I just need to vent - elderly relative has Covid due to selfishness of others

So my elderly grandfather who is 97 and lives alone has been rushed to hospital with Covid and is now on oxygen.

Where did he get it from?

From my aunt and uncle, who provide some of his care along with my parents, and who couldn’t bear to not go on their annual Christmas holiday abroad because they are ‘special’ don’t you know and NEEDED to go. So having spent hours in germy airports and breathing recycled air on planes, they then couldnt be bothered to quarantine when they got home and instead went to visit my grandfather.

And then promptly came down with Covid.

No longer able to provide their share of care my parents did it all. No grandfather is in hospital fighting for his life and we have to wait and see if my parents have caught it from providing his care.

All because my fucking aunt and uncle thought they were more important than everyone else and that the rules didn’t apply to them. Goodness knows how many other people they have infected swanning about the community when they should have been quarantining.

Apparently they feel ‘really guilty’ now.

All they had to do to protect him was STAY AWAY. Just for 10 days would have been sufficient. They would have got the symptoms, tested positive, isolated etc but he would have been safe.

I am so sorry OP Flowers this is so awful and particularly when his death could have been avoided. No words for your Aunt and Uncle, but they certainly aren't unique in thinking their right to travel is more important than others lives.

I'm so sorry OP.

I've sadly read a lot of posts on here in the last few weeks where the OP's dear relative has passed due to Covid. But I think that this is one of the saddest story yet. Your grandfather died not by bad luck, but because someone close to him was selfish in their attitude to lockdown / quarantine. He may have been very old, but it didn't sound like he was likely to go anytime soon were it not for Covid.

I hope that people read your story and think twice about being blasé in their attitude so that it's not their grandparent next time.

I am so sorry Rino, for your grandfather and for you.

Actually sick.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I've actually fallen out with a friend because she went to Lanzarote just before Christmas as she NEEDED a holiday. They got off the plane and then NEEDED to go shopping, to 2 different supermarkets.

I just can't deal with that level of selfishness.

Oreservoir · 25/01/2021 00:05

So sorry op.
There’s no excuse for your relatives. I can’t imagine how they’ll live with themselves.

This is disgusting but sadly so common. A lot of people young and old have made these mistakes. Hope your grandfather gets through this and is healthy post recovery.

I am so sorry OP, what a terrible thing to happen, when he was still living alone at 97, and it could so easily have been avoided. There are no words for the idiocy of your aunt and uncle. Through their selfishness and stupidity they have killed this man and possibly others.
