As MNHQ are looking in to the other poster on this topic I am starting a new thread for this discussion. They will be able to see I’m a long term poster so no reason to delete.

OP posts:
BendyLikeBeckham · 01/01/2021 22:22

very interesting. We need to know this stuff. Why are the MMM not reporting it?

BendyLikeBeckham · 01/01/2021 22:23

MSM that was meant to read.

Remmy123 · 01/01/2021 22:23

It's getting shut down because it's not true and scaremongering.

If it was true ALL schools wouid shut, without question.

TillysMum02 · 01/01/2021 22:23

Hq say we can discuss

TramaDollface · 01/01/2021 22:24

It’s the trigger happy volunteers tonight

Or Gavin ...?

covetingthepreciousthings · 01/01/2021 22:24

How do you know it's not true?

The telegraph and radio 5 may have fact checked it since the matron in question gave her name and her workplace has also been named in an article too..

TillysMum02 · 01/01/2021 22:25

@Remmy123

They are starting to shut all schools.....this is now worrying.... I just looked and our local MP is asking government to close ours too.

[quote Oxonschools]The BMJ think that the new variant is more efficient than the original at infecting children:

Are children more susceptible to the new variant?
Yes, in comparison with the non-variant virus. Speaking at a press briefing, Neil Ferguson, director of the Medical Research Council’s Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis at Imperial College London and NERVTAG member, said that during the November lockdown in England there was a “general shift in the distribution of the virus towards children—for both the variant and the non-variant [virus].” This was expected, because of schools remaining open during the lockdown, he said, and among those aged under 15 there were slightly more cases of the variant virus in the community than the non-variant, though not significantly so.

But Barclay, who also sits on NERVTAG, said, “Let’s be clear. We’re not saying that this is a virus that specifically attacks children or is any more specific in its ability to infect children. But we know that SARS-CoV-2, as it emerged, was not as efficient at infecting children as it was adults. There are many hypotheses [as to why], but one is the expression of the ACE2 receptor that could be different in children. So if the [new variant] virus is having an easier time of finding and entering the cells, then that would put children on a more level playing field, if you like.”

Following to see whether thread survives...but while I'm here, if you read this quote from the BMJ neither scientist is actually saying that there is any evidence yet that this variant infects children more readily.

I was thinking that something like this could happen when I learnt the vaccines are not approved for children yet.
It is almost like pushing the virus towards the younger part of the population, and schools, as they are indeed close to each other for hours.
Boris still says schools are safe.
I am starting to get worried about this.

Funkypickle · 01/01/2021 22:27

Mn need to calm down and let discussion actually happen. This is appalling. Not saying either way in what I belive to be the case re: this article and covid in kids.

Discussion will help provide a balance by allowing posters to post their view points. What's the point in a discussion form if one is not allowed to post, read, research, question or ponder said issue?

@MUMSNET what's the issue? How have these threads infringed on talk by laws?

Also, please take pity on me and don't ban me. I've had one too many very mumsnetty champagnes and yes I did use use the 'one' card.

covetingthepreciousthings · 01/01/2021 22:27

I just looked and our local MP is asking government to close ours too.

Which area is this? Is it a tier 4?

Fortherosesjoni70 · 01/01/2021 22:28

I cant find the telegraph article anymore. Can someone link?

KeysDontBelongInTheFridge · 01/01/2021 22:29

@TillysMum02 Where did you find that information out? Have no idea how I’d go about knowing what my local MP is thinking about in regards to Covid.

Ohbabybab · 01/01/2021 22:29

@MNHQ I can see a message has been deleted on here so wondering if you are able to answer my question? As you can see from my posting history I’m not an antagonistic poster and have no interest in bun fights but I’d really like to know why we can’t discuss information being shared via The Telegraph and Radio 5 Live from a health professional who has given her real name and location? As a parent I’d like to be able to discuss the situation in the round. I understand some may be concerned but if we don’t have the ability to discuss it surely that causes more concern?

OP posts:
Funkypickle · 01/01/2021 22:30

Pardon me forum...

KeysDontBelongInTheFridge · 01/01/2021 22:30

I find it a tad worrying as they originally said Covid was nothing to worry about and only took action when it was too late. Argh!

Sickofthiscrapp · 01/01/2021 22:30

I’m near London in tier 4 but schools are open.
Just received an email from my child’s school that they are open on Monday.
I’m scared to send her in.
I’m CEV.
If I keep her home, will they fine me??

EagleFlight · 01/01/2021 22:31

Is there somewhere specific you can look to see what MPs are asking in regards to this?

covetingthepreciousthings · 01/01/2021 22:31

I cant find the telegraph article

Presume I'm allowed to post a link to this since it's main stream news..

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/01/01/covid-wards-full-children-first-time-pandemic-warn-nurses/

Fortherosesjoni70 · 01/01/2021 22:31

IMO Keep her off.
Whats a fine compared to your health and hers?

Speak to the school and explain your concerns esp if you are CEV.
covetingthepreciousthings · 01/01/2021 22:33

After reading other threads about this is seems unlikely. The fine is £60 per parent, and remains that unless you don't pay within I think 28 days. But like I say, it seems fairly unlikely. I'd say schools will all shut before you'd get fined..

MushMonster · 01/01/2021 22:33

Yes, I am guilty of underestimating this virus. I thought it would just be in the news, like SARS or the swine and bird flu. Never to affect my boring life because I was not travelling anywhere.
Few months later.....

IloveJKRowling · 01/01/2021 22:33

Hearsay is allowed in pretty much all other threads. So why not here?

On the schools threads, it was all anecdata from teachers etc. They were proved right (again and again and again).

When you're in the middle of a rapidly evolving pandemic, listening to all sources seems reasonable (whilst obviously giving greater weight to peer reviewed science, say, but that takes months and months to appear).

It seems to me that if the new variant infects children in greater numbers then more children will be badly affected - it's a numbers game - even if the disease is no more inherently harmful. The more people infected the more will get very ill in absolute terms (even if the proportion stays the same) - that's why we have so many in hospital now.

But I am confused because there have been reports that the new variant may give rise to higher viral load and it's been well established that higher viral load leads to more severe disease. www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(20)30354-4/fulltext

My best guess at the moment is that basically we don't know enough about the new variant to know the answers to the many questions yet (whether it's more or less harmful to any age group, whether social distancing and masks still work as well as before etc etc).

Personally, given we seem to be operating without much knowledge I'm inclined to be precautionary when it comes to my children.
