Is it an announcement or a briefing?

@FourTeaFallOut

It’s a briefing.
FourTeaFallOut · 21/01/2021 13:47

Thank you

Mulhollandmagoo · 21/01/2021 13:47

@MoirasRoses

But cases are falling? Why is continually being reported that they are not? Deaths aren’t yet but they lag, still catching up on Christmas. But cases are dropping .. I cannot see why anyone thinks it isn’t working? How quickly do we expect to see it drop?! It’s been 3 weeks..
Exactly!!!! we are stuck in the middle of the Christmas fallout at the moment, so we aren't getting a true reflection of the whole situation at the moment, in a couple of weeks we will have a much more measured view of it all

I miss Piers Morgan now in the mornings.
What did he say to Ms Patel?
He tore into Matt Hancock on his voting record the other day.
Will she answer questions about the data loss?

YogaLite · 21/01/2021 13:48

Aaaah, that explains it, the Spectator bunch, google says AS is married to a political editor there.

ancientgran · 21/01/2021 13:50

@Westfacing

I might be suffering from Lockdown brain but what happened to Allegra Stratton, press officer/spokeswoman?

Maybe I missed something Hmm

Good point, I'd completely forgotten about her.
PuppyMonkey · 21/01/2021 13:50

It’s never an “announcement” when it’s at 5pm. The “announcements” are done at 7pm or 8pm in Boris’ living room, with no opportunity for questions after. And usually several hours after Peston has tweeted everything several hours earlier.

They decided to put the idea of regular general press briefings on ice when they announced the new lockdown. Thought it would be too confusing or something.

If its being headed by Priti Patel, its either about borders or enforcement.

She may be coming to do the school mistress routine and to tell us all to behave. And how many people they have fined.

But nothing new I suspect.

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'I'd be weeping into my gin if I were her after Piers Morgan tore her apart yesterday morning'

He doesn't tear anyone apart. He just makes a tit of himself on a daily basis by being the most amateurish 'interviewer' on telly. Morgan seems to think he's like Paxman or Andrew Neil when in fact his hysteria shouty style of questioning is more like something off Jezza Kyle. Susanna Reid sitting there like a nodding dog, what a pair of egotistical prats.

I wish he didn't shout so much but I have to say I watched Gavin Williamson this morning, the BBC were so unchallenging with him and I was glad Piers didn't just let him off the hook.

I'm really disillusioned with the BBC breakfast show, Newsnight and Panorama aren't the same so it isn't a BBC thing.

DaphneBridgerton · 21/01/2021 13:54

@GetOffYourHighHorse Amen to that. How bad have things got if we are praising Piers Morgan? Patting him on the back for "destroying" cabinet members and government officials as if he is some kind of beacon of truth and not a lying weasel with a disgusting track record of unethical journalism. Can you tell I don't like him very much!

tootyfruitypickle · 21/01/2021 13:55

She is the politician I actually have to turn off the telly for.

I thought she was the worst and then I saw Gavin this morning and he’s even worse - squirming out of the most basic question.

They’re such a shit pair - I cannot believe either of them were appointed in the first place let alone hanging onto their jobs.

Dont think they’d let Priti announce anything big. It’s just a filler presser.

Butterflyfluff · 21/01/2021 13:55

I don’t think Glastonbury being cancelled is necessarily another indicator that we are in this for a while yet though.

Agreed

Glastonbury is about as far away from social distancing as you can possibly get - thousands of people literally all over each other with minimal bathroom facilities

Plus it’s mainly young adults who wouldn’t be vaccinated by then either

I would have been much more surprised if they still thought it could go ahead

tootyfruitypickle · 21/01/2021 13:56

I agree the BBC breakfast interview with him was crap and let him get away with basically wasting everyone’s time for ten mins.

southeastdweller · 21/01/2021 13:56

More guilt tripping coming up in which she’ll labour yesterday’s death rate.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/01/2021 13:58

Anything important/ bad tends to be announced at 8pm.

nevernotstruggling · 21/01/2021 13:59

I think pulling Glastonbury this year is the right thing to do by the organisers. I expect it will set a precedent. Large scale gatherings this huge are not feasible in 21 in June. They just arnt.

nevernotstruggling · 21/01/2021 14:01

Anyway I thought it was PP making clear the border restrictions?

Thatwentbadly · 21/01/2021 14:03

5 o’clock ones are the regular press conferences it’s the 8 o’clock ones which are new rules/lockdowns.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 21/01/2021 14:06

Yes, I'm all for challenging ministers and someone like Andrew Neil does it coolly and intelligently. Piers Morgan is just an utter shambles I've no idea how they let him on. I know it's only breakfast telly and not a serious programme but even so. He'll give himself an ulcer all that shrieking and hysteria.

Couldn't agree more. They both drive me mad. The reason I don't watch anymore
ladyflower23 · 21/01/2021 14:15

@PortChee

Maybe the army is coming in to nail our doors shut?

I'm sure lots on here would be positively jumping with glee at the prospect to be honest!

At least it would be something exciting for me to watch through my window Wink
PilatesPeach · 21/01/2021 14:18

I am going to watch The Chase

Sparklingbrook · 21/01/2021 14:20

I am sure Piers was on GMB today grilling Gavin Williamson. But it's Thursday. Did I dream it?

Littlewhitedove2 · 21/01/2021 14:21

It’s going to take a while!! Icu abs cases are still from the Xmas holidays. Give it time for the data reporting to catch up- cases are going down!!
