To say if they bring in the "only one hour a day outside" guidance I am NOT going to follow it

There are rumours on the BBC news that the Government might bring back rules saying you can only exercise outside for an hour a day.

AIBU to ignore it if they do? I followed it last time despite the fact that it was only in guidance (rather than the law) even though it had a negative impact on me and there is an incredibly low chance of the virus being transmitted outside, especially if you keep away from people.

Bringing this rule back whilst schools stay open seems especially ridiculous.

Fake news.

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/01/2021 22:02

It was only going out to exercise once per day but no time limit last time. I went out twice, or sometimes even thrice, each day with the dog. We saw lots of other people out at the same times as us and managed to restrain ourselves from running over and licking them so successfully avoided catching covid or anything else that might have infected us from within 2m.

I will be doing the same again if similar measures are reinstated.

My across-the-street neighbour seemed to enjoy our outings immensely, judging by the avid rubbernecking she was doing at her window.

@hillarypcof

Despite PPs, I am fairly confident this was a rule back in the very beginning of the first lockdown we had in March. I remember this, OP. I hope we don't - I thought one of the reasons they scrapped it was due to mental health - and that front certainly hasn't changed! Fingers crossed it doesn't get brought back
No, as severel posters have pointed out it was a misunderstanding of something Michael Gove said in an inteview that somehow became an urban myth

It was never a rule

Honestly, you are wrong. It was never a rule or even guidance. Lots of people thought it was, but it wasn't.
TillysMum02 · 03/01/2021 22:02

OOOOOH get you op,ignoting this and won't do that, you rebel you!!!

Hmm
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/01/2021 22:03

I sometimes do the 2 mile walk to town, buy stuff like milk and bread, then walk the two miles home. Whole trip takes about 75mins.
Would this be 'banned'?

ChaToilLeam · 03/01/2021 22:03

It was never a rule, never a law, but seemed to bring out the curtain twitchers in droves. I need my daily walks and an hour isn’t enough in any weather, so I’ll be taking the time I need, and that isn’t breaking any regulation.

chomalungma · 03/01/2021 22:03

It doesn't help when the Prime Minister doesn't know the law.

That is why people will only be allowed to leave their home for the following very limited purposes:

shopping for basic necessities, as infrequently as possible
one form of exercise a day - for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household;
any medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person; and
travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home.

www.gov.uk/government/speeches/pm-address-to-the-nation-on-coronavirus-23-march-2020

Because that was not the law.

Bobkitten · 03/01/2021 22:03

In Wales in April, you could only leave the house once per day for exercise, and being out for ‘several hours’ was not advised. Cyclists were told that they had to cycle within reasonable walking distance of home.

lljkk · 03/01/2021 22:04

There were a lot of rules locally enforced even though not written into the legislation.

Govt made HUGE fuss in mid-May 2020 press conference when they said we could go out as many times & as far as we liked. Local police forces interpretted the rules to mean only once a day & no driving allowed. Someone shouted at us on a bike ride (about 5 miles from my home) "Only one hour!" Plenty of people, not just MNers, believed this was the allowed limit.

fireplaceburning · 03/01/2021 22:06

@MabelFurball we were out for well over an hour today walking! The dogs need a decent walk so had 20 mins this morning and 90 this afternoon. I imagine many are the same

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 03/01/2021 22:06

sparklingbrook I have no issue with someone not wanting to go out in winter themselves. But I object when people assume that their preferences apply to everyone else, and that only people living in warmer areas could possibly want to exercise outdoors in winter.

Not everyone is like you.

Quaagars · 03/01/2021 22:07

@penpox

There was never a rule for max 1 hour a day outside.
This. You were allowed to go out for exercise, it was never strictly one hour though! How on earth would they have policed that?!
RedskyAtnight · 03/01/2021 22:08

This would be impossible to police. Stopping the "you can meet one other person outside" would be easier to police and probably have more effect, since people exercising on their own or with their household tend not to be a huge risk.

I imagine lots of people might like to exercise twice a day e.g. dog walkers, and those who take children out once and exercise once themselves.

CardoMondo · 03/01/2021 22:08

Well my dog needs two walks a day for at least an hour each so that’s what she’ll be getting.

MorrisZapp · 03/01/2021 22:08

It's like people on Big Brother saying they were 'up for nomination' instead of up for eviction. Absolutely infuriating! :)

Not everyone is like you either. I don't know what you are getting at TBH. I would think it would be easier for people to only go out for an hour when the weather is so cold, but as this isn't a rule it really doesn't matter does it?
OverByYer · 03/01/2021 22:09

I’m in Wales, that was never a rule. Jog on.

EndemicPanda · 03/01/2021 22:09

As mentioned in the OP I stuck to an hour once a day when there was the lockdown earlier in the year despite it only being in guidance rather than law (and I would add I agree it was a spin on the official guidance by Gove etc).

But my point is I am sick of this now, my goodwill has gone and I'm not sticking to any guidance that doesn't make sense. It's especially ridiculous to keep schools open but restrict my ability to go outside to local rural/semi-rural areas. I am done.

That's a bit dangerous isn't it?

RaspberryCoulis · 03/01/2021 22:10

@penpox

There was never a rule for max 1 hour a day outside.
That was never a rule, or a law. It was a misguided comment by I think Michael Gove.

It was however leapt on by the over-zealous on MN who advocate never leaving the house, ever. Someone I volunteer with at a charity shop was telling me that someone in her street was literally standing at their window with a stop watch, timing how long people were out for.

Absolutely nuts.

And no, I wouldn't stick to it either. Here in Scotland we're not supposed to be leaving our county council area and I'm not sticking to that.

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 03/01/2021 22:10

DH regularly goes on 20 mile walks and doesn't care if the weathers bad or cold, he dresses for it, not everyone just goes for a plod up the road and back

UsernameSaved · 03/01/2021 22:11

@MabelFurball

What on earth do you need longer than an hour outside every day for anyway - especially in this weather.
Walk a dog?
Love51 · 03/01/2021 22:11

@Sparklingbrook nesh is Yorkshire for someone who feels the cold easily. It isn't an insult particularly, just an observation.

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 03/01/2021 22:12

It was definitely Gove , I remember watching it on the TV, it was just his opinion though of how long he thought exercise should be
