To say if they bring in the "only one hour a day outside" guidance I am NOT going to follow it

There are rumours on the BBC news that the Government might bring back rules saying you can only exercise outside for an hour a day.

AIBU to ignore it if they do? I followed it last time despite the fact that it was only in guidance (rather than the law) even though it had a negative impact on me and there is an incredibly low chance of the virus being transmitted outside, especially if you keep away from people.

Bringing this rule back whilst schools stay open seems especially ridiculous.

There was never a rule for max 1 hour a day outside.

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2021 21:44

I don't remember a 1 hour outside rule, where was this? How did they police it?

getwhatyougive · 03/01/2021 21:44

This was never a rule.

Didn’t it come off the back of someone on tv saying a 5k walk might mean you’re out for about an hour. This was then taken to mean you could only be out for an hour Hmm

satnighttakeaway · 03/01/2021 21:44

It wasn't even guidance last time, you could exercise for as long as you liked.

MichelleScarn · 03/01/2021 21:45

Definitely not! And currently having disagreement on another thread with someone who wants all outside time banned, unless it falls into their threshold of essential..Hmm

FoxyTheFox · 03/01/2021 21:45

There was never a rule that said you could go outside for only an hour. The rule was that you could take exercise outdoors within a reasonable distance of your home and peoples interpretation of that - aided by a load of waffle from BoJo and Gove - to mean you could go out for one walk lasting an hour.

RNBrie · 03/01/2021 21:45

It was never a rule!! It was given as an example in an interview and somehow seemed to stick. The rule was that you were allowed out for exercise once a day but there was never a time limit on it.

MabelFurball · 03/01/2021 21:46

What on earth do you need longer than an hour outside every day for anyway - especially in this weather.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 03/01/2021 21:46

That rule never existed. Exercise was allowed to last as long as you liked.

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2021 21:46

Well I don't fancy a one hour walk while the pavements are sheet ice and in minus temperatures. Hope the hour isn't compulsory. Grin

FoxyTheFox · 03/01/2021 21:46

We had a fine old Spring/Summer and were outdoors for most of every day, 12k down to the far end of the beach and back was our usual.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/01/2021 21:46

Yanbu to not follow rule which doesn't exist.

Yabu to not read rules properly when they have effect on your life

Just because you don't like the outdoors doesn't mean everyone is the same. I live rurally and often go for long runs or bike rides, whatever the weather.
Notimeforaname · 03/01/2021 21:47

It definitely was the case in Ireland. 1 hour per day back in the first lockdown. If that happens again I will not adhere and go out when I please. Will still stay distant, wear a mask etc. But no I wont be staying in like a prisoner with my one hour to run around the yard Hmm

CaptainSandy · 03/01/2021 21:48

Because it takes longer than an hour to do a decent bike ride or hillwalk.

Ihaveoflate · 03/01/2021 21:48

I have a toddler and I can tell you that we definitely need more than an hour outside - in whatever weather!

megletthesecond · 03/01/2021 21:49

I don't think it would come to that. People in flats would be stuffed. An hour of activity and daylight isn't enough.
I have to do two lots of exercise, one with each dc.

I was out walking for 2 hours today. We could easily walk for longer and often do - without getting close to anyone.

I am guessing some people have temperatures not in minus figures. Brrrr.
workingfortheclampdown · 03/01/2021 21:49

@Notimeforaname No, it wasn't! Unless you mean NI - down here I remember being grateful we at least had no limits on how much time we could spend on outside within our puny 2k limit.

Brighterthansunflowers · 03/01/2021 21:50

It was never a rule or even guidance

YABU for winding up hysteria over something that was never a rule before and isn’t now

BogRollBOGOF · 03/01/2021 21:50

The rule was only on MN.
And being part of the "crisps on a bench brigade" was very strongly scorned upon.
I like stopping to eat crisps on a bench when I am running for 2+ hours. It's a great recharge of salts and quick release starch Grin

I will not abide by any restriction on exercise. A hundred metres and I'm off road and 600m and I'm off into quiet countryside. Long runs avoided far more people than keeping local so was far more sensible, kept me sane and made up a bit for the loss of all the incidental walking that made me otherwise totally sedentary.

Dixiechickonhols · 03/01/2021 21:50

It was never a rule in England.

LawnFever · 03/01/2021 21:51

To chime in with everyone else that was never a rule, and where on the BBC does it say this, seeing as it was never true in the first place?

Did ‘someone say it on Twitter’? Anybody can say anything online, as is obvious from this thread

satnighttakeaway · 03/01/2021 21:51

Not everyone is you, you must know that there are people who enjoy being outside, exercising, getting fresh air, walking their dogs or whatever. Normal people go outdoors all year round
