In town going from shop to shop or when the street is busy, yes. Walking home from town last week because it kept my face nice and warm in the bitter wind? Yes.

A country stroll with nobody else around? No.

@MistletoeandGin

Of course wearing a mask outside when I don’t get within 5m of anyone is a virtue signal.

What a load of bollocks.
How on on earth does it affect you if people are wearing masks outside, how is someone doing things differently to you virtue signalling?!
You realise they'll probably be wearing their masks for them, not giving an actual shiny shit what's going on your head, and why you think people are or aren't wearing them/silently judging them?!
Hardly doing it to say "look at me, aren't I good" or whatever lol.

Scottishskifun · 29/12/2020 17:41

No because the nature of outdoors means lots of natural ventilation. Also as said unless wearing a medical grade mask properly (and changed regularly) it doesn't stop you catching covid it stops you spreading large covid droplets (small ones still get through most masks).

QueenoftheAir · 29/12/2020 17:50

I strongly suspect that 99% of those wearing them in the street do so because they think it protects themselves rather than any altruism for others

Well @AlecTrevelyan006 maybe that's so - I don't know what goes through others' minds. I know that the mask primarily stops me passing on anything to others, that it protects others from me.

But apparently, if we all wear a mask, there is some protection for the wearer as well.

Kaliorphic · 29/12/2020 17:55

Surely a balaclava would class as a face covering?

They do. My kiddies wear them instead of masks. Little robbers in the making 😱🤣

Good rant but I didn’t say any of that.
I said if I wore a mask when I don’t get within 5m of anyone else it would be a virtue signal.
I don’t give a shit what anyone else wears on their face or their motivations for doing so. They can smear their face in dog shit for all I care. I don’t get within 5m of them anyway.

Kaliorphic · 29/12/2020 18:02

I'd think I'd keep more than a 5 metre distance from someone who smeared their face in dog shit 🤣

It's interesting that those who can't tolerate the masks for long/at all, like to tell others how they're being stupid and just virtue signalling if they wear a mask in the street, yet get upset if there are even comments on how other people have got used to them after disliking them.
As I've said before, I wear my mask on the street, it's because it's mandated in the shop I've just been in, it's mandated on the bus I'm about to get on (I'm not exempt) and it's just easier than keep faffing about putting it on and taking it off, especially in windy weather when the damned thing threatens to blow away just when you've got it looped around one ear....... I do sometimes genuinely forget as well as I am used to wearing them constantly at work.
Of course I couldn't possibly just be trying to make things easier for myself though, I must be some sort of mask virtue signaller who's an idiot to boot for wearing a mask in the street.
I've pretty much given up on other people through all this.
It all boils down to the same attitude -
"Hey hey!! Respect my choices and opinions!! You must!! Everyone is different!! You are an awful person for not respecting my choices. And btw your choices are stupid a"

I don’t wear a mask outside because I don’t go within 5m of anyone. I don’t go in shops because I’m claustrophobic and can’t tolerate a mask. I don’t care what other people do, as I said above. You can wear them in bed if you want. I said if I was to wear a mask outside, when I don’t ever get within 5m or another person, would be a virtue signal. How is that a judgement of what you do in busy shopping areas?
Cerealkillers · 29/12/2020 18:15

Yes because I can’t be bothered taking it on/off and less touching of said mask the better. Also I’m so used to them now I forget I’m even wearing one so easier to keep it on when in public.

Boxofsaltsachets · 29/12/2020 18:26

@MistletoeandGin

It was a general comment about everything I've read/seen/heard around this subject from when it all kicked off. PPS on this thread have left comments along the lines of not understanding why someone would wear one in the street, that wearing one in the street is pointless from a covid pov, that wearing one alone in a car is 'madness'. I'm putting the pov across that it's not always "the fear" or "look at how amazing I am wearing my mask in the street to protect everyone" virtue signalling (which I've seen and heard said) that has people wearing them in the street, just simplicity sometimes. I'm very well aware of how and when it's likely to transmit, I live with it every day due to my job.
But you've kind of proved my point really, you've jumped on me when my post wasn't specifically aimed at you, (if it were I'd have tagged you like this one) and shouted me down over it, which is kind of my point really.
I made a general observation based on lots of things, and my personal experience that apparently I'm wrong for now. But still expect me to respect your pov and choices. Kinda proves my point really.

MistletoeandGin · 29/12/2020 18:28

But still expect me to respect your pov and choices

Well I don’t know about anyone else but I don’t expect you to do anything. I don’t care what you think about my choices, and I don’t care what choices you make.

Boxofsaltsachets · 29/12/2020 18:40

Well don't then 🤷 but you took umbridge at my comment, that wasn't aimed at you, and decided to pick a fight about it. I don't care what choices other people make unless they impact me, some people seem to care regardless of if there's an impact on them, it seems hating masks is morphing into hating anyone who wears one for some people by extension. Each to their own. I'm not particularly bothered about masks/exemptions because I keep myself away from people as much as I can, but I'm realistic enough to understand I'm likely to get it anyway at some point, and I need to be very careful and vigilant around those I'm working with who are particularly susceptible for that reason alone. The Government recognise that, it's why I'm tested every week, why after the initial shortages, most care homes have enough PPE.

I do object to being accused of virtue signalling and being an idiot though (once again, not aimed directly at you for clarification!!) Which I have seen, heard and read about happening, for wearing a mask in the street between shop/bus when actually, I'm just doing what's easier for me.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 29/12/2020 18:47

Sometimes. It keeps my face warm this time of year!

Gingernaut · 29/12/2020 18:51

Yes.

As a wearing of glasses, it takes so long to adjust the mask and glasses in order not to steam the lenses up with condensation, I cannot be arsed to keep taking it off, putting it on, fiddling with it, seeing if that last fiddle worked, fiddling with it again, seeing if that worked, fiddling, watching, fiddling, watching and so on for a good ten minutes.

Once I find position that works, I just keep it on for convenience.

Stellaris22 · 29/12/2020 19:21

Yes. I am in a Tier 4 area but been doing it for a while.

I used to duck into driveways when walking the dog, or cross the road, to avoid being near people. This is getting more and more difficult when other people don't give you the same respect and pavements get busier. I'd rather be cautious.

I also carry sanitiser to use after every time I touch a traffic light button or similar.

twinklespells · 29/12/2020 19:23

Down our high streets no, but they've closed roads to help with social distancing and you can stay 2m away from people easily enough. I live quite rurally. I also get insanely hot very quickly and am hoping it's a hormonal problem or something fixable, wearing a mask is hideous at the moment.

MaudesMum · 29/12/2020 19:53

I do if I'm in a queue, and I would if I was in a crowd, but otherwise, nope. Like @twinklespells I also get insanely hot very easily (in my case deffo menopausal) so anything I can do to keep my temperature down the better.

HesterShaw1 · 29/12/2020 19:56

@Ginfordinner

No. But then I don’t go anywhere busy.

Same here. As it is cold I can't avoid steaming up my glasses outside regardless of the style of mask I wear. I always wear one in shops, and wash it after every use.

I don't wash it after every use. I wear it when I have to, then put it in a pocket or handbag. I haven't made myself ill so far. Maybe that's to do with the amount of fresh air unencumbered by a mask I breathe.
amicissimma · 29/12/2020 21:59

In the cold weather I sometimes keep one on if I'm going from one shop to another in the hope that my glasses don't steam up as much. I'm not sure that really works.

Otherwise, no.

confuseddotcom090 · 29/12/2020 22:06

You only have to watch a smoker or see breath in very cold weather to see it travels more than 6' 6".

And you only have to watch someone vape with a mask on to see how they totally don't stop aerosol transmission
