Why is this the new thing that EVERYBODY uses as the reason that things can’t be done, it’s totally overused. Or am I being super sensitive?

I rang dominos a few days ago to try and get some meat put on a vegan base because whilst DC has dairy allergy I still like meat..

The response: ‘no, I can’t do that because of covid we’re not taking orders over the phone..’

I didn’t want to order over the phone, I just wanted to call and for them to swap a topping or two, pizza is same price.

She laughed said that’s not my problem I can’t change the rules bye.

It’s becoming part of every interaction I have, something is ‘because of covid’ when in actual fact covid hasn’t changed what I’m asking for for the logistics of it.

Has anyone else heard anyone say something obscure.. ‘because of covid’?

Oh yes. We have a share of freehold with our neighbours upstairs who are selling. It’s taken far longer than it should to get to the stage of signing everything because our solicitor is currently only working one day a week ‘because of Covid’.

Wingingitsince2018 · 24/01/2021 02:40

It isn't just companies being CFs with this, it is customers too! I work for a leisure/entertainment company and we are getting load of emails from people about extending gift vouchers because of the lockdowns as we are closed. Obviously, we do this for those who have been affected, but I have had at least 10 people email to ask for this 'because covid' and when I search their voucher code on the system it expired in 2019...

FTEngineerM · 24/01/2021 07:07

Ah, I’ve just remembered another one over the summer when restrictions were lightened.

Local park has a cafe and seating area with a toilet inside, totally empty as it was everyone’s first day back after lockdown, there was a 1 way system in the building but so they could save time they left a gap for THEM to walk through.

After purchasing two drinks and nobody else around I walked to the door, saw the gap, just shouted if it was ok to use the toilet and she said no not this way walk around because of covid. It’s one way you can’t go in that way because of covid. The toilet was about 2m away from the door I wanted to go in and 20-25m if I’d have gone around.

I was a few weeks PP and my pelvic floor was not what it once was so I was so stressed as I ran around the bloody building, to use the one way system for customers even though there were no others there.

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss I understand staff have a right to work in ‘safety’ that’s become a fucking tag line aswell but the thats a different thread. There is no difference what so ever to dominos for example if they offer reduced fat cheese or not, they literally just pick cheese from the pot next to the normal cheese pot when making a pizza.. deliveries, same because if someone’s having either cheese it’s still 1 x cheese. Storing.. same it’s still 1 x cheese. In my last example above I wouldn’t have affected the ‘safety’ of staff or customers, because there weren’t any, when I slipped through the normal door to the toilet. Even though they leave a gap for themselves because it’s obviously annoying to have to walk around.

Now going to read everyone’s posts with my latte Grin thanks for sharing it certainly lightened my evening.

Fucking sick of hearing people whining about getting pregnant during a pandemic if I’m honest. What did you expect? 🙄

God yeah why didn’t we think of that, let’s not reproduce, heck thats a great idea that’ll free up a load of beds, there wouldn’t be a boom of anything straight after.

Serious question: why can’t I have a baby in a pandemic? I’ve already had one and now I’m expecting number 2, I know no different.

*WalrusWife

I’m pregnant and have developed pelvic and hip pain. The NHS physio won’t see me “cos Covid” but the physio at the private hospital will.

Fucking sick of hearing people whining about getting pregnant during a pandemic if I’m honest. What did you expect? 🙄*

She wasn't whining about getting pregnant during a pandemic..? She was "whining" about the NHS physio saying they can't see her because of covid. She just happens to be pregnant right now. No need for the anger...

FTEngineerM · 24/01/2021 07:19

@Heyahun The dominos thing and post office thing is because of the extra demand and less staff though

Nah that’s not true; whether I choose reduced fat cheese or normal cheese has no bearing on staffing levels, there is still one portion of cheese on my pizza and all the person has to do is read.

I also don’t understand no phone orders, yet they pick up the phoneHmm you’re already there touching the item why not do something useful with it?

@heathergem a lot of branch staff are manning phone lines in the afternoon because calls have gone through the roof with mortgage holidays, bounceback loans, arrears etc.

supersonicginandtonic · 24/01/2021 07:26

@SupermarketStress well when I got pregnant back in July things were improving, didn't expect it to be like this agajn.

Beaniecats · 24/01/2021 08:03

@Ilovelblue

In September, when things were relatively relaxed, a friend and I were at a National Trust property and went in the shop at the end. There was nobody in apart from the shop assistant and ourselves. In error, we went the wrong way round the shop and she screamed at us so we had to come outside and go in the other way!
We got told off for breaking toilet rules at an english heritage place.
Rubblydubbly · 24/01/2021 08:39

@SupermarketStress I got pregnant before the pandemic became a ‘pandemic’ and then my pregnancy care was shocking. Wish I was a bloody psychic so I could foresee what would happen. Stupid me.

EatingAllTheCookies · 24/01/2021 08:51

Not a single GP would see me when I was telling them my baby dc was dairy intolerant.
When I eventually after 4m when baby was 6m got a paediatrian apt. Which was over the phone she was fuming that a gp hadn't seen the baby. Was all done via text pic messages and one video call! Despite me saying he was under weight. Skin bleeding as was so sore. Upset tummy resulting in clothes that wouldn't even wash up 3 times a day.. We went through a lot of baby grows that had to be binned.

At that point I said to the gp I would go to the surgery and not move till I was seen. Then they eventually tried a soy milk. (had tried others) within days it was like having a new baby. Skin almost clear. No upset tummy.

All Because of covid! I even asked if I could see a gp outside under the gazebo but they wouldn't.

Dhs vasectomy apt didn't happen because of covid and now needs another refferal because they lost his due to covid!

Dominos can't do half and half pizza because of covid!

Ludo19 · 24/01/2021 09:02

@LemmysAceCard

Awwwww your dog sounds such a character x

We did that later on in the year and are practising that now. It's better doing it that way than having to take the clients temperature at the door which we did too 🙄

theviewfromhalfwaydown · 24/01/2021 09:37

My daughter developed an eating disorder during the first lockdown she had been losing weight before but not a significant amount but during lockdown she effectively went on hunger strike. The drs would only do telephone consultations so spoke to me but insisted they spoke to her as she’s 15. They then decided I was being an over the top mum as she had told them she was 10st and eating fine. She wasn’t 10st and refused to stand on the scales so I couldn’t tell them what she was. After many calls and her not being able to walk far without getting dizzy they called her in for a blood test. The bloods came back as being low in iron as well as other things but because she told the dr she was prone to heavy periods they said it was caused by that even though I had told them she hadn’t had one in months. Eventually it got to the point that I took her to A&E as the drs were still refusing to see her and she was admitted for 4 weeks due to heart problems caused by lack of food. Everything since has been online so I’ve had to force her onto scales. She’s had to eat on zoom calls to prove she’s eating which was very stressful and I can’t say I’d want to eat on zoom.

ValpolicellaPrimitivo · 24/01/2021 09:39

I got told off at DS school for not going out the correct 'out' gate which was padlocked.

FTEngineerM · 24/01/2021 09:46

She’s had to eat on zoom calls to prove she’s eating

I’m sorry @theviewfromhalfwaydown that’s happening that’s truly awful. I hope she finds a way out even with these barriers to care

@theviewfromhalfwaydown
Bloody hell. Your poor DD and poor you. I have an ED and those avoidance tactics are completely normal but someone other than you should have seen through them, especially the 10 stone.
As for eating on zoom. I am having the shivers just reading that. What a way to make things a million times worse.
I am really struggling this lockdown and I am a sensible almost 40 who has to at least eat to function for my own DD so I can see how she feels.
An idea, and this may get me some bad comments. Could you work with her to design a 'safe menu' of foods she can control at set times. That helps me to manage but I am at a stage where I know I need to eat as much as it makes me feel sick and disgusted with myself.

redsquirrelfan · 24/01/2021 11:05

Because the NHS is overstretched and they need to prioritise people with genuine emergencies. Do you not watch the news

But GP surgeries aren't dealing with covid cases. It shouldn't be affecting smear tests and blood tests etc unless the nurses who do them are doing vaccinations temporarily (in which case, fair enough, but then say so).

WalrusWife · 24/01/2021 11:08

But why is an private physio happy to see me but the NHS says no? Luckily I am being seen in a couple of weeks! 👍🏻

I do so adore when Mumsnetters get angry about women daring to get pregnant during rona. Especially the ones who already have had their children! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Starbucks where I am are no longer doing soya milk which used to be free “because rona” but you can pay 30p more for nut milk, almond or oat milk. I’m a gold card holder so it’s free for me but still.

DenisetheMenace · 24/01/2021 11:10

Weird. We’re very cautious, abide by all restrictions. Covid doesn’t transmit down the phone now, does it 😁

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/01/2021 11:16

sick of hearing people whining about getting pregnant during a pandemic if I’m honest

I know. A friend seemed shocked when people have asked what she expected. You can want personal wants but can’t moan about the lack of services, staff not willing to risk themselves etc for a choice made knowing the pandemic was going on.

WalrusWife · 24/01/2021 11:17

I have had hyperemesis gravidarum in pregnancy that got a lot worse. My GP refused to see me face to face because of Covid but just prescribed me drugs and emailed my sick notes. The community midwife didn’t reply to my calls. The maternity assessment unit won’t see you until 20 weeks. So I collapsed at home and my DH took me to A&E because nobody else would help. This was after me sobbing down the phone to DH who was working 3 hours drive away that I was dying. I was lying on the bathroom floor unable to move.

A receptionist told me that “morning sickness is a normal part of pregnancy” and that my GP or midwife should be helping me. Bear in mind I was grey and barely able to walk. Despite them refusing to see me or even phone me. A nurse rolled her eyes at me and said they would see me this time but the ED wasn’t for pregnant women, especially because of Covid.

Anyway, she was shocked to discover that my BP was 140bmp and my urine dipstick showed ketones+++. Soon changed her tone with me and I ended to admitted to the emergency gynae ward for a week with bags of IV fluid and anti sickness injections. The obs & gynae reg said I was the sickest HG patient she had ever seen.

The staff on the ward were lovely it has to be said.

WalrusWife · 24/01/2021 11:20

IceCreamAndCandyfloss - would you prefer that maternity services just got cancelled?

Apart from my lack of physio and dreadful HG experience, my care has actually been okay now I’m further on in pregnancy. This was a much wanted pregnancy and at my age I couldn’t wait much longer. Roll on maternity leave! However much anonymous strangers on the internet want me to feel guilty, I’m really happy to be having DD.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/01/2021 11:26

Why is an private physio happy to see me but the NHS says no?

For that matter why are private MH professionals also available but NHS ones not?

Beaniecats · 24/01/2021 11:30

Why can I get a smear or treatment if I pay but nhs not interested??

WalrusWife · 24/01/2021 11:34

IceCreamAndCandyfloss - ah so I can see you’ve already had children so it’s okay for you but nobody else is allowed to get pregnant during a pandemic that might last for years?

Using the logic that nobody can get pregnant during Covid and whine about it, surely over the past 20 years that maternity services have been woeful, women shouldn’t have got pregnant knowing how stretched services are. And have only themselves to blame for birth injuries, still births etc.
