No. I always wear a mask where it's legally required, or requested by a venue/dd's nursery (dropoffs done outside on the courtyard). I remove it immediately when I come out of a shop/venue/public transport, even if I might go into a different shop a while later. Tier 4, London zone 1, so streets and playgrounds are always busy and it's not always possible to maintain 2m distance. About 20% of people around here are wearing them on the street; only one or two in playgrounds. I am not clinically vulnerable or at risk and don't take additional precautions over those that are legally required, e.g. don't quarantine post or wash shopping.

GintyMcGinty · 28/12/2020 21:00

Sometimes to keep my face warm if the wind and sleet is driving. It's quite effective at that.

Otherwise no.

sunshineandshowers40 · 28/12/2020 22:16

No. Only if I'm queuing.

TheSilentStars · 28/12/2020 22:18

Yes.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/12/2020 22:18

Of course not.
I can't anyway as they make me hyperventilate within a minute or two.
The benefits do not outweigh the risks.
When I did try wearing them, it was hard work trying to watch where my feet were going because of the loss of peripheral vision.

I draw the line at pointless gestures of wearing a visor outside. Firstly because its useless, secondly because it's dangerous if its fogged up.

I spent a montb travelling from Hong Kong to Beijing in the year of Swine Flu and masks were not worn widely. Occasionally by people such as traffic officers exposed to smog all day, but not ordinary people in the street or public buildings. They really are not as normal as people like to make out.

@sunshineandshowers40

Yes I would wear one in a queue. Or a few times I’ve bought a takeaway coffee from a van, I’ve worn one when getting served.
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/12/2020 22:24

Yes, I would wear one in a queue but I haven't had to queue to go into a shop yet.

PandemicPalava · 28/12/2020 22:32

When the shops were open I wore one between shops as much safer and easier than taking it off and putting back on. Generally no

Spiratedaway · 28/12/2020 23:06

Nope would actually like to breath in some fresh air

Tootsey11 · 28/12/2020 23:12

Lots wearing them outside in local town. I do if going from one shop to another, otherwise no.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 28/12/2020 23:24

no

Pootle40 · 28/12/2020 23:30

No and never will. Madness

TuxedoPantherSheHer · 28/12/2020 23:32

Going for a walk, no.

Going in and out of places I just leave it on til I’m done. Sometimes I leave it on til I’m home, especially since it turned colder.

Have you been to HK recently?
givemegin2021 · 29/12/2020 03:37

@confuseddotcom090

Lots of people are replying like they think the mask will protect them. They're not supposed to do that. They're meant to protect others from YOUR COVID particles.

Not that there is much decent evidence they protect anyone from anything, but honestly....wearing one to protect yourself...might as well get a lucky rabbit's foot.

That is correct, it is more effective if the COVID carrier wears a mask, which is why some countries ask everyone to wear a mask due to some people having no symptoms.

How selfish to say that you would not wear a mask because it doesn't do much protection to yourself. But each to their own.

do you wear a mask in the street?
Turtleshelly · 29/12/2020 03:39

In a busy street? Yes. If we reach a busy point of a country walk (beauty spot or suddenly lots of groups or someone waiting to chat?) yes. Otherwise, when it’s easy to cross or keep 2m, no.

givemegin2021 · 29/12/2020 03:41

@MistletoeandGin

And that isn’t ‘scientific evidence’, it’s a picture some Dr (or someone claiming to be a Dr) has made. I’m not saying there is no scientific evidence for masks, but that isn’t it.
Even if you are keeping a social distance of 5m most of the time, how can you be sure no one coughs or sneezes as they walk past you. Do you whip out a mask every time someone approaches your 5m radius?
WanderingFruitWonderer · 29/12/2020 04:24

Funnily enough, I've just started to, in busy areas. I didn't before, and I don't in quiet areas.
I actually think the odds of Covid spreading from people passing eachother in the street outdoors are virtually zero. But I've heard that taking our masks on & off continually contaminates them? So, if I'm out, I put a clean mask on just before entering the first shop/other indoor space of the day, and keep it on until I've left the last one, wearing outdoors in between.
Having said that, I'm trying to avoid shops and so on as much as possible these days anyway (tier 4) But I've almost run out of food, and other essentials, and no online delivery slots available, so I have to today. I'll just zip round very quickly, and wear a mask as described.
This is all just my own personal choice though. I don't expect other people to do the same...

EmmanuelleMakro · 29/12/2020 04:28

No! Completely pointless and definitely think a lot less of —deluded— people who do.

EmmanuelleMakro · 29/12/2020 04:30

Exactly

ivykaty44 · 29/12/2020 04:52

@Twickerhun pop a piece of kitchen rol folded into four, inside your mask and it’ll stop your glasses steaming up

LegoAndLolDolls · 29/12/2020 04:55

Yes if going shopping ( rare event this year) I got fed up of taking it on and off.

To go for a walk in my rural village? No. It's rare to see more than say two people so easy to give people a wide birth.

I'm kind of getting used to masks. I think I will soon feel naked without one.

BooksAreNotEssentialInWales · 29/12/2020 04:57

I’d much rather social distance and I avoid places where I have to wear a mask, my glasses steam up and slip off if I look down so I find depth perception very hard and am at risk of falling. I’m very short sighted but sometimes try with my glasses off which is risky if there’s any level changes or trip hazards. I also find I need to lean in closer to hear. I’d much rather have space, move quickly through an area to avoid prolonged contact and be outside as much as possible. I haven’t had so much as a cold all year and live in a very high risk area so I’m happy that I’m doing my best to avoid contagion.

How is someone sneezing near me going to effect me protecting them by me wearing a mask? The person sneezing needs to use the crook of their elbow

The mask is not to protect you but to protect others from your germs

drigon · 29/12/2020 05:07

Yes, because of the faff and fiddle of getting the mask on correctly with glasses. I just leave it on until I get back into my car.
