Why is this the new thing that EVERYBODY uses as the reason that things can’t be done, it’s totally overused. Or am I being super sensitive?

I rang dominos a few days ago to try and get some meat put on a vegan base because whilst DC has dairy allergy I still like meat..

The response: ‘no, I can’t do that because of covid we’re not taking orders over the phone..’

I didn’t want to order over the phone, I just wanted to call and for them to swap a topping or two, pizza is same price.

She laughed said that’s not my problem I can’t change the rules bye.

It’s becoming part of every interaction I have, something is ‘because of covid’ when in actual fact covid hasn’t changed what I’m asking for for the logistics of it.

Has anyone else heard anyone say something obscure.. ‘because of covid’?

B&Q wouldn’t cut some timber to size for us because of Covid

Specsavers aren’t doing their buy one get one free on kids frames because of Covid

Dominos not doing the half and half really annoyed me as well!

Most of these are surely just cost cutting and using Covid as an excuse.

Get used to it, OP; for years to come, anything that goes wrong will almost certainly be blamed on Covid whether it has anything to do with it or not

The dominos thing and post office thing is because of the extra demand and less staff though - caused by Covid - they are simplifying things to make the business work / get all the pizzas ordered to be basic standard ones ordered online only rather than personalised ones - it’s quicker!same work post - they can’t cope with too many parcels right now!

I broke a tooth, NHS dentist couldn't see me "because covid". Months of pain ensued, abscess formed, no emergency extraction or treatment possible - covid. Asked about private treatment - certainly! Same dentist, same surgery, loads more money.

@Upsidedownfrown

Ds had hand surgery earlier this week. Gp practice can't see him to check the wound and stitches cos... covid! So back to the children's ward we go. The children's ward who, on discharge, said that if we had any problems getting a dressing appointment with gp practice we should just call to make appointment with them because they're hearing that "reason" a lot at the moment...

We had this too - my DS had eye surgery and ended up with an infection in his wound. The discharge paperwork said that any issues after 48 hours should be directed to the GP, so when signs of infection started appearing I phoned the GP who then refused to see him. I ended up in a telephone battle between the hospital and the GP as the hospital said the GP needs to see him and the GP was still refusing. I ended up taking him to the eye casualty in the end just to get some antibiotic eye drops.

@Cismyfatarse

Spec savers wouldn't let me buy contact lenses - COVID. Even though I have a current prescription and have all my appointments at that branch. I even offered to stay at the door and pay cash or card.

Got a letter from NHS telling me my smear test was urgently overdue. Had no prior warning. Rang Dr as letter said. No. Not doing them. COVID. But, I had a letter. Urgent. COVID.

Rang my docs, got a smear appoint 3 days later, got the results back in 2 weeks. Your GPs must be crap.

My uni (overseas) won't send me a copy of my degree certificate 'because of Covid'. But if I transfer them some money they can do it.

Er, how does that work then?

Just to add, I'm happy to pay - but how come it's impossible because of Covid unless you pay...?!

This is very true, a lot of businesses are using it to their advantage. It’s only going to get much worse though so just grit your teeth!

Booked an appointment with the local indie optician the Monday before lockdown for the following week. Tuesday, I get a phone call telling me they're closing next week. I ask if they can fit me in. Answer comes back, "we are seeing existing customers first because of covid." I ask to reschedule. No. I asked whether they could call me after lockdown. No comes the answer.
I went on specsavers online. Was in for exam and prescription the next day.

Oh, and my dentist will see me because I'm private, but not my DD because she's NHS. In their defence when I asked whether I could pay the £36 for them to see her, they told me to jog on, that her teeth will be fine from June and if I see anything wrong to call them.

Dominos aren’t doing half and half pizzas “because the rona.”

This made me laugh too. What the fuck. We tried Pizza Hut instead and were told we couldn’t order over the phone because of covid 😂😂

How hard is it to prepare half a pizza?

The best (non-health related) one I've seen by a country mile was my local Burger King saying that they were only doing a limited menu. Apparently putting chips in a medium or small fries packet is impossible "because of covid" so they'll only sell you their most expensive chips. I reversed all the way back out of the drive-thru. Do people really believe companies coming out with this shit?

I paid a shedload of money for a private scan at my 20 week appt. Got told that they couldn't print any pictures off for me "because of covid".

I live in Queensland, Australia, and nobody within 2000 miles of us had covid.

@thatonesmine- OMG! You broke a tooth and they wouldn't treat you on the NHS? Shocking! Shock

I assumed that this would be regarded as an emergency. Obviously, a broken tooth can so easily become infected. You really shouldn't have had to pay for that. And what if you couldn't have afforded it ? Sepsis is highly dangerous and all infections/abscesses need prompt treatment. And as you said, once you offered to pay, suddenly Covid wasn't a problem. Hmm

I am getting sick of some companies and organisations using Covid as an excuse for poor service. You just can't get anything done at all, it is extremely frustrating.
@MrsMercedes if your pet is fully vaccinated and gets their regular boosters then you are allowed 3 months grace.

My work gave restart vaccinations for the price of a booster for it lapping due to covid. In the veterinary practice where I am. Staff are rotational, we have to keep staff to a minimum and last year when this all kicked off we were only seeing emergencies. If we were all on duty and someone had covid it could and I stress could rip through the practice and we'd need to close due to being in isolation and/or off ill.
When my dog had his booster last year you had to wait in the car park, and a receptionist would book you in. A vet would then come to your car, collect your animal and take them in to be seen to or vaccinated then would bring them back out. Worked very well.

My dog is a bit strange as he won’t go through a front door that isn’t his own, he refuses to go through the doorway, even if he knows the person, he won’t go through the doors at the pet shop either.

The poor vet who came for my dog was about 5 foot 5 and a slender build. Watching him trying to drag a 9 stone mastiff through the doors was quite entertaining, the whole car park was watching. He resorted to good old bribery in the end.

Just pre-covid me and gp were concerned about baby's hearing. Appt got postponed to a later date. When things started opening up again, they wanted to book a telephone consultation to assess the baby. I explained the absurdity of it and that I didn't think we even needed the appt anymore as hearing seemed fine, and was called back by a doctor. I thankfully was no longer worried, but was told they could still go ahead with the telephone appointment (for baby hearing test, cos COVID) if I wanted.

@the80sweregreat

The dentist wanted me to go for check ups and hygienists all the time because of my receding gums etc etc. I've forgotten what my dentist looks like now!!
I know they can only do emergencies etc but it's been a year next month and it goes to show many all these check ups water just money spinners previously?

I have similar problems plus a history of abscesses. I developed another abscess recently and was very fortunate to get an appt. but the tooth couldn't be saved. The infection's done a lot of damage to the bone as well as infecting my sinuses and ears.

Like so many things, doing without dental care is not sustainable because so many of us are incurring damage along the way.

DH's grandma has a 'chest infection' and a bad back - in her early 90s. Had a covid test - not covid. MIL sent for GP who arrived and did not go near her. Stood at end of room in mask, apron and gloves, asked questions, prescribed antibiotics without examining her, for the 'chest infection'. Said her back will also be helped by the antibiotics- she has osteoporosis, how will antibiotics help that? MIL said not good enough, she is worried because grandma is complaining back pain is also down both legs. GP said it was 'nothing sinister, another symptom of the osteoporosis', left then put head back round door and said 'If it gets worse and she can't walk or she loses feeling in her legs ring 999'.
MIL furious and worried but what can you do?
