Did Boris actually just do that?

So did Boris emphasise on TV at the weekend that's schools were safe, then pressure parents and staff to attend school today only to lock everyone down from tonight abs shut schools as part of it? Send everyone in to mingle for a pointless day. Wtaf.

Is this leadership? I am struggling to think of how he could be more indecisive and incompetent.

Is there a means through which a PM can be removed?

Dddccc, while I agree with most of your points, the government is to blame for an understaffed NHS. They've had decades to sort that one out.

Dddccc · 05/01/2021 00:58

Yes but the staff shortage is not down to just boris it been down to ever leader in the last 20 years or more

Yes. And the conservatives have been in government since 2010. They've had ages to sort that part out.

Nor is it 100% his fault either

NHS leaders have blamed medical staff agencies, for charging high hourly rates to provide locum doctors and nursing to short staffed hospitals at short notice. They say that if their Trusts did not have to pay such exceptionally high costs, they could afford to recruit more staff as a long term solution. The government has recently introduced a cap on fees that agencies can charge, which previously saw junior agency doctors earning more than full time NHS Consultants, and this is hoped to alleviate some of the financial pressure placed on Trusts. But critics have said that poor management and planning within Trusts leads to the need for agency staff, and the cost of agency workers should not be used as a veil to cover the real problem.

@MrsPernicious

Not only did he do it, he did it at 12-40
I’m not going to spend time backing up his delays in stuff, but I don’t think that’s what the time reads on his watch.
HeadIsFucked · 05/01/2021 05:15
@BabyLlamaZen I would be more sympathetic if he hadn't been saying the polar opposite only one day ago. Even earlier today eh was talking vaguely about the future. Several sources (scientists, SAGE, independent SAGE etc) saying that schools would have to close yet he powered on. I don't know if his announcement was as a result of Sturgeon's but he absolutely has never looked weaker as a PP has said.

I'm actually flabbergasted at what he's putting people through.
Yes, this is what annoyed me about xmas tbh. I mean, the possibiliy is there that it was only discovered that the september strain was taking over when it was announced. But it seems too convenient timing. After saying Starmer was trying to steal xmas, boo baddy, saying everything would be as planned, yadayada, then turning round as soon as parliament closes, again pretty last minute for the 200th U-turn that month.

Its not the decisions I am angry with. But the way it all happens. Along with the blatantly obvious floating ideas in the press ('leaked' though, of course) then going with popular options. Thats not the way to run a country..surely?!

I have taken to listening to what he says he is not going to do, as you can almost guarantee at this stage that if he says that, a week or so later it will be the opposite. No confidence in him at all.

blueangel19 · 05/01/2021 06:27

all Lottapianos How do you feel about Sadiq Khan?

ouchmyfeet · 05/01/2021 06:52

He sent 3 million kids back post Christmas to mingle and share germs for one day THEN shut the schools. Honestly a lot of the time I still can't actually believe that he's the PM Confused

joystir59 · 05/01/2021 06:58

Perhaps children will have to be left home alone? Teach them to be responsible and know what to do in an emergency, not answer the door to anyone, not use the cooker etc. That's better than adults not earning the money needed for the family to survive and keep the roof over their heads.

Chel098 · 05/01/2021 06:58

@Suzi888

Don’t key workers still get childcare places? DH and I can access childcare if needed.
They are not put in place today though! NO KW places are available today so parents can go to work! I should have started a new job this morning!
Chel098 · 05/01/2021 07:00

@joystir59 great idea. Confused

Yes that’s for my school. I don’t know about the other schools for today.
AethelsWhiteGoose · 05/01/2021 07:34

Our school also completely shut today including for key worker children. We were open yesterday though!

1forAll74 · 05/01/2021 07:43

Well Boris isn't acting alone in all these decisions,he cant just decide things as though he is the sole rule maker about all things, like some kind of nasty dictator. But he. and all his so called experts and advisors, should have got to grips about the lockdown, and the school closures much much sooner,as it was plainly obvious that the spread of this virus was getting out of hand now.

He is just a figure head. and has to speak to the public, in some kind of calm, but serious manner, despite knowing, that everything is a muddled , and right mess up now.

BluebellsGreenbells · 05/01/2021 07:53

Maybe the schools have decided on a deep clean?
Maybe the teachers need time to access those able to work and those shielding

Maybe they need time to get resources together for mixed age groups

Maybe they need to grasp the online learning set by specialist GCSE teachers etc

midnightstar66 · 05/01/2021 07:56

@1forAll74 but it would have been his job to arrange the meetings - to bring them forward - as it was clear the situation was escalating and that leaving it til Monday when a huge cohort of kids and staff were already in school with potentially catastrophic consequences. NS summoned her cabinet and advisories on a Sunday and again yesterday on the bank holiday Monday while Boris no doubt enjoyed his weekend.

Plus Sturgeon has, I imagine, no better advisors than he does yet she extended the Christmas holidays because she understood the situation was getting worse and she understands giving the public last minute decisions weakens trust in the government. So even though both Scotland and England are now in lockdown Scottish parents and teachers have a few weeks to arrange childcare and online learning etc, where as in England they had about 12 hours notice.

LittleMimi · 05/01/2021 08:16

Regarding the ppe where ther hell was he ment to order it from it was being used quicker then being made

In the summer when stocks of PPE were many times what had already been used in the year the government was still paying overinflated prices for it, which was just unnecessary. There was no urgency for it then and stocks were high. Plus they gave multi-million contracts to companies which had just formed and had no experience in delivering it.

jasjas1973 · 05/01/2021 08:31

Of course you would have done better than our PM...you clearly have the benefit of hindsight

Yet Germany with far less per capita cases and hospitalisations introduced a lockdown 3 weeks before Xmas.
France did similar.
so despite have a a more contagious virus, we opened up, had a 5 days of xmas special.

We close golf courses but keep garden centres open ....

jasjas1973 · 05/01/2021 08:38

Regarding the ppe where ther hell was he ment to order it from it was being used quicker then being made

The Tories ran down stocks, didn't take on the lessons of exercise cygnus.
Late to the party to re order, ordered the wrong stuff, gave contracts to non PPE suppliers, didn't take up offers from traditional PPE suppliers.

Where would all the extra NHS staff come from and they cant fill the nightingale hospitals full of covid patients as there is no staff

True, so why waste billions building them.... or was it just for PR ?

The Cons have failed to rectify the staffing shortages within the NHS, they removed the nurse bursary and have never lifted the cape on Dr training places.
Now with our exit from the EU, its far harder to fill these staff shortages, indeed eu staff have left the NHS.

They've been in power for 10 years.
