As MNHQ are looking in to the other poster on this topic I am starting a new thread for this discussion. They will be able to see I’m a long term poster so no reason to delete.

Yes the article is still available from other sources. But it’s incredibly worrying that the Telegraph has felt it necessary to remove the article from their site. It was posted at 7pm and removed shortly after midnight.

@DominaShantotto

Erm... no scaremongering here, just interested in hearing as much information as I can.
And unless you know something I don’t I’m definitely not a man!!

Thanks, OP - I'm really interested in this.
OK well given we would know by now if the new variant was causing any difference to disease severity (rather than prevalence), we simply have the observation that it is more infectious. Which we've known about for a few weeks now. So what new? The imperial quotes specifically outline all the many caveats to the data. All it tells us is there appear to be more transmissions in under 19s. The reason for this may be because everything other than schools was shut. What it just doesn't suggest is any increase in severity in those age groups, and posting hosptial admission stats for kids proves nothing unless we're seeing huge absolute increases in admissions over the five year average. Which we're not. What the hell is the point of all the fear and panic?? Read this guy on twitter, actual scientist who is looking at facts, not jumping on the latest hot take. twitter.com/BallouxFrancois?s=09
Yes- this.
Neil Ferguson has not said that the new variant is more infectious in children. He has been very clear. It's not enough to just post a link to a paper....you have to read it and check it's saying what you think it is saying!

Whether we should shut schools until we have proper answers and to get a jump on vaccinations is another question.

This “wards are now full of children” thing is based from a quote from ONE PERSON!!!! One Union member. One Matron from one hospital.
It’s now regurgitated all over this platform with no data backup
It’s appalling.

schoolsarenotsafe · 02/01/2021 09:20

It is all over twitter too.

MushMonster · 02/01/2021 09:21

I wonder why they do not delete threads where people just say one after another that they are meeting indoors, giving false phone numbers in pubs and restaurants, and so on....
Those do affect me, and make me anxious!

Several posters have put up links and data of hospital admissions. Numbers are actually low, at least so far.
That is re-assuring, but I will keep an eye on that data.
Thanks to this I now know where to find it.
Regarding the nurse, I do not think she would lie or even exaggerate. That must be her experience.

The Telegraph is always the government’s leak vehicle of choice. Presumably one of their liaisons told them to pull it, and the editor obeyed.
SpikySara · 02/01/2021 21:01

Interestingly the news is now reporting a rebuttal of the comments made by matron Laura Duffell last night. Paediatrician Dr Ronny Cheung has said her comments about wards full of children with Covid are untrue and irresponsible. I guess removing the article wasn’t enough to hush it up. I don’t know who to believe now.

Aprilrainbow · 02/01/2021 21:07

I guess that MN pulled it because it was fake news.

SpikySara · 02/01/2021 21:21

The Telegraph withdrew it, not MN. It would have been better to print a retraction with an explanation imo. Because by pulling the article they just generated a lot of concern about censorship.

Wakeupin2022 · 02/01/2021 21:22

What do you want to talk about?

This variant is more transmissible in children - I think that is fact backed up by data?

There is no reason to believe this variant is more serious in children- well that seems to be backed up by Sage, Paediatricians etc

Everything else is scaremongering........

Topsyandtimison37 · 02/01/2021 21:23

Coronavirus: No increase in severe child cases, paediatricians say www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55518248

Wakeupin2022 · 02/01/2021 21:24

It was irresponsible of the BBC & Telegraph to publish this. They should have done some fact checking 1st.

Its absolutely right that fake news and misinformation should be pulled & MN are also correct to delete misinformation.
