Did Boris actually just do that?

So did Boris emphasise on TV at the weekend that's schools were safe, then pressure parents and staff to attend school today only to lock everyone down from tonight abs shut schools as part of it? Send everyone in to mingle for a pointless day. Wtaf.

Is this leadership? I am struggling to think of how he could be more indecisive and incompetent.

Is there a means through which a PM can be removed?

@BabyLlamaZen

I'm not a fan, but you saw the uproar last time. Children (our future economy) suffer a lot when not at school. But they also can't be in school. It's constant juggling and the man cannot win.
While its true he can't really win, its impressive that he manages to lose so spectacularly.

But he is right. Schools were perfectly safe on Saturday morning (because they were empty).
Today they have filled up, and (he actually said this!), they act as vectors of transmission between households! So he had to close them, obviously!

This really made me laugh. Or, it would have done, but for the fact that the millions of children and teachers who did what he asked, and mingled in schools with no PPE today have now spread this deadly disease further. Hundreds, if not thousands of people will literally die because of his dithering.

He really needs to resign now.

Chloemol · 04/01/2021 21:56

Yawn

Useruseruserusee · 04/01/2021 21:56

@52andblue

What astonished me is that he actually highlighted it - said that the reason kids had gone back for 1 day is that the Govt valued every single day of education. He couldn't give a stuff about our kids.
That was the bit that got me raging too. As a parent and as a teacher, I can honestly say he doesn’t give a shit about education.

If he did the first thing he would do would be appoint a competent education secretary.

ancientgran · 04/01/2021 21:56

So in roughtly six hours we went from schools being safe, teachers at no more risk than anyone else to closing schools?

LegArmpits · 04/01/2021 21:56

It's embarrassing. A flock of honking geese flew over my house at about 8.30pm, they were like fuck this 😂

LauristonPlace · 04/01/2021 22:03

DfE told schools earlier today

No, as an LA senior officer, I was in my daily DfE virtual meeting at 16.30 today - no word.

I'm a long way from being a Tory, but he can't win whatever he does. I really really wouldn't want to be Prime Minister right now.
LauristonPlace · 04/01/2021 22:05

In fact at 18.30, I was still supporting HT's to plan staffing and pupil attendance around section 44 for tomorrow.

NorbertMeubles · 04/01/2021 22:05

Theylove the bumbling idiot in another thread I'm on. Seems if you don't like how he's handled this then you're not understanding it's a pandemic. I highly recommend the other thread for a look at the Boris loving fans...

yetanothernamitynamechange · 04/01/2021 22:09

To be fair though Boris Johnson did make it absolutely clear he didnt think it necessary to close the schools again. So it should have been obvious to anyone really that he was about to do exactly that.

But hundreds and thousands of people are not dying, stop being so dramatics.

The death rate isn't even above the peak from the first lockdown.

Its been said by the scientists time n time ago this strain is more infectious but not necessarily as deadly.

Perhaps if people could also have sacrificed meeting for Xmas to help stop the spread we might not have to go into this lockdown

kurtrussellsbeard · 04/01/2021 22:10

@IfTheSockFits he really can. He can listen to science and act decisively and appropriately.

Fizzydrinks123 · 04/01/2021 22:10

@ancientgran - yes that is what happened - this morning's meetings amongst healthcare agencies etc - it has been found that the expected figures have been overshot and doesn't align with prior modelling ..

I know no-one wants to hear that and just carrying on letting off steam, but that's what's happening.

MrsTravers · 04/01/2021 22:12

I think it's a shame that the secondary testing won't go ahead. Not that I was particularly thrilled about the test part of it for my first eldest but at least it might have given some indication of the role of schools in all this.

It's an utter mess. And I do agree with PP regarding all the people who have been shouting for a lockdown, I hope they are satisfied. Need to get back to work now and decide whether or not I can continue to do so beyond this month.

DuchessofDerbyshire · 04/01/2021 22:14
**@Fizzydrinks123* I'm in healthcare - it's the new variant which has significantly changed planning - staff are tested every week so inevitably even those with no symptoms are then having to isolate.*

It is spreading much more quickly and plans have changed accordingly.

Are you seriously saying that between him being on tv at about 9.15 and this afternoon when they announced he was going to do the announcement tonight the whole situation changed so drastically?
Seriously?
Possibly.

It's obvious that they were looking at the impact of Christmas because they needed to allow 10 days to see transmission and numbers.

Lockdown was the LAST thing anyone wanted.

You only need look at posts here to see how people are breaking the rules as they cannot cope with Tier 4!

He doesn't act alone.
The posts here suggest he makes all the decisions. He's the front man.

Behind him are loads of civil servants, especially those working for Rishi who wants to keep the economy going, scientists who can't even agree with each other (so it's pointless quoting them as experts as they argue amongst each other....) and of course, the unions on the other side.

He can't win. If he acts too soon people complain, if he acts after taking everything into account, he's blamed for dithering.

Maye you need to read what is written instead of just making up stuff as you go along? Are you Boris on a bike?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/01/2021 22:16

Maybe the queen could call "orf with his head"?

Remmy123 · 04/01/2021 22:16

Boris closed due to pressure of what everyone else was saying. He didnt want to do it.

Rates are so high now but that's not just due to schools as they have had half term. That's due to people mixing over Christmas etc.

Wheresthebeach · 04/01/2021 22:16

It's just a fucking mess. The same mistakes time and again.

I utterly despair at the incompetence, and the price we are all paying for it.

MrsRockAndRoll · 04/01/2021 22:17

It is insanity & sheer incompetence that BoJo & Hancock were saying only this morning on love interviews that schools were safe.

The announcements should have been yesterday - at least NS got parliament opened today for her announcement.

Like many parents I'm totally stressed out trying to sort childcare for the foreseeable future

DuchessofDerbyshire · 04/01/2021 22:17

I think some posters need to think about what's happened over the months.

Now, everyone is saying 'listen to the scientists'.

Yet- only a few months back- people were accusing those very people of exaggerating the figures, producing flawed data to suit their own agenda, and no one wanted to listen to them!

I've been shocked at how on this site so many people boasted about breaking the rules and thinking they didn't apply to them.

People pass on Covid. Not the government.

kurtrussellsbeard · 04/01/2021 22:18

@DuchessofDerbyshire I can only assume that you aren't on Twitter or any other social media where scientists and doctors and other experts have been saying this was needed for weeks. That you haven't seen the articles shared from the Lancet and other peer reviewed publications. That you didn't look to your closest neighbour who said before Christmas that schools wouldn't be opening back up until at least the 18th.

I'm genuinely so sick of people excusing his inexcusable behaviour. It's what he is relying on.

His job isn't to please the crowd..... IF he acts too soon, we have lower infections and hospitalisations.
We ve known this from the very early days of the pandemic, Johnson is better than he was but still late to the party.

kurtrussellsbeard · 04/01/2021 22:19

Absolutely his job isn't to please anyone. At this point in time his job is just to save as many lives as possible.
