Would you go abroad in May?

Assuming lockdown is lifted and flights resume would you go abroad in May for a holiday?
Or would you wait until you've been vaccinated before travelling abroad for a Holiday?
We are booked for May and have to pay a large balance soon just don't know what to do whether to re book and when for?! Or pay the balance and see if it goes ahead, but then I don't know if I would feel comfortable going away with things like they are right now and not being vaccinated.
Thoughts please?

I think May is too risky. They're saying vaccination of the general population wont start til August. There could still be outbreaks here and any where else.

Nousernamesleftatall · 20/01/2021 19:00

Millions of people will be unemployed if travel is not allowed. You cannot spread what you don’t have. Cases will be low in Europe during the summer.

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 20/01/2021 19:11

I have one booked for may and thinking the same. Mines only for 4 nights so I’m more thinking will it be worth paying for the negative tests going both ways for such a short time. We went twice last year and both was amazing I’m so glad we did it! They now have a vaccine so really there is no excuse once the vulnerable have been vaccinated but I have a feeling they are not gonna give us our freedoms back so easily. It’s mad to think the whole sale of lockdown was to prepare the nhs and flatten the curve...now it seems we wants zero cases or deaths which I just dont think is realistic!

lurker101 · 20/01/2021 19:12

I would be going, but make sure you have a good travel insurance policy which includes covid cover before you pay any non-refundable money

Thismustbelove · 20/01/2021 19:12

Cases will be low in Europe during the summer.

Please do let us know where your bought your crystal ball.

Dammit. Totally stole my reply Grin

I don’t know what May will be like for travel but I wonder how we’re going to deal with new variant issue v travel in general

Randomrebel · 20/01/2021 19:19

I think May is maybe a but too early/optimistic. If your desperate to go this year I think maybe August or September might have more chance of going ahead and maybe go away in the UK in May if its allowed.

Frazzled2207 · 20/01/2021 19:20

We’re booked to fly out on hols on 31st may -rescheduled from last year. I’m not enormously hopeful tbh. Even if we can physically go I’m worried about testing to get there, testing to get back and potentially being stranded in self isolation abroad! I have young kids though. Would be far more willing to take a punt if just my dh and I.

Mangofandangoo · 20/01/2021 19:22

Like you OP we are booked to travel late May. If it doesn't go ahead I'll scream 😬

BeakyWinder · 20/01/2021 19:23

I have a wedding abroad last week of May, should have been last summer.. I'm not quite ready to book it yet and risk it again.

I went away last summer, it was lovely, buttt social distancing, masks and curfews are a bit shit in every country so I won't book another holiday until these things are lifted (I'll suck it up for the wedding if it goes ahead)

BeakyWinder · 20/01/2021 19:24

And as pp said, if we have to quarantine on return we won't be able to attend anyway.

U8myufo · 20/01/2021 19:39

Doesn’t anybody worry about picking up a variant? I just wonder, I mean I’d love to go abroad but...

unwashedzoomparticipant · 20/01/2021 19:41

you're assuming anyone will let the Brits in?!

Notmoreuodates5 · 20/01/2021 19:43

@U8myufo yes I do. But risk is every where and after the UK shit show I don’t think many places are doing as bad as us in terms of poor organisation. We can’t wait on Borris to get his act together we would never leave the house.

Pootle40 · 20/01/2021 19:47

@Nousernamesleftatall

Well then Salmon we should just stay restricted forever so because Covid is here to stay.
That and half the world will be bankrupt so we're going to have to get on with it at some point. Harsh reality.
smoothchange · 20/01/2021 19:50

How so?
My question is whether you would risk going abroad so soon after lockdown which is irrelevant of where we are going.
It's to Tenerife anyhow 🙂

You really don't know how the destination was relevant Confused

Delatron · 20/01/2021 19:51

Cases were low in Europe last summer. No guarantee but with virus seasonality and a vaccine I’m optimist! If it’s legal I’ll go. That’s my benchmark.

Nousernamesleftatall · 20/01/2021 19:51

@Thismustbelove

Cases will be low in Europe during the summer.

Please do let us know where your bought your crystal ball.

Every single country had lower cases during their summer season. All viruses have peaks and ebbs with the ebb during the summer months. You don’t need a crystal ball to read statistics.
namechangefail2020 · 20/01/2021 19:52

I have a villa booked in spain and if I'm allowed to then I'll go. Booked over a year ago for a big birthday party. I'm guessing I won't be able to but there's a slim chance we can and I'll 100% be going (maybe bot come back 😂) if I can

Delatron · 20/01/2021 19:53

We were lucky enough to go to a private villa last July. So measures didn’t impact on the enjoyment of the holiday. We ate in and the supermarkets over there seemed safer (small Spanish island).

Verite1 · 20/01/2021 19:56

We have booked to go away in May half term. Moved from last year. Need to pay balance in mid March. I need to check cancellation policies and insurance before deciding whether to pay balance or just transferring deposit to 2022 yet again.

namechangefail2020 · 20/01/2021 19:56

@DietingAgain hi, is it the airline that cancelled or tour operator? Just wondering if I'll be getting the same soon.

namechangefail2020 · 20/01/2021 19:58

@Thismustbelove Wow aren't you a delight. It's not stupidity, it's called hope! If the situation is as it is now of course most wouldn't go. But it's 4 months away and there's a chance it's a lot better then (albeit slim) so we are allowed to be hopeful. Try it!!!

kessiebird · 20/01/2021 19:59

Our summer 2020 holiday got moved to May 2021, this is to Turkey. Our December Christmas weekend got moved to mid April - this one is in our county so I hope possible if they reopen the holiday park!

Things change at such a speed I don't know if we are going to Turkey in May 2021 or not. Last June it appeared realistic that we'd get there. I'm not moving it again unless asked to. We might even take the option of a refund this time if its cancelled.

I'm insured for both holidays but it's 3k up the wall if they don't cancel and we don't go. We don't go abroad every year so a bit of a treat...
