Would you go abroad in May?

Assuming lockdown is lifted and flights resume would you go abroad in May for a holiday?
Or would you wait until you've been vaccinated before travelling abroad for a Holiday?
We are booked for May and have to pay a large balance soon just don't know what to do whether to re book and when for?! Or pay the balance and see if it goes ahead, but then I don't know if I would feel comfortable going away with things like they are right now and not being vaccinated.
Thoughts please?

No and my parents live overseas. I haven't seen them for almost 2 years. I am tentatively hoping for next summer 2022.

starfish4 · 02/02/2021 11:14

I think May is hopeful, and no I wouldn't.

rhowton · 02/02/2021 11:16

We have a holiday booked for May! Fingers crossed we can go!

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 02/02/2021 11:22

No I would dearly love a week in the sun but it's more important that cases to go down (without importing more) so that schools to reopen and stay open more.

PuffinShop · 02/02/2021 11:31

I'll be having my UK family to visit or going to visit them as soon as is logistically possible. It's not right now thanks to a combination of COVID and Brexit but I am watching and waiting hopefully and we'll be meeting up as soon as possible.

The main thing I have taken from all these restrictions is to seize the opportunities where they come.

sulee · 02/02/2021 11:35

On so many levels, no. I have close family living abroad and doubt I will see any of them until at least the end of 2021.

Branleuse · 02/02/2021 11:37

Ive booked for France for May with covid protection if it cant go ahead. We would drive though. I wouldnt fly.

My thinking was that if we drive and use tunnel, its as safe as going somewhere in UK, and if we are close to the beach, thats quite safe, and in case we cant use communal pool etc, ive booked something with a private hot tub as safer, plus if it cant go ahead, we can change the date.
Ive got my fingers crossed, but Im expecting that it will probably have to be moved

IcedPurple · 02/02/2021 11:39

If it were possible to go without a major faff, I definitely would.

That said, May is probably a bit soon. I do think holidays in Europe will b possible - although faffy - in July and August, but May is dodgy.

Spring2021 · 02/02/2021 11:47

@Notmoreuodates5 well I am CEV and my mum is 79 and neither of us have had any word about a vaccine appointment yet let alone have had the vaccine? So vaccines are maybe not being done as quickly as you are led to believe.
We received a long questionnaire from Jet2 a goodly few weeks back. Going away doesn’t sound as much fun as it would usually be especially if your going to a country with a lower vaccination rate than we have. I wouldn’t fancy going to the beach or strolling along the seafront in a mask either and I would fancy being at a crowded airport or being onboard a crowded plane surrounded by people even less. Personally, I would move to 2022 and go away somewhere spacious thats likely to be uncrowded in June or July time.

Blakes77 · 02/02/2021 11:50

I was really hoping for may but now I think it's too soon. Trying to decide between Greek island in late August or Algarve in late October. A) I'm not sure if cases will be worse and holiday more likely to be cancelled in October and B) I'm worried August will be too hot and October too cold! I also worked solidly all the way through since March. I'm knackered and I want a break. I also want the airlines and travel companies not to go bust.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 02/02/2021 11:53

Ppl who think travel will happen this year are deluded.Lets just hope for those that have booked the companies don't go bust and you can get your money back.

MilyMoo · 02/02/2021 11:55

No. I think it's unrealistic (and actually irresponsible)to book a holiday abroad this year.

MilyMoo · 02/02/2021 11:56

@Thismustbelove

One in fifty people in the UK have a highly transmitted virus. This is why the virus is spreading. Stay at home. This mindset of 'holidays' in the middle of a pandemic is mind boggling.
Completely agree with this. Why is so hard for people to stay at the home and support the UK tourism industry this year.

I went to the South of France last August, before the vaccine, why is it deluded to think we might be able to travel this year?

I’d rather be optimistic than miserable 🙃

Ilovegreentomatoes · 02/02/2021 11:59

I'd rather be realistic than a dreamer .Each to their own.

PuffinShop · 02/02/2021 12:01

For us it wouldn't be a 'holiday' per se and we'd be able to deal with reasonable quarantines. To come into Iceland, you just need to do a 5-day quarantine with a test either side. Too much hassle for a holiday but certainly doable for an extended family stay. It depends more on what the UK would require for them when re-entering and if their policy will take into account the incredibly low infection rate here (though this could potentially change of course). If it's 2 weeks in a hotel then it won't happen, but I am hopeful that there might be country-specific 'travel corridors' again or a risk colour coding system for countries or something.

It's pretty nice here at the moment, masks in shops but by no means 'everywhere', most things are open and the 14 day incidence rate is down to 5.5 per 100,000 and continuing to trend down. Most of the best things to do are outside anyway and all we really want to do is see each other.

We went to the UK as soon as the travel corridor opened in summer 2020 and my family came here just before it closed again, so we've been able to have some time together and I am honestly so pleased we did. We did all the quarantines and testing that were required and acted within the current restrictions at all times, but we took those opportunities when they came.

BeaSmithers · 02/02/2021 12:04

Absolutely!

We have a holiday booked although we are expecting it to be cancelled. But if it isn't we'll be off like a shot! I'll definitely be vaccinated by then and hopefully hubby will be too (or he'll have to stay at home on his tod 🤣).

Candyfloss99 · 02/02/2021 12:06

Go if you can be bothered isolating for 2 weeks when you get there and for 2 weeks when you return home.

PuffinShop · 02/02/2021 12:06

I also don't understand why anyone thinks it will definitely be impossible to travel in 2021, when it was quite possible for a lot of people at certain points in 2020 (depending on where you wanted to go and where you were coming from of course). Surely we think this year is going to be at least slightly better or at the very least not worse?

BeaSmithers · 02/02/2021 12:08

Wow! What an utter delight you are. My holidays for 2021 are those which were cancelled in 2020 and shifted to 2021. I'm certainly not 'deluded' BTW 🤣

And FYI, both were booked via credit card for protection if a company goes bust.

You sound green with envy at the mere thought of other people's optimism.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 02/02/2021 12:14

Trust me I'm pissed of like everyone but I feel the way things are going travel this year will not happen. My holiday got cancelled last year but didn't rebook as I didn't want to risk this year and I'm glad I didnt .In the grand scheme of things with all this going on holidays just don't seem that important at the moment.

Kokeshi123 · 02/02/2021 12:16

I'm outside the UK and longing to see my family, and I am really doubtful about summer let alone May.

Pyewhacket · 02/02/2021 12:18

No.

ineedaholidaynow · 02/02/2021 12:36

People did travel last summer but didn’t the rates go up in Setember which were partly linked to holidays. We don’t want that again. I would also hate to be patient zero being responsible for taking a new variant to a different country

Underhisi · 02/02/2021 12:39

I think anyone who does needs to expect 2 weeks quarantine when they get back
