Would you take your elderly mum to Sainsbury's

So I'm in such a quandary about this. My DM who is 81 has had both her jabs. She hasn't been out for weeks and weeks and I do her shopping each week when I do mine. She has told me she is coming with me to Sainsbury's next week as it will then be over a week since her booster. She knows she has to wear a mask, hand sanitise and socially distance etc.

I'm still not comfortable with taking her though. I've explained that they don't know if she can still transmit the virus but this is something she desperately wants to do, just to have a little bit of normality again and to be able to do her own shopping. She was very upset when I suggested she shouldn't come.

What would you do?

once vaccinated they may still get and spread covid

as for Boris he probably needs to spell it out that they still need to SD and wear masks and sanitise.....

Who are 'they'?

Are you taking about older people in that way? You do realise they are just old and not stupid? Am sure there are as many younger/middle aged/older people who don't stick to the rules.

And so can you, who is doing your shopping?
WaxOnFeckOff · 14/01/2021 21:01

You know I used to think that i was maybe a little bit above average intelligence in this country, I now realise I completely overestimated the population.

MrsShelton · 14/01/2021 21:02

anyone vaccinated will still need to behave as if they haven't been. Masks will still be worn!

shop workers will still need to be kept safe,I wouldn't worry, restrictions won't lift just because of a vaccine.

Brilliant. The perfect example of thoughtless ageism.

Imagine if your 'they' related to black people. Or gay people. Or was said by a man about how women should behave.

Ageism is the last bastion of the 'isms' and people don't even notice or recognise it.

Handcarthell · 14/01/2021 21:14

Saraclara you do realise atm the number of elderly vaccinated are outnumbered by nhs staff and other vulnerable people?

'They' means the Vaccinated Ones

charliespie · 14/01/2021 21:15

They' means the Vaccinated Ones

You don't know that what the poster meant. Of course if they come back you have provided them with the perfect answer. We all know that poster was referring to older people.

Yep, 'cos NHS employees need to be reminded to SD, handwash and sanitise. I must remember to remind my daughter, the ward sister of a Covid ward, who got her first vaccination yesterday.
VinylDetective · 14/01/2021 21:25

Of course they will, that’s the entire point. Once all over 50s have been vaccinated, that’ll be the end of restrictions.

Handcarthell · 14/01/2021 21:25

Excellent.

Ask her to explain basic infection control and viral transmission to you.

I don't think it's changed since I was an ITU sister. But since I'm now elderly it might have

MrsShelton · 14/01/2021 21:26

the vaccination seems to be of little use as there is now talk of 'tweaking' it to combat the Brazil variant

so all 'those' who have had it....yes,mainly staff not the elderly.....will be unprotected if this variant takes hold

I think we can discount your contributions after the ridiculous “restrictions won't lift just because of a vaccine”.

To be fair, there is a new Brazilian variant which may be resistant to vaccines. Not sure why you'd discount that, as it is fact.

Not that it's here yet, hopefully the border closures will work...

charliespie · 14/01/2021 21:31

@MrsShelton

restrictions won't lift just because of a vaccine.

What the actual fuck is the point in it then?

tootyfruitypickle · 14/01/2021 21:34

It won’t be resistant , it might bring down the effectiveness. The vaccine will still work

If it's successful, and there's enough take up, of course restrictions will be lifted.

Restrictions won't lift while its being rolled out which will be most of this year.

MrsShelton · 14/01/2021 21:35

Don't discount it too soon!

charliespie · 14/01/2021 21:36

@MrsMiaWallis

I was specifically asking the poster who said it.

MrsShelton · 14/01/2021 21:37

but its ok....could only take 30-40 days to create a new vaccine to combat the new variant

so 'they' will all need it again i suppose, who knows

like i said, we can't really rely on a vaccine to lift restrictions

MrsMiaWallis · 14/01/2021 21:37

They seem very confident they can tweak the existing vaccine to protect against it.

PoppiesinOctober · 14/01/2021 21:37
God, what a fucking debbie downer.

It doesn't really work like that 😅

MrsMiaWallis · 14/01/2021 21:40

There's going to be shitloads of mutations. Scientists seem confident they can tweak things though.

tootyfruitypickle · 14/01/2021 21:42

And again, the vaccine will still work! Plenty of headroom for its efficacy to be reduced a little .
