Would you go abroad in May?

Assuming lockdown is lifted and flights resume would you go abroad in May for a holiday?
Or would you wait until you've been vaccinated before travelling abroad for a Holiday?
We are booked for May and have to pay a large balance soon just don't know what to do whether to re book and when for?! Or pay the balance and see if it goes ahead, but then I don't know if I would feel comfortable going away with things like they are right now and not being vaccinated.
Thoughts please?

@ineedaholidaynow

People did travel last summer but didn’t the rates go up in Setember which were partly linked to holidays. We don’t want that again. I would also hate to be patient zero being responsible for taking a new variant to a different country
Something else involving people mixing in large groups up and down the country also happened in September.
mummyof4kids · 02/02/2021 12:42

Our holiday was cancelled last year, we won't be rebooking for this year but are hopeful for next year.
It's a personal choice but for me I'd rather go without restrictions

MarshaBradyo · 02/02/2021 12:42

Holidays are less about care numbers esp if country you go to is comparable but new variants change situation. You don’t need much travel to have a big impact.

Not so much SA but a vaccine escaping variant. Even an immunised person could pick that up.

Needs surveillance which we can do

MarshaBradyo · 02/02/2021 12:43

Case numbers

ineedaholidaynow · 02/02/2021 12:44

@IcedPurple isn’t there always a time lag so School impact hit later, and the virus in school had to be initially brought in, so probably from people having been on holiday

Underhisi · 02/02/2021 12:46

I would expect the restrictions on travelling abroad this summer to be greater than they were last summer.

The virus was still circulating in Britain throughout the summer though, so it's not like it needed to be 'brought in'. Not to mention that only a small minority of people - much lower than the usual - travelled abroad this summer. Not saying it wasn't a factor, but blaming it all on foreign travel seems like scapegoating.

@AlecTrevelyan006

No - not because of concern about catching/spreading Covid but simply because it’s likely to be a complete faff and really not worth the hassle.

I’ve booked a few days in Cornwall last week of April that’s about as a risk as I’m willing to take at the moment

I don't get the point of a foreign holiday during a pandemic. The airport/quarantine side of it is a nightmare but you can maybe live with that. But you go there and spend the time having to wear masks/social distance and trying to avoid getting Covid.
wizzbangfizz · 02/02/2021 12:56

We went abroad last summer, restrictions were the same as here at the time, masks in public areas and public transport, no buffets, menus sanitised or disposable paper. It was amazing and I'm glad we went (as were the locals many of whom businesses had been decimated by decline in tourism). If we can go then we will go again May or later in the summer.

@Ilovegreentomatoes

I'd rather be realistic than a dreamer .Each to their own.
Life is realistic enough. It’s good to have some dreams. As it is, our May holiday has been cancelled by the airline, we got a full refund. Still hopeful for our August holiday ☺️
MintyMabel · 02/02/2021 13:40

Every single country had lower cases during their summer season

Before the mutations which made it far more virulent, you mean?

motherrunner · 02/02/2021 14:26

We had moved our July 2020 holiday to this July. If it isn’t cancelled we will go. Wish we had travelled last year tbh! My colleague didn’t cancel her summer holiday and had a wonderful time in Croatia. We thought masks and socially distancing would ruin the holiday but we’re used to those measures now, and as a teacher this has been the most stressful year of my career, so I want something to look forward to!

RunnerDown · 02/02/2021 14:42

If we don’t lock down our borders and folk travel abroad for their summer holidays , then this situation goes on and on. Last summer Scotland was virtually at zero COVID, and the upsurge in cases late4 in the year was mainly from European variants.
So you can have 2 weeks abroad and continued lockdown here - or stay at home but have much more open here.
Everyone is having a rubbish time but it annoys me if my summer / winter here is completely rubbish partly cos folk can’t put up with not having a holiday abroad for a couple of years.

hohohopeless · 02/02/2021 15:00

No

It's already February and we're no better off. 9 million vaccinations in the UK, but how about the other countries of Europe?

I'm not planning to travel abroad until 2022. I'd rather not get my hopes up.

schnubbins · 02/02/2021 16:20

Where is everyone going to go? Mainland Europe haven't only so far vaccinated a small percent of their population.Everything is still shut down with curfews and travel restrictions and two week quarantine upon entering in place in many countries.By the summer there will still be millions of people to be vaccinated. it will not be like last summer as there were not as many mutations and not as many cases of Covid .

Bluethrough · 02/02/2021 18:18

One in fifty people in the UK have a highly transmitted virus. This is why the virus is spreading. Stay at home. This mindset of 'holidays' in the middle of a pandemic is mind boggling

Completely agree with this. Why is so hard for people to stay at the home and support the UK tourism industry this year

Yes stay at home.......indeed :(

If its not ok to be travelling to europe and beyond, its also not ok to be travelling around the UK to go on holiday, spreading Covid to areas that have low infections but that seems to be perfectly ok for some people!

Hypocrisy.

PeachiceT · 02/02/2021 19:29

We are going to cancel our holiday in may, at the moment we would loose deposit, so waiting until the last possible moment to cancel, in the hope they might cancel first and then we wouldn't loose the deposit.

Weallfloatdownhere · 02/02/2021 20:29

Change of scene, relax, get some sun. I went abroad last August and October. Both times were a lot of fun and much-needed.

Katie517 · 02/02/2021 21:10

I would go tomorrow if I could. We are booked for June and if we are able to I’m going. I massively regret not going abroad in October so won’t be giving it a second thought this time. And for people asking why people are considering holidays, most sane normal people are sick to death of the same 4 walls and being in the UK, after working from home for 4 months, being pregnant and having a baby during a pandemic then a ruined maternity leave we need a break.

Branleuse · 03/02/2021 09:47

Theyll likely legally allow holidays over summer period whether its actually safe or not, because if they dont, its financial suicide for too many businesses. People will do the fun things theyre legally allowed to do, no matter how many people tut about it. People make their own risk asessments. Hopefully the people that do take a holiday are sensible and careful and moderate, but its no more virtuous to take a holiday in cornwall than Brittany

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/02/2021 10:06

Ryanair has just has its advert banned for telling people to book summer flights.

Hagotcha80 · 03/02/2021 10:07

Hell yes!

Booked an incredible one end of may

Full covid cover.
So nothing to lose. Everything to gain!!

PlanDeRaccordement · 03/02/2021 10:12

I would if I could and it were safe but not for a holiday but to check on my DF who lives abroad, on an island. So have to fly or else it is many trains and a ferry. He’s mid70s but quite frail but fiercely independent.

Blondiney · 03/02/2021 10:13

So nothing to lose. Everything to gain!!

I hope that statement doesn't come back to bite you on the arse.
