Would you go abroad in May?

JC17fj74 · 20/01/2021 16:34

Assuming lockdown is lifted and flights resume would you go abroad in May for a holiday?
Or would you wait until you've been vaccinated before travelling abroad for a Holiday?
We are booked for May and have to pay a large balance soon just don't know what to do whether to re book and when for?! Or pay the balance and see if it goes ahead, but then I don't know if I would feel comfortable going away with things like they are right now and not being vaccinated.
Thoughts please?

I mean, my heart says yeah sure, if I had the opportunity I’d go. We’re all desperate for respite right?

But realistically, I know that going abroad any time this year is massive risk. A part of why we are in this shitstorm now is because people were flying backwards and forwards all of last summer. If you want to be straight back to where we are now, this time next year, sure go ahead.

Jessuk86 · 20/01/2021 17:38

I’m going to Marbella for my hen do in may I think it’ll be fine by then

SendHelp30 · 20/01/2021 17:39

We have booked for May. Hopefully we can go. If not, we will get a full refund.

Sootess · 20/01/2021 17:40

Think it could “very” risky to travel in May. Highly likely to need negative Covid test just before flight out and back. What happens if one of you tests positive, then what? I know if 2 people this has happened to!

I would only proceed with payment if it won’t be huge problem to lose the money

derenstar · 20/01/2021 17:41

We have a trip booked for end of May abroad, we will go if we are able to but I’m equally prepared for it not going ahead. We went abroad last summer and had an amazing time. No regrets.

OP- have you checked that you definitely need to pay the balance soon? A lot of holiday companies have changed their policies. Our package is with BA and we don’t need to pay the balance until 3 weeks before travel and can cancel for a voucher if the we can’t travel due to ongoing restrictions up-to 48hrs before.

May seems a bit early to me, wishful thinkingSad

June/July maybe,

September- god I hope so Wink

BlowDryRat · 20/01/2021 17:42

Yes, absolutely (although I'm due a vaccination next month). I've got a holiday booked for May half term (rebooked from last May) and another one at the end of July. Fingers crossed!

JustFrustrated · 20/01/2021 17:42

We booked last March to take the kids on a city break mid may. If we can fly, and don't have to quarantine...we will be going. That's to the USA.

Also, I'm booked to travel end of March (for reasons that travel is currently allowed for too) and I'll be going. That'll be travel to an Eastern European country.

daisypond · 20/01/2021 17:42

No, I think abroad in May will be out of the question.

Nousernamesleftatall · 20/01/2021 17:43

Yes. The virus is seasonal similar to flu so May should be fine and they can’t keep us locked down forever.

Newgirls · 20/01/2021 17:45

There will be plenty of availability so id bail on the booking and rebook last minute

I have booked a uk break for may which is refundable so low risk

BingBongToTheMoon · 20/01/2021 17:46

Nope!

EloraaDanan · 20/01/2021 17:47

@Nousernamesleftatall what are you fucking talking about?

Take a look, chart on excess deaths on 26th May last year.

www.health.org.uk/news-and-comment/charts-and-infographics/weekly-deaths-tracker

Not even close to flu.

BritWifeinUSA · 20/01/2021 17:47

We have booked to fly to Europe from here on May. I’m determined to go. Haven’t seen my family in over 2 years.

BarbarasStripedHands · 20/01/2021 17:47

My big worry would be what if you go, have to have a negative test before you get the plane back but have caught COVID while on holiday? What do you do? You'd have to isolate in the country according to their rules but where would you stay?

I've got a holiday booked in May also and I'm not optimistic that we'll get to go.

daisypond · 20/01/2021 17:47

I think the issue will other countries want to let us in? Not for a holiday. One of my DC went abroad in September, and the hoops she had to jump through were huge - and that was for work travel.

badgerread · 20/01/2021 17:49

We're mean to be going to New York at the end of May

This is my concern too. I asked TUI this via phone and they said they don’t know!
DietingAgain · 20/01/2021 17:50

I had a few days to Spain booked for early May and have just been notified today that it's been cancelled!

We have 2 trips booked in May (one in April as well but that is unlikely to happen)

If we can go we will:
We have both had covid
One of us has been vaccinated and the other should have been by then

ringadingringadingringading · 20/01/2021 17:53

I'm hoping to go mid June, I need this. I haven't been on holiday for years. My 4 year old has never been on a plane. I think things will lift like last year. Fingers crossed for May 🤞

EloraaDanan · 20/01/2021 17:54

“If we can go we will:

You know neither of those points mean a lot right? There’s no way of telling yet whether you have lasting immunity from having had COVID and nobody knows if you can still transmit the virus after you’ve had the vaccine. If you’ve both had your second dose by May, you will have been very lucky.

I guess it doesn’t matter though if you’re only worried about yourself.

dingledongle · 20/01/2021 17:55

I love all the folks travelling after having the vaccine!

Do realise you can still catch the virus and transmit it even after vaccination?

Blimey we are heading for a two tier society- those who have had the vaccine and will 'go back to normal'

And everyone else Angry

Why have we shielded you all for this long Sad

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 20/01/2021 17:55

I've got last years holiday booked for this July . I don't really want to go with Covid still so present . I've been in touch via email with them but I'm going to lose money either way .

DrCindyPops · 20/01/2021 17:56

@Suzi888

I messaged Thomas cook and asked if I would need to be vaccinated? and their response was ‘we don’t know’. Will I need to isolate in the country I’m travelling to? ‘We don’t know’. I’m not risking it.
Sorry to derail here but I didn't think Thomas Cook existed any more? Confused
