Why is this the new thing that EVERYBODY uses as the reason that things can’t be done, it’s totally overused. Or am I being super sensitive?

I rang dominos a few days ago to try and get some meat put on a vegan base because whilst DC has dairy allergy I still like meat..

The response: ‘no, I can’t do that because of covid we’re not taking orders over the phone..’

I didn’t want to order over the phone, I just wanted to call and for them to swap a topping or two, pizza is same price.

She laughed said that’s not my problem I can’t change the rules bye.

It’s becoming part of every interaction I have, something is ‘because of covid’ when in actual fact covid hasn’t changed what I’m asking for for the logistics of it.

Has anyone else heard anyone say something obscure.. ‘because of covid’?

Can you imagine the outcry if I gave you and your child civid fir a face to face slt appt? Plus the very fact that your child cant wpay attention as you describe would actallt tell us loads. Assessments of three year olds are observation based anyhow so remote assessments are a great starting place

firstimemamma · 23/01/2021 21:40

I've been trying for ages to book my blood donation appointment but it's much harder to find an available time and date in the system 'due to Covid'. Meanwhile the costa local to me is a constant trickle of activity. It really is insane.

Beaniecats · 23/01/2021 21:40

I got a letter x 2 my smear is overdue rang go not doing smears. Because of covid
The private gp service is, so will book it there at £120 great Hmm

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 23/01/2021 21:42

I think my favourite was no WiFi on the train because of Covid. (Not recent - this was back in August when cases were much lower). Did they think people were going to needlessly stay on the train beyond their stop to use the WiFi?

firstimemamma · 23/01/2021 21:43

Also next door to the busy Costa is the only children's shoe shop in town. Yep you guessed it - closed due to Covid. (Yes I know there are supermarkets but the selection is crap and there are terrifying signs surrounding the shoes implying that if you touch the shoes you're going to die / kill somebody.)

ramblingsonthego · 23/01/2021 21:44

I was made redundant due to covid...... except when you read the board minutes from last January a new structure was mentioned then. Another lazy arsed company who are using covid as an excuse.

FTEngineerM · 23/01/2021 21:44

So, maybe I’m out of touch, but why are we able to access paid for private health services but not NHS services? Assuming the risk of transmission as said by @DarcyJack would be the same regardless of operator.

@ramblingsonthego sorry to hear that, that must have been a shock to find out!

My GP aren't doing pill check-ups (blood pressure, other important checks) due to Covid. Mine isn't due to March so I'll have to wait and see if I'm 'allowed' one.

FTEngineerM · 23/01/2021 21:46

@WalrusWife that damn half and half has got me too, that is what we used to order Sad

@firstimemamma costas are a vital part of society, who needs GP appointments when you can have pure arabica

Because the NHS is overstretched and they need to prioritise people with genuine emergencies. Do you not watch the news?
DK123 · 23/01/2021 21:51

Dominos are doing a "limited menu" and you can't have olives, because of Covid. Seriously!!!

firstimemamma · 23/01/2021 21:52

@FTEngineerM haha it's just ridiculous I know! I had the fun of changing my son's nappy on a cold train station bench as the station toilets were 'shut due to Covid'. World really has gone mad.

@jmscp

The speech and language therapist can't see my 3yo face to face "because of covid" Instead they want to do a video call With a 3 year old With the attention span of a gnat Said daughter won't even pay attention past 2 minutes on a video call to people she knows and likes. I'm sure they will get a wonderful insight into her speech issues... Hmm
Don't even get me started on this.

My 3 year old is quite clearly autistic but no doctors will see him to confirm the diagnosis.
We have speech therapy over the phone (not helpful)
I had portage but thats stopped now hes 3 and that was via video call (child not interested)
The consultant appointment was due in March 2020 and was over the phone because of covid and I ring every week for an update and get nowhere.

Just want my child to be seen and diagnosed so I know what I'm dealing with!

By some sheer luck the health visitor rang me Thursday and is actually doing a home visit "only if you can confirm you are fit and well" well at the moment yes but maybe ring Thursday morning.

Feel better now I've wrote down how absolutely shit this is for all of our children!

IwanttobeMrTumble · 23/01/2021 21:53

The strangest we had today was when Dp went to the normal wood suppliers place for wood for the fire. They added €3 onto the usual price (granted not much) dp didn’t really ask why, but the guy told him it was because the wood came from an area where there were a lot of cases?! 🤷🏻‍♀️Its from in the countryside and apparently cases have gone up..but why charge more, I didn’t get it

FTEngineerM · 23/01/2021 21:53

I try to avoid it mostly because it is skewed to what the channel/show wants you to think/feel.

YANBU. Are people not bored to tears repeating that day in, day out.

Even on here (apart from the obvious covid related threads) it is thrown in to every conversation. "We were eating in a restaurant" is met with "erm we are in a lockdown you know" or no one can moan about anything anymore as we are in a GLOBAL pandemic don't ya know. Covid can fuck off, so can its cheerleaders.

FTEngineerM · 23/01/2021 21:57

It’s awful to hear of all the parents struggling with child related services, I’ve been lucky so far with DC we haven’t required any but I certainly hope we don’t either because it’s not certain the help will be there.

@firstimemamma baby’s got a cold arse.. because of covid.

OP posts:
HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 23/01/2021 21:57

Oh also my relative said I shouldn't be eating takeaway, because of Covid.

I assured them that it was contact free delivery, they then told me no wonder London cases were high, if we all have that attitude. Bonkers.

ProudAuntie76 · 23/01/2021 21:57

Tesco refusing to put a disabled shielded woman’s click and collect shop directly in her boot after previously always doing this “because of Covid”. They stood by and watched her struggle in pain for 20 minutes to the point of tears to unpack all the crates. She had to go to hospital a couple of days later as a direct result. Client of mine (I’m a nurse).

Theunamedcat · 23/01/2021 21:58

My friend couldn't get contraception because of covid no pill jab or patch available they did day however they might be able to give her partner the snip

So surgery is OK but patches? COVID!!

Sprockerdilerock · 23/01/2021 22:00

I've noticed at work when someone hasn't done something they should, the excuse is along the lines of 'its fallen by the wayside, because, well you know with everything going on...' and everyone tilts their head and 'mmmms' in a sympathetic tone.

We work in an office, I can't even work out why covid would have any bearing on not being able to update a spreadsheet but there we go Grin

How bizarre and cruel.

Many people would have picked her shopping...yet one person couldn’t load it for her?

Poppingnostopping · 23/01/2021 22:04

Spec savers wouldn't let me buy contact lenses - COVID. Even though I have a current prescription and have all my appointments at that branch. I even offered to stay at the door and pay cash or card

I think the SpecSavers all operate independently as the one I went to did my daughter's contact lenses and we spent about an hour fitting them! I felt they took good precautions and they spent a lot of time. It can be done...but not by your SpecSavers...
