Would you take your elderly mum to Sainsbury's

So I'm in such a quandary about this. My DM who is 81 has had both her jabs. She hasn't been out for weeks and weeks and I do her shopping each week when I do mine. She has told me she is coming with me to Sainsbury's next week as it will then be over a week since her booster. She knows she has to wear a mask, hand sanitise and socially distance etc.

I'm still not comfortable with taking her though. I've explained that they don't know if she can still transmit the virus but this is something she desperately wants to do, just to have a little bit of normality again and to be able to do her own shopping. She was very upset when I suggested she shouldn't come.

What would you do?

Aww that's a shame OP Sad

Dare I ask if you have someone to do your shopping...?

MrsMiaWallis · 14/01/2021 18:44

Get well soon OP

blueberryporridge · 14/01/2021 18:46

The guidance allows her to go shopping though. So what's your actual point here?

My point was that as she didn't NEED to go shopping (due to her daughter having been doing it for her for months already), that she might consider staying at home and letting her daughter continue to do it for the time being to reduce risk all round.

@Icequeen01 Very sorry to see that you have tested positive. Hope you recover quickly and that your family don't get it.

charliespie · 14/01/2021 18:53

She is still allowed. Whether she 'NEEDS' to or not.

HOS8595 · 14/01/2021 18:58

Yes I would take her in your position.

Get better soon.

Icequeen01 · 14/01/2021 19:00

@WaxOnFeckOff I was going to ask my mum ...... 😂

Luckily we have lots of friends who have offered to help with both ours and my mum's shopping. Even if mum could get into town (our supermarket is 12 miles away) she couldn't carry much so she's going to have to hang on in there for a bit longer!

@Icequeen01 op I'm so sorry you're unwell, I hope you have a quick recovery.
Personally yes I would take my mum shopping if I was I in your position (minus the Covid!). Like you said she hasn't done anything wrong and honestly she has just as much right to do a food shop as any of the other participants have on this thread.

MRex · 14/01/2021 19:02

Get well soon!

Icequeen01 · 14/01/2021 19:05

@saraclara My mum did make me laugh. When I rang her to tell her I had tested positive she was obviously concerned about how I was but then said "what's going to happen about our shopping? 😂

I was just thinking there might be lots of posters on this thread who might offer :o :o

Hope you aren't too unwell. i had it in March, migraine, tired, shortness of breath, sore eyes and the cough, felt fine after a few days other than being tired and the cough lasted for months but wasn't ill with it.

RetailGail · 14/01/2021 19:07

i think the next time Boris speaks to us all to lock us down further then he will maybe address this.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/01/2021 19:07

I'm imagining your mum having to scrub out the day she'd circled on the calendar and recalculate with a new D-day added. I'm sure she cares how you are but I bet she is mighty pissed off!

Icequeen01 · 14/01/2021 19:08

Thank you for all your well wishes. Not feeling too bad at the moment (bit of a cough and shivery) and hoping it doesn't get any worse. DH and DS went to get tested this afternoon but if it's this new strain sadly I think they will be positive.

Or maybe OP is in Scotland where we get a lecture every day - it's depressing as feck.

did you mean he will address the nation on not treating the more mature members of the population as if they have no agency over their own lives? I appreciate most of us are in that boat at the moment anyway though.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/01/2021 19:12

In our house, DH got a milder version and 19 year old DS had no symptoms at all.

Dauphinois · 14/01/2021 19:16

I totally would.

willowstar · 14/01/2021 19:30

Haven't read the whole.thread but...I think people need to remember that the virus is largely spread through close indoor contact in people's homes. Your mum pottering around Sainsbury's a couple of metres away wearing a mask will be doing no harm. It is also worth remembering though that the vaccine only protects serious illness, at least that is all we know so far. So, yes, it is great and I will get one as soon as I can, but we don't know yet if it protects again transmission and minor/less severe illness.

For what it is worth, I completely agree with posters supporting you to take her shopping. As an 81 year old she is more than capable of making her own risk assest.

Magic1231 · 14/01/2021 19:34

If she's had her jabs and desperately wants to get out I'd take her, you'll just have to queue separately of course xxx

Magic1231 · 14/01/2021 19:36

Oh sorry to just see you're poorly! I was replying to the original post. Sending you healing vibes ✨ xxx

Address what? People doing their own shopping?

TheKeatingFive · 14/01/2021 19:58

My point was that as she didn't NEED to go shopping (due to her daughter having been doing it for her for months already), that she might consider staying at home

There are tonnes of people who could be doing click and collect/delivery or who could get the neighbours to double up for them too. That probably includes you.

But they aren’t. So if it’s ok for all those people to go to the shops, why is it not ok for the OPs mum?

OP, I’m sorry you’re sick, I hope you get off lightly.

saraclara · 14/01/2021 20:12

Ha! If I discovered that I lived anywhere near you, I'd totally do your shopping and take your mum with me!

Icequeen01 · 14/01/2021 20:25

Thank you @saraclara 😀 xx

OP posts:
RetailGail · 14/01/2021 20:35

once vaccinated they may still get and spread covid

RetailGail · 14/01/2021 20:38

as for Boris he probably needs to spell it out that they still need to SD and wear masks and sanitise.....

and queue
