Did Boris actually just do that?

So did Boris emphasise on TV at the weekend that's schools were safe, then pressure parents and staff to attend school today only to lock everyone down from tonight abs shut schools as part of it? Send everyone in to mingle for a pointless day. Wtaf.

Is this leadership? I am struggling to think of how he could be more indecisive and incompetent.

Is there a means through which a PM can be removed?

MrsPernicious Not true. Schools didn’t know and the DfE don’t issue letters- they come from the governing bodies.

theliverpoolone · 04/01/2021 21:42

And schools have just spent two weeks putting testing systems in place, and finding people to administer them - what a waste of time and resources that's been.

BluebellsGreenbells · 04/01/2021 21:43

This has been on the cards a while. I’m surprised you didn’t see it coming.

It’s obvious the party follow popular opinion on sites like this. You called for a lockdown with schools closed and it happened.

lexi873 · 04/01/2021 21:43

The time on his watch was just after 8pm which is the time it was broadcast cos it was a live speech Confused

jasjas1973 · 04/01/2021 21:43

@BabyLlamaZen

I'm not a fan, but you saw the uproar last time. Children (our future economy) suffer a lot when not at school. But they also can't be in school. It's constant juggling and the man cannot win.
His job isn't to win or be popular, its to do the best for the country and its people. He is a salesman and entertainer.
AnyFucker · 04/01/2021 21:44

Yes, he certainly did

He has been gaslighting the fuck out of all of us for months

I feel very angry and very helpless right now

HibernatingTill2030 · 04/01/2021 21:44

@Remmy123

Oh stop moaning .. you got what you wanted , a full lockdown and schools shut. Mumsnetters must be whooping with glee abd 'I told you so's'!!
It's not what I wanted. It is what we needed from a public health perspective. I take no pleasure in being locked down again.
Elephant4 · 04/01/2021 21:45

He needs to go. His absolute incompetence makes him dangerous.

This, this and this.

MrsPernicious · 04/01/2021 21:45

@VladimirCutiePutiPie DfE informed DHs school today to issue letters, so they did.
DfE gave the instruction, school did the action.

Ladydowntheroad · 04/01/2021 21:45

@kurtrussellsbeard

Not sure if you mean he'd willingly give it up or I'm being uppity to suggest he's wrong but either way I genuinely think I would do a better job and I'm completely average and uninspiring in every way! 😀

Tbh OP I already find your username far more inspiring than anything that’s ever come out of the PM’s mouth, or face for that matter.
sally067 · 04/01/2021 21:46

This is what happens when you elect a single issue party/government.

I remember when Ukip were fairly popular as a protest vote 10-15 years ago and a few towns elected them to run their councils. They had no clue how to actually do anything; bins weren't collected, planning applications never got heard, etc.

Unfortunately the country has elected what is essentially a protest party government with no one of any competence anywhere in sight.

Barbie222 · 04/01/2021 21:46

DfE told schools earlier today

No they didn't.

ancientgran · 04/01/2021 21:46

God only knows what the actual teachers themselves are feeling like. Presumably they've got this evening to come up with a suite of lessons and resources for 9am tomorrow. I bet the secondary schools that haven't had kids in today have wasted the day preparing for the tests that now won't be needed. Or will they be testing the keyworkers kids?

RubyViolet · 04/01/2021 21:47

Tier 10 by Easter !!

52andblue · 04/01/2021 21:47

What astonished me is that he actually highlighted it -
said that the reason kids had gone back for 1 day is that the Govt valued every single day of education. He couldn't give a stuff about our kids.

TwoCupsOfLemonTea · 04/01/2021 21:48

@Snowpatrolling

Like a pp I’m a key worker and single parent. How the hell am I supposed to magic up childcare less than 12 hours before school!? I had to reduce my hours last time which put me in rent arrears. I’m still fighting to get out of it. I can’t do it again. So pissed off right now.

Surely you're entitled to a keyworker place at school?

Yep. All of SLT and site staff have been sorting testing all day. Luckily we knew we were remote this week so that's not a surprise - shame we don't know what the fuck is going on with exams, but hey... I only have 2 year 11 and 1 y13 class to teach.
Tiletiletile1 · 04/01/2021 21:49

The government are such an embarrassment.

kurtrussellsbeard · 04/01/2021 21:50

@TwoCupsOfLemonTea she will be but schools are open 9-4 at best. Most keyworkers, especiallly those in the NHS don't work these hours

OP posts:
heartmoonshadow · 04/01/2021 21:51

Yes Keyworkers kids can go to school. Last lockdown our school used a hub 20 miles away and charged 10 an hour plus 3 daily for snacks for wraparound care so it cost me 165 a week for DD to go to school. I was late daily as I work 10 miles in other direction of home it was a nightmare my childcare bill was 4x normal child minder who lives close and is more flexible plus my fuel consumption skyrocketed. Lucky me! Furlough would have been preferable as I would have been better off.

School made everything difficult not looking forward to handing over all that extra cash to go to work grr

Whatamesssss · 04/01/2021 21:51

@ParkheadParadise

LangClegsInSpace

Yes, he actually did that.

I hate him worse than Thatcher

Boris is an arsehole, she was an evil bastard.

But she was a competent Evil Bastard. She got the job done. (I am no fan of hers either).
viques · 04/01/2021 21:51

@LangClegsInSpace

Is there a means through which a PM can be removed?

I believe if enough tories decide he's crap they can have a vote of no confidence and get rid of him. They'd replace him with another tory though and would be under no obligation to call an election.

I think if they have a vote of no confidence he would have to go, but let’s face it, even the desperate to be PM Gove isn’t stupid enough to want to take the job in the middle of a pandemic and the aftermath of Brexit. We are stuck with him, for the time being.
DianaT1969 · 04/01/2021 21:53

Do we think there are two Boris? Twins. One goes out saying random shit on media and the other has no idea what he is up to and the cabinet shout at him before press briefings to get out there and clean up the message.

HibernatingTill2030 · 04/01/2021 21:53

They can get rid, I suppose, but the other options are equally grim.
And I can guarantee nobody in their right mind would want the job right now. So we'd end up with somebody not at all in their right mind.

ancientgran · 04/01/2021 21:54

@Fizzydrinks123 I'm in healthcare - it's the new variant which has significantly changed planning - staff are tested every week so inevitably even those with no symptoms are then having to isolate.

It is spreading much more quickly and plans have changed accordingly.

Are you seriously saying that between him being on tv at about 9.15 and this afternoon when they announced he was going to do the announcement tonight the whole situation changed so drastically?
Seriously?
