Checking in. Looking back at the beginning of the last thread we were happy because they had done a million jabs in 23 days. That was 12 days ago and they have done another million since. Yay for acceleration!

GrumpySausage · 11/01/2021 12:26

Checking in- I've deleted the mumsnet app as i cant cope with the doom and gloom but i still get email alerts every time there's a new post on these threads and i always sneak in and read them. Keeping me going :)

OrangeBananaFish · 11/01/2021 12:32

Thank you for the new thread. It's very much appreciated.

11 weeks on Friday it's good friday.

Not that I'm counting down or anything 😁

Inastatus · 11/01/2021 12:34

Hi everyone. Marking my place. I know there’ve been a few positive comments on Prof Chris Whitty’s interview this morning but just thought I’d add that when questioned about the spacing between vaccine doses he said ‘as long as the second jab is given within 12 weeks there won’t be a significant reduction in protection’.

FifeQuine · 11/01/2021 12:39

Thanks for the new thread. 🐧

FM Nicola Sturgeon just announced that 163k people have had their first dose of the virus in Scotland, about 3% of the population. Around 150k people have had positive tests in Scotland. So, more vaccinations than infections, so far. Hooray!

Blerg · 11/01/2021 13:14

That’s great going for Scotland!

Has anyone seen the vaccine update tracker thing that was due to start today?

bathsh3ba · 11/01/2021 13:19

Really encouraging and positive video from Tim Spector on YouTube too:

For those who don't have time to watch the good news nuggets are:

  • cases dropping in Wales and that the North/SW will follow
  • cases expected to peak in London in about a week
  • we should see hospitalisations come down in a couple of weeks
  • UK doing really well at vaccination
  • he thinks we could come out of lockdown earlier than expected
FuzzyPuffling · 11/01/2021 13:21

Excellent stuff from Tim Spector, all that is really good news. (Sadly, in our area all we hear is "cases up" but we do tend to be behind large conurbations)

Thanks for the new thread Smile

That good news from Tim Spector is so encouraging, thanks for posting bathsh3ba.

BolloxtoGender · 11/01/2021 13:25

2.4 million first dose 💉 vaccinations in the U.K. Sky News says.

beachdays123 · 11/01/2021 13:30

That Tim Spector video is actually from a week ago, and he's right - the ZOE app is showing rates in London and nationally dropping now over the last few days... Smile

Shellingbynight · 11/01/2021 13:42

Someone on the previous thread mentioned they'd like to hear more of what Chris Whitty said this morning - the full interview is here, I just watched it (it's about 20 minutes). Scroll through, it starts at 7.30am.

(And thank you all for the positivity on this thread.)

Peggyslantern · 11/01/2021 13:47

Very happy to be on a new thread (I dipped in and out the last under a different name)

I am determined not to fall into a spin of dreadful anxiety over the next few weeks. Today I did some work early then had a hilarious half hour learning to dance with Oti Mabuse on Facebook. She's doing 3 classes a week and even though it was on Zoom I genuinely forgot about the virus for a bit. She's such a lovely person. It's free so please join if that's your thing. It really got my day off to a good start. I am far too fluffy at the moment. I need to be fitter by the time we get to spring. Crashing around my living room to music is definitely going go to help.

MarcelineMissouri · 11/01/2021 13:48

Hi all, just checking in to mark my spot on this thread!! We’re nearly half way through January which is statistically (based on my own statistics) the worst month of the year even without a pandemic! So if we can get through this month we can get through anything!

FourTeaFallOut · 11/01/2021 13:49

I think, from the way Boris gave those figures, it sounds like 400k of the 2.4 million have had their second dose?

I'm going to button my lip on that one as it's the good news thread.

MarcelineMissouri · 11/01/2021 13:53

That’s how I read it as well @FourTeaFallOut but to be honest I still think it’s good news!! That’s 400,000 completely vaccinated which is fab. And I imagine the number of second doses given will fall now for a few weeks anyway as I think a lot of those were given on the basis that people had already been told they’d get it in 3 weeks. As far as I’m concerned it’s all capacity and it shows how many we can do - the bumps around 2nd doses will work themselves out quickly now I’m sure.

JemimaPyjamas · 11/01/2021 13:56

Placemarking here too on the doom avoidance thread! Earlier was having a text chat with a friend who was complaining and being so negative (no mass vaccination centre on our doorstep, how it’s not that good anyway as can still transmit, how nuts I was to book travel for August.) I don’t think I am being naive, but I do genuinely feel as if things will improve and improve fast. I am also desperate for more positive info on the transmission side as the countries we are both booked to go to currently require quarantine. I’m thinking the vaccine, and tourism dependency, side will mean this has changed by August.
Has anyone else booked anything?

MarcelineMissouri · 11/01/2021 13:57

@JemimaPyjamas we’ve booked to go to Florida in October... 🙏🏻🙏🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

BumbleNova · 11/01/2021 14:01

Ah I need this thread! I was in despair this morning thinking it would never end. Yippee for vaccinations and falling infection rates.

France May half term, rearranged from last year. So the french had better up their vaccination game!
JemimaPyjamas · 11/01/2021 14:07

I’m delighted it’s not just us!!

JemimaPyjamas · 11/01/2021 14:12

We are going to Cambodia, via Thailand. Both places haven’t even started vaccinations yet but should due within a few months. Thailand requires two weeks quarantine and Cambodia requires tests and various deposits but it should have loosened up by August. I go from optimistic to feelings of doom though!

We're still hoping to see Pete Tong in a field near us in mid June. (Oddly, I wrote "mud June"...could be right!)

And in some ways, I don't mind if it's postponed, it's just the idea that it might, it could happen that matters.

I haven’t booked anything but a group I am part of has been asked to tender for some events in August. There’s also another place where I do activities which is optimistically planning some events at Easter. My guess is that even if the latter happens it will still have to be outdoors but hey we can wrap up warm! Just having a possibility of something to look forward to is so lovely.
