To say if they bring in the "only one hour a day outside" guidance I am NOT going to follow it

There are rumours on the BBC news that the Government might bring back rules saying you can only exercise outside for an hour a day.

AIBU to ignore it if they do? I followed it last time despite the fact that it was only in guidance (rather than the law) even though it had a negative impact on me and there is an incredibly low chance of the virus being transmitted outside, especially if you keep away from people.

Bringing this rule back whilst schools stay open seems especially ridiculous.

Not unreasonable. People with dogs, especially working dogs (like me) i.e. spaniels, labradors, collies etc, will by necessity need to walk their pets for more than an hour a day.

Why should someone without a pet not have the same luxury?

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2021 21:52

Yes I'm in Dublin. It was 1 hour per day for exercise and only 2km from your house that was in place for a little while.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 03/01/2021 21:53

@MabelFurball

What on earth do you need longer than an hour outside every day for anyway - especially in this weather.
I am a runner and I also have kids to walk outside with. If I had to choose, obviously I'd take the kids out. Then I would never get to run. Not happening
ASimpleLobsterHat · 03/01/2021 21:54

The rule was you were allowed out for exercise. There was never any limit on how often or for how long.

EndemicPanda · 03/01/2021 21:55

I took my toddler for a long walk in the woods for a couple of hours this morning and then went for a long run myself this afternoon during his nap time (DH kept an eye on him).

TBH if they bring in an "only once a day" outdoor exercise rule I'm ignoring that too.

My dog (working breed) had a 2,5 hour walk off lead yesterday and two separate one hour walks today. He runs constantly and honestly doesn’t care about the weather, one hour really isn’t enough for him even if I throw in games and scent work at home.

CakeRequired · 03/01/2021 21:55

Wasn't there a rule about going out only once a day for exercise? No time limit on it though. Maybe that's what op is thinking of?

Hueandcry · 03/01/2021 21:55

Temperatures are below zero here but I'm still outside every day & I won't be adhering to an hour a day. I did it last time & it was hell so this time I'm not doing it

Runkle · 03/01/2021 21:56

You're making an issue out of nothing. It never existed. It's impossible to police. You do you. End.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/01/2021 21:56

I am guessing some people have temperatures not in minus figures. Brrrr.
Definitely below freezing and thick ice underfoot on my walk today. And yesterday and the day before.

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2021 21:56

This is an interesting read-

The 'guidance' back in March was exercise once a day.

Turns out the person who said 1 hour a day was Michael Gove.
The same person who had to backtrack on advice to separated families

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/29/keep-walks-hour-virus-lockdown-warns-michael-gove/

Michael Gove has warned the public to limit daily walks to a maximum of an hour ahead of a tightening of rules on the national lockdown, saying joggers should limit their runs to 30

www.thesun.co.uk/news/11284289/daily-walk-or-run-maximum-one-hour-coronavirus/

Police forces said there has been "some confusion" about how long it was acceptable to go out for each day.

Emergency laws passed last week say Brits are allowed to go out for exercise, but it does not specify how long that should be.

Andrew Marr asked Mr Gove: "We know you’re only allowed to go out once to take a piece of daily exercise, is there any suggestion about how long you should be out for?"

And he replied: "Well, obviously it depends on each individual’s fitness, but I would have thought that for most people a walk of up to an hour
or a run of 30 minutes or a cycle ride, depending on their level of fitness is appropriate."

Did ‘someone say it on Twitter’? Anybody can say anything online, as is obvious from this thread

Yup. Came here to say this

Makes my chest hurt and I worry about breaking a limb as the pavements have been sheet ice. But each to their own I guess.
wanderings · 03/01/2021 21:58

THERE NEVER WAS A ONE-HOUR RULE in England. Gaslighting by the government, and the BBC, as usual. Here it is, if you can bear to look at Saint's Boris's mug: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-55521747

They're saying all this shit to make it look as if they're doing something: they're that desperate. They know it can't be enforced: even the police didn't know they would be enforcing mask-wearing until Boris told the public this.

Incidentally, I think social distancing is not law - merely a polite request.

yellowmaoampinball · 03/01/2021 21:58

You're getting yourself wound up about something that hasn't happened yet. Chill.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 03/01/2021 21:58

I am guessing some people have temperatures not in minus figures. Brrrr.

We've had snow on the ground for several days, and temps haven't really risen above freezing here in the last week. Not all of us are nesh!

Being out in the snow in winter is fantastic.

Recycledblonde · 03/01/2021 21:59

I think it was when Gove was put on the spot and asked what was a reasonable amount of exercise and he facilitated and said “about an hour I suppose” It then went down as holy writ.😆

LadyCatStark · 03/01/2021 21:59

Right now, I don’t want to be outside for more than an hour, it’s freezing!

hillarypcof · 03/01/2021 21:59

Despite PPs, I am fairly confident this was a rule back in the very beginning of the first lockdown we had in March. I remember this, OP.
I hope we don't - I thought one of the reasons they scrapped it was due to mental health - and that front certainly hasn't changed! Fingers crossed it doesn't get brought back

chomalungma · 03/01/2021 21:59

And Marr did have that wrong as there was nothing in the LAW about how often / how far you could exercise.

I remember taking part in a lot of threads quoting the law.

I have explained but it makes my chest hurt (although I have no issues) and I can't risk breaking any limbs. Don't know what 'nesh' means. Confused

Thimbleberries · 03/01/2021 22:00

I think it was a rule in wales. And advised by Gove et al in England, but not actually a rule.

And the BBC was talking about "a return to the one-hour rule", so someone there thinks it used to be a rule even if it wasn't.
