To say if they bring in the "only one hour a day outside" guidance I am NOT going to follow it

There are rumours on the BBC news that the Government might bring back rules saying you can only exercise outside for an hour a day.

AIBU to ignore it if they do? I followed it last time despite the fact that it was only in guidance (rather than the law) even though it had a negative impact on me and there is an incredibly low chance of the virus being transmitted outside, especially if you keep away from people.

Bringing this rule back whilst schools stay open seems especially ridiculous.

Why are you worrying about something that hasn't happened yet? I can understand being prepared for uncertainties but this seems like you're looking for something to be upset about.

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 03/01/2021 22:13

One hour exercise was never a law/rule/guidance. As a pp said it was Gove suggested what he thought was reasonable

The fact it was never a rule hasn’t stopped some idiot journalist at the BBC who is clearly incapable of research (despite being the Science Editor) saying they may bring the rule back

^But clues about such measures to tackle the new more infectious variant come from the government's Sage advisory committee.
The headline is that whether we see a return to the "one-hour rule" for outdoor exercise, or stricter controls on travel around the country, we'll be hearing a lot more about something already very familiar: hand hygiene, social distancing, wearing masks and ensuring there is fresh air.^

AndcalloffChristmas · 03/01/2021 22:14

There was never such a rule as many have said. I’m not sure how it would be enforced or even what good it would do. You aren’t going to spread it going for an outdoor walk (or run or whatever), not unless you try really hard to.

Bloody italics fail!

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2021 22:14
@Sparklingbrook nesh is Yorkshire for someone who feels the cold easily. It isn't an insult particularly, just an observation.
Felt like an insult. I don't actually 'feel the cold' as such except when it drops to minus figures any exertion hurts my chest. I have no idea why but my Dad is the same. It's weird.

Nesh is an English dialect adjective meaning 'unusually susceptible to cold weather' and there is no synonym for this use. ... The word comes from Old English hnesce meaning feeble, weak, or infirm and is a cognate with the 16th century Dutch word nesch typically meaning damp or foolish

AlwaysLatte · 03/01/2021 22:15

Why don't you wait and see what the rules will be before you decide what you're not going to follow? Might be a pointless argument.

ktp100 · 03/01/2021 22:15

This is another reason why schools need to close for a few weeks, in my opinion.

While they stay open the general feeling is that things can't be that bad when in actuality things are pretty bloody grim at the moment!

Littleposh · 03/01/2021 22:15

Are you in UK??

Love51 · 03/01/2021 22:16

Walk some children?
Walk yourself?

I've been on loads of walks the past week. I'm in tier 3, so I'm allowed to see people, but it isn't "sit on a bench" weather so we walk.
I'm starting to realise that some people don't need as much exercise as I do and can have pyjama days and not leave the house. I get mardy if I don't exercise!

DianaT1969 · 03/01/2021 22:17

Gosh, they were dark days. March and April. I was afraid to go to the park because it wasn't established if it could be transmitted easily outside. Every passing, puffing jogger was a terrifying threat 🤣.
I stuck to a 30 minute loop of the most boring streets and stepped off pavements if I met anyone. Dreadful times!

matronyoshka · 03/01/2021 22:18

I'm with you, @EndemicPanda. Whilst I know during the first lockdown the 1 hour rule wasn't actually a rule, enough of my neighbours and friends seemed to believe it was that I followed it, as I'm a very non-confrontational person. Not a chance this time around - I'll exercise and be outdoors as much as I want to. I work from home and haven't seen anybody apart from my husband and parents in almost a year (my office in Westminster sent most of us to work from home last February). My goodwill towards this government is gone.

chomalungma · 03/01/2021 22:19

Remember Derbyshire police 'shaming people' on Twitter for daring to walk in the Peaks.

And benches being taped over so no one could sit down.

IfTheSockFits · 03/01/2021 22:19

This afternoon it was close to freezing with diagonal sleet bordering on hail. Not the sort of weather I yearn for to be honest.

RaspberryCoulis · 03/01/2021 22:20

We were out for at least 2 hours this afternoon. Me, DS, DH. Geocaching. Walked about 4 miles but with lots of pauses for hunting for caches, writing on logs and logging finds.

Yes it was cold and yes it was icy. But it was dry and bright and if you have a warm jacket and keep moving, it's fine.

CoffeeandCroissant · 03/01/2021 22:21

@MabelFurball

What on earth do you need longer than an hour outside every day for anyway - especially in this weather.
A long walk, as long as you wrap up warm and keep moving it's fine and good for your physical and mental health. You would be surprised how warm you get walking up a steep hill, even on a very cold day, plus in crisp, cold weather the clear views are great.
Ylvamoon · 03/01/2021 22:22

I don't care, luckily I can walk or cycle to work. Then I can go out to walk the dogs and after that I can go jogging/ cycling for exercise!
Seriously, the rule was go out once a day for exercise... more important in cities and build up areas than the outskirts of shabby town where I am living. We have a massive industrial estate that was deserted during lockdown #1 in walking distance. I could spend hours there without coming close to other people.

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2021 22:23

Well if anyone wants my hour just let me know. Grin

Cherrysoup · 03/01/2021 22:23

Fake news. Don’t spread mis-information. And who the buggery will spy on you then arse themselves to report you? Dear me.

chomalungma · 03/01/2021 22:23

Except when it's raining heavily.

And muddy.

But today, the heavy mud was fine because it was frozen as it was so cold. Grin

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 03/01/2021 22:23

Back in March you couldn't sit on a bench or grass in case the covid went up your arse, I wonder if that rule will come back

AcornAutumn · 03/01/2021 22:24

@EndemicPanda

As mentioned in the OP I stuck to an hour once a day when there was the lockdown earlier in the year despite it only being in guidance rather than law (and I would add I agree it was a spin on the official guidance by Gove etc).

But my point is I am sick of this now, my goodwill has gone and I'm not sticking to any guidance that doesn't make sense. It's especially ridiculous to keep schools open but restrict my ability to go outside to local rural/semi-rural areas. I am done.

I'm baffled why you followed it at all, you knew it wasn't law and you still followed it?

As for the bafflement at being out for an hour in this weather, it would take me longer than that if I had basic errands to run. We don't all drive, shocker.
.

FoxyTheFox · 03/01/2021 22:24

I sometimes do the 2 mile walk to town, buy stuff like milk and bread, then walk the two miles home. Whole trip takes about 75mins. Would this be 'banned'?

Yes. Get your affairs in order and prepare to be burned at the stake as a witch.

chomalungma · 03/01/2021 22:25

@TheAlphaandtheOmega

I think you could kick a football on the grass but not sunbathe on the grass.

For some reason.

Almostslimjim · 03/01/2021 22:25

There was never a rule for max 1 hour a day outside.

This. It's impossible to bring back a rule that never existed in the first place.

Tumbleweed101 · 03/01/2021 22:26

My average walk is about 2 hours with the dog, sometimes longer, especially when I'm not in a hurry to get home. We're very rural and rarely see more than one or two people when we go out so any restrictions on time outside would be pointless in our area. The only restriction I agree with in a lockdown situation is about how far you can drive to start your exercise. Ten minutes to a local beauty spot is a bit different to a three hour journey to one.
