To say if they bring in the "only one hour a day outside" guidance I am NOT going to follow it

There are rumours on the BBC news that the Government might bring back rules saying you can only exercise outside for an hour a day.

AIBU to ignore it if they do? I followed it last time despite the fact that it was only in guidance (rather than the law) even though it had a negative impact on me and there is an incredibly low chance of the virus being transmitted outside, especially if you keep away from people.

Bringing this rule back whilst schools stay open seems especially ridiculous.

I didn’t adhere last time and most certainly will not again. Go fuck yourself.

I am in Scotland and strictly complying with of having anyone in the house, though. We also aren’t meant to travel and also complying. They make sense. Sadly infections still rising here

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 03/01/2021 22:26

@Love51

Walk some children? Walk yourself?

I've been on loads of walks the past week. I'm in tier 3, so I'm allowed to see people, but it isn't "sit on a bench" weather so we walk.
I'm starting to realise that some people don't need as much exercise as I do and can have pyjama days and not leave the house. I get mardy if I don't exercise!

It's alien to me too!

I personally find it odd that some people want to spend all day indoors just because it's a bit parky out. But I wouldn't advocate in favour of rules forcing them to spend all day outside, on the basis that I think it's normal to go outdoors and why do they need to be indoors anyway?

chomalungma · 03/01/2021 22:26

@Almostslimjim

There was never a rule for max 1 hour a day outside.

This. It's impossible to bring back a rule that never existed in the first place.

Just tell people that it was an EU rule. Then they will believe it existed
Quaagars · 03/01/2021 22:27

@chomalungma

Remember Derbyshire police 'shaming people' on Twitter for daring to walk in the Peaks.

And benches being taped over so no one could sit down.

How is that the same though, that's not the "one hour rule" people are saying was a thing when it wasn't? People driving for miles to go for a walk and all cramming onto beauty spots, totally different and can see why they were policing that more.
KaleJuicer · 03/01/2021 22:27

As noted above there was never a rule but it’s important to note there was never even guidance limiting it to an hour. I used to go out several times a day (for an express purpose like exercise or to go food shopping. Not randomly standing on street corners). I read both the law and the guidance and was confident it was fine (I’m a lawyer and reading statutes, regulations and policy guidance is my job). I thought the rules were pretty lax compared to family overseas who were limited to a geographical area very near their home which in effect limited how many times they went out and what they could do.

RedskyAtnight · 03/01/2021 22:28

There isn't much to do in Tier 4 other than go for long walks. Even if it is cold.

Still not illegal back then - and the police shouldn't have been policing things that aren't illegal.

The Peaks also aren't too far from big cities.

movingonup20 · 03/01/2021 22:30

I was never a rule! They said once per day for exercise but never specified the length

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 03/01/2021 22:30

With the Derbyshire police thing.... Some of the locations they filmed people at were very close to Sheffield. I imagine the vast majority were probably people who lived in the city and decided to drive 15 mins (the Peak District is literally next to Sheffield) to walk somewhere where it would be easier to distance.

Fingfoxes · 03/01/2021 22:31

It came from Gove on a TV interview when he was asked what was reasonable time limit for exercise. Obviously he should have prepped better for that interview because a limit on exercise is total BS.

The walk I do that I rarely see another soul takes 1.5 hours (circular so can't be shortened). The alternative is to walk around the streets near my house and pass about 250 people on crowded pavements.

Any intelligent person can see the first longer walk is far safer than the second option.

MrsMiaWallis · 03/01/2021 22:31

I spent almost all day outside last time and will do so again. I have no neighbours and horses to look after

Yohoheaveho · 03/01/2021 22:32

If you have a nice big garden you're not allowed to go out at all if you live in a flat go as much as you want
That should be the rule

Don't be ridiculous.
I say this as someone with a very small garden (not even really a garden, more of an outdoor space)

Why? This is bonkers. Hardly anyone (basically just the super rich / royals) has a garden big enough to actually go for a run.

Do people really think that walking up and down a garden will give sufficient exercise for the average adult?

Grandtheft · 03/01/2021 22:35

What on earth do you need longer than an hour outside every day for anyway - especially in this weather.

I often run all day, stick that in yer pipe and smoke it sugarlips Wink

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 03/01/2021 22:35

If people do think that, it's a depressing insight into the level of physical fitness they think is normal.

I'd love to only spend an hour outside tbh! I was outside for 4 hours today and I was freezing

I live in a village where everyone has a garden or yard, even the handful of flats here are all "tyneside flats" and have gardens or yards with upstairs generally have the front one and upstairs having the back. Should the entire village not go out?

Tavannach · 03/01/2021 22:37

Michael Gove just made it up so that he could seem competent and well-informed when Andrew Marr asked him. It was never a rule.
I had my annual check-up in a phone consultation with a respiratory nurse in April. She was delighted when I told her I was walking 5 miles at least 3 times a week. That takes me 2 and a half hours. "Use it or lose it", she said. Boredom played a part tbh.

MrsMiaWallis · 03/01/2021 22:37

@Thewiseoneincognito

Oh OP you silly woman. Of course you’ll ignore it, of course you will. I bet you bought one of those lanyards off amazon as well so you can cough all over Tesco.

What an idiot. I feel sorry for your DC being cursed with such an abomination of a mother.

Shock

The things people say on here!

ZenNudist · 03/01/2021 22:38

Friends in the police say its unpoliceable. It doesn't make a difference anyway.
