So, Boris, Whitty and I think Vallance are doing a press briefing at 5 pm today.
Hope he's ready for some difficult questions!

GabsAlot · 05/01/2021 17:50

queenofthelamas · 05/01/2021 17:50

@LoudTree this was not said....

AcornAutumn · 05/01/2021 17:50

@SnailortheWhale

Anyone else getting a bit bored of *@LoudTree* ‘hilariously’ trolling every thread with tales of doom. It’s dangerously nasty when so many peoples mental health is on the brink. Do you not realise that your trolling could actually tip someone over the edge to suicide? How does that make you feel, you utter piece of shit. Reporting all your posts from here.
I think that's her plan

I nearly topped myself in March, good thing I wasn't on MN then!

@MarshaBradyo

LoudTree does this on every thread they post on
Well they can fuck right off because that comment has finished me off. Now crying in front of the kids. Thanks.

12 weeks of BBC educational shows suggests it will be longer
Bagamoyo1 · 05/01/2021 17:51

@LoudTree

Great to hear Chris Whitty being honest about the fact that life has changed permanently. Lockdown will be back next winter and there will be permanent restrictions in place to save lives.

I’m afraid everyone will need to accept that there will be no more large gatherings, no more popping for coffee with a friend and no more Christmas meals with family.

It will be a case of everyone staying at hike to save lives with possibly a few restrictions eased each summer. Such as possibly being able to meet one other household in a garden.

I read this post and thought blimey, then I saw it was posted by loudtree, and I understood.
MarshaBradyo · 05/01/2021 17:51

Bickertown Sad

Carlislemumof4 · 05/01/2021 17:51

@HipTightOnions

Did he just say “schools are safe”?
Have you considered they are trying to get the message out that if the unions, some teachers and parents won't consider full school reopening until it's fully 'safe', some children could still be out of the classroom next Christmas.
AaronPurr · 05/01/2021 17:52

@GabsAlot

I think it's looking unlikely that it will just be 6 weeks. Sad
wellgood · 05/01/2021 17:52

@Bickertown sorry you are feeling this way. There's something wrong with that poster. That is NOT what was said and not what will happen.

52andblue · 05/01/2021 17:52

not trying to scare anyone else, sorry, just saying how I feel.
(I don't think this'll be forever, or that Whitty meant that but now its bad)

Rosehip10 · 05/01/2021 17:53

@LoudTree Oh grow up - and troll off.

itsgettingweird · 05/01/2021 17:53

Gosh the joints annoy me with their stupid statements.

Last one:

Some families cannot afford access to internet.

So true and I hope their dingoes are provided soon.

Their children are having to access school via smartphones.

If you have a smart phone you are paying a monthly fee.

They are laying over £100 a day for data.

Seriously? Your telling me where a family is so low income and has a smart phone they aren't paying for unlimited data or a cheap WiFi but are paying £2300 a month instead for data Hmm

What's a real shame is an excellent point that needs addressing NOW as they failed to address it properly last March about data is being presented so unrealistically.

Children NEED access to education whatever way they can receive it and it is best for those who don't need to be in school to be at home.

Why not ask if children who have no access to remote learning can be given priory passes to libraries, have in school learning. Can they access empty offices to log on?

Grrrrrrrr. There is so much more useful stuff they could ask which would give the government a clue to how to deal with this.

As an aside loved Whitty again this evening. He's so clear and informative and you get what we're doing and why and how well come through it.

FlibbertyGiblets · 05/01/2021 17:54

Acorn me again.
I queried 1 in 50 people infected with corona virus, thought had misheard the figure, but no. So that is why 1 in 50 is being bandied about. My fault, sorry!

MagicSummer · 05/01/2021 17:54

What actually is wrong with the word 'alas'? I use it and I think you will find that anyone with a wide vocabulary (i.e. well-educated) will use it too.

I see, thank you.

It's because people keep using it when they mean "man, I am LOVING this".
GabsAlot · 05/01/2021 17:57

oh dear thanks @AaronPurr

itsgettingweird · 05/01/2021 17:58

Loud tree that's not quite what he said - bless!

He pointed out that summer would be better but likely a few restrictions may need to be put in place during next winter. That's because we saw what happened this summer. I don't think people realised winter would again be like this. He's being honest that it won't be as bad but it won't all be plain sailing straight away.
He pointed out that flu has never gone away and we have a vaccine programme and there is a socially accepted number of deaths to disease. We will reach that with covid and people will continue to die of it yearly. It won't ever go away completely.

Alas, it's one of the words that he uses a lot.

It makes for a great Boris drinking game.

Boris may be well educated if you class going to Eton under that umbrella.

But it's widely reported he isn't particularly academic.

wanderings · 05/01/2021 18:00

@MagicSummer Alas, Saint Boris overuses the word “alas”. Once a year, maybe might be acceptable, but alas, three times a minute is too much, alas. Alas, ‘tis a word that’s better placed in drama and literature, not when you’re trying to sugar-coat the extremely unwelcome message of “alas, I am ruining your lives for some greater good, which alas, my puppet masters are making me talk about”.

AnxiousAlpaca · 05/01/2021 18:01

I missed the announcement. Can I just have a hand hold please? I’m alone and having a panic attack I think. I work in a college and having to work from home nearly broke me last time Sad I have bipolar and I don’t think I can do this again. I know if I think sensibly that what @LoudTree is saying can’t possibly be true but I can feel myself spiralling now
