’t want to order over the phone, I just wanted to call and for them to swap a topping or two, pizza is same price.

She laughed said that’s not my problem I can’t change the rules bye.

It’s becoming part of every interaction I have, something is ‘because of covid’ when in actual fact covid hasn’t changed what I’m asking for for the logistics of it.

Has anyone else heard anyone say something obscure.. ‘because of covid’?

@StealthPolarBear well first of all the covid patients are in hospital already as opposed to bringing in people from home into hospital for outpatient appts, and secondly to improve their breathing ability and get them off oxygen quicker and therefore discharged home

MistressoftheDarkSide · 24/01/2021 16:43

By the logic of some posters the next bit of government advice will be emotionally blackmailing people into not getting pregnant. If there is any kind of depopulation agenda this would slot right in...... "Getting pregnant will overburden the NHS"

Be good for manufacturers of contraception though.

Feeling particularly cynical today obviously.....

Skipsurvey · 24/01/2021 16:45

people getting annoyed since they cant have non routine anaesthetic procedures because the anaesthetists are all working on the covid wards, they get short shrift from me, they shouldnt have cancelled it twice when they were offered it 4 months ago!

NommyChompers · 24/01/2021 16:47

At my place of work (dentist) we are flat out doing our best but we are facing a huge backlog; social distancing; extra cleaning so cannot offer the full number of appointments we used to - also staff often isolating/kids school bubble burst or what have you so we are at reduced capacity. Patients trying to book check ups don’t get it so I assume other businesses doing things for mystery COVID reasons are legit and I just don’t understand the inner workings. A lot of people are just trying their best. Also in my industry brexit and delays at Dover are also messing with us which doesn’t help!

I’m trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt - everyone is very on edge these days so let’s cut everyone a bit more slack I say!

Nutrigrainygoodness · 24/01/2021 16:49

DWs GP said to her the other day 'we might not be able to prescribe your meds because of covid' DW questions it and gp says 'we will need a nurse to administer the injection, and we aren't having patients in ATM'
Fine fair enough, it's not a matter of life or death.
The next day DW gets a phone call asking her to come in for a non urgent blood test. Hmm OK then.

NommyChompers · 24/01/2021 16:53

Also - to clarify the NHS vs private dentistry thing - I do both but during different contracted hours so often have space in private time but not NHS - so only offering private out of contracted NHS hours (where nurses are paid overtime rates the (heavily reduced) NHS funding won’t cover. This is to try and stop the practice going under.

NommyChompers · 24/01/2021 16:59

And I’m seeing plenty of NHS check ups now!

Maybe reduced menus / lack of vegan options are because chefs are social distancing? Maybe less parcel sorters due to sickness/isolating/social distancing.

Maybe less face to face GP appts. Because there are others that are more sick than you.

Maybe the physios are on zoom because they are clinically vulnerable.

Maybe everyone is just doing their best.

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2021 17:02

Thanks mummy87

Mummyme87 · 24/01/2021 17:06

Everyone is really struggling in many many ways, we won’t all understand everyone’s individual circumstances as to why they can’t provide the service required as we aren’t those people/services/companies. What we do know is though, life is shit and tough right now. We are fed up, all of us. Let’s support eachother, we are all trying (and I say this as a HCP who regularly gets abused by patients and their partners because things just aren’t the way we want or need it to be).

NommyChompers · 24/01/2021 17:08

@Mummyme87 - exactly! I 100% agree

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/01/2021 17:15

@NommyChompers I might have had more sympathy for my dentist if they hadn’t told me they’d been late reopening so they could decorate the surgery!

I’m supposed to be having work done at the private dentist next week and I’m wondering whether to postpone until cases come down. It’s not urgent (at the moment) so I don’t know what to do

C152 · 24/01/2021 17:26

Agreed. It's the latest in a long line of lazy, computer-says-no type of attitudes - another main one being "I can't blag blah blah because of data protection".

Downtothelastbottleofwine · 24/01/2021 19:02

Some of it is absolutely the bastion of the unwilling if not incompetent. I was part way through my treatment with my dentist, had a few issues she did her best wuth in lockdown 1 as they werent open. Went to see her whne they were open to finish it and didn't get charged. Queried it and they practice said that's right because they didn't complete it in their time framework. I mean, they didnt have a choice but it was a pleasant surprise!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/01/2021 19:16

...another main one being "I can't blah blah blah because of data protection"

Don't even go there - though GDPR seems to be yesterday's news with all the contacts we're expected to give now

As for "routes round shops", at my local M&S we used to go through the tills, turn left and straight out of the door. Now, however, that one's closed so it means ^going back through the store and out of a different door

I did ask about that one and was told it's "council regulations" ... sounds about right Hmm

Tanfastic · 24/01/2021 19:21

@wewillmeetagain

I completely agree, it's just become an excuse for cost cutting, lazy, bad service.
This.
User478 · 24/01/2021 23:21

Maybe if they don't want us to overburden the NHS with pregnancies they should allow people to get the pill! I can't have a repeat prescription as they aren't doing pill check ups but they will prescribe an emergency 3 month supply once. So I guess I just call them after the baby's born, right?

2020canfuckitself · 24/01/2021 23:44

Parish council closing the dog park (fenced in field) because of covid.

Cannot have a filling unless I go private

Cannot have my smear Angry

nex18 · 24/01/2021 23:54

I must be lucky then, between me and my 2 children we have managed dentist, optician (including new contact lens trial), physio, blood test, immunisation, ultrasound scan, face to face pill check, face to face emergency GP appointment. Not due my smear yet though.

I've also had opticians and smear test and 2 coils fitted!

2 coils? Most people can't get one fitted 🤣
Mummyme87 · 25/01/2021 18:44

I’ve also had two coils fitted in the last 6months

samanthawashington · 25/01/2021 18:46

@SugarBlissOrJ17

Yes! So annoying. I want to return a faulty item I bought online, so the other day I looked into the process and saw a message on the company website said they’re not doing returns or refunds bEcAuSe oF cOvId....their products are still available to buy though so assuming someone is on-site to dispatch them!
It's against consumer law to refuse a refund, or return, particularly if the item is faulty
XenoBitch · 25/01/2021 18:48

It is overused. I recall a post on MN where a lady went to a café with her husband. She wanted a tea and he wanted a coffee. They were told "no, because of Covid", yet they could order separately and still have what they wanted. Was utterly baffling!

samanthawashington · 25/01/2021 18:50

To be fair, so many people are working from home or they are short staffed because staff are isolating or sick, its poor service everywhere. Plusnet usually answer the phone in minutes, today 3 hours to report the WiFi has gone down
