I just need to vent - elderly relative has Covid due to selfishness of others

So my elderly grandfather who is 97 and lives alone has been rushed to hospital with Covid and is now on oxygen.

Where did he get it from?

From my aunt and uncle, who provide some of his care along with my parents, and who couldn’t bear to not go on their annual Christmas holiday abroad because they are ‘special’ don’t you know and NEEDED to go. So having spent hours in germy airports and breathing recycled air on planes, they then couldnt be bothered to quarantine when they got home and instead went to visit my grandfather.

And then promptly came down with Covid.

No longer able to provide their share of care my parents did it all. No grandfather is in hospital fighting for his life and we have to wait and see if my parents have caught it from providing his care.

All because my fucking aunt and uncle thought they were more important than everyone else and that the rules didn’t apply to them. Goodness knows how many other people they have infected swanning about the community when they should have been quarantining.

Apparently they feel ‘really guilty’ now.

All they had to do to protect him was STAY AWAY. Just for 10 days would have been sufficient. They would have got the symptoms, tested positive, isolated etc but he would have been safe.

op I am so sorry to see your update. Keep tight hold of all of your lovely memories of your gf. He sounded a lovely man from your posts. I found that comforting when my parents both passed away. I still talk out loud to them from time to time. Support from me to you in a really difficult time.

I've just read your update. I'm so sorry. What a way to go after 97 years. I'd be furious too.

ThanksThanksThanks (((hug)))

I'm so very sorry, Op. it's a terrible thing to happen.

20mum · 23/01/2021 14:54

Was it semi deliberate? Inheritance provides 'free' holidays.
What news on your mum, who was forced into danger herself?

The 'entitlement' to holidays theory is astounding. Climate Emergency, people. Pandemics, people.

So often, one wishes the entitled ones would go right ahead just as they like, but only after they have found their own personal planet

I’m so sorry to hear your update.

I am by no means suggesting this as a sensible way of thinking but I wonder if your Aunt and Uncle thought they would be ok visiting because your grandfather has had his first vacccination especially if their visit was just dropping off groceries. There has been so much misinformation about. I know that doesn’t make it right but might something like that explain their thinking? Also, I wouldn’t have travelled abroad but lots of people have.

StiffyByng1 · 23/01/2021 17:05

It’s fucking infuriating. My sister isolating because the son of the lady she cares has just had a positive result and he felt compelled to visit the day before his test result while my sister was there. I do wonder sometimes...

SummerSazz · 23/01/2021 17:15

@Rinoachicken condolences from me too. That's a cruel way to depart this world after 97 years and you have every right to be angry. Your aunt and uncle must be (rightfully & I hope so) feeling so guilty about this, so another two lives forever tainted by a selfish decision.

Big hugs 💐
