No checks on the roads

I have been going out to take the dogs to the enclosed field we exercise them in, to take the car to be MOTd, to do the food shop. My OH has been going to work and back. We haven't seen a single police 'block' monitoring motorists in transit. Has anyone? Or was that just scare tactics?

dementedpixie · 27/12/2020 16:48

Do you really think they have the manpower to put checks on every road?

JacobReesMogadishu · 27/12/2020 16:49

Are you near a border of different tier areas? If not why would they need to?

TroubadorinTrouble · 27/12/2020 16:50

I haven’t seen or heard of any but then again, I wasn’t expecting to (Tier 3). The police don’t have the manpower and resources to deal fully with real crimes, I can’t see there being much extra to man roadblocks.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 27/12/2020 16:52

At boarders yes..maybe at the odd tier crossing but even then be surprised. Cant imagine them having enough people to do this anyway

emmathedilemma · 27/12/2020 16:54

There’s a surprising number of cars on the road here given that the message is to stay local and the only place people can really be going is food shopping or for outdoor exercise!

MawkishHawk · 27/12/2020 16:54

I don’t think road blocks or checkpoints have ever been suggested, have they? Where did you get the idea they had been?

Or maybe I seem to remember talk of police in Devon stopping people on the A30 to ask for their reasons for travel in the first lockdown, or maybe I imagined that.

Anyway, no one has time or resources for that on any significant scale. Police were stretched before covid!

Ifailed · 27/12/2020 16:55

The police don't have enough resources to stop people breaking the law on the road as it is (speeding, careless driving, no MOT etc), so hardly likely to be able to magic up staff to cover Covid.

Givemeabreak88 · 27/12/2020 17:00

Well it’s like how on London buses the message says that police and tfl officers will be getting on buses to check people are wearing masks yet in this whole time I have never once seen one get on a bus. It’s just scare tactics

SilverGlitterBaubles · 27/12/2020 17:06

Police do not have the resources for this.

yawnsvillex · 27/12/2020 17:09

Scare tactics ..... where would these police come from?

Manpower to this extent is just NOT available

MawkishHawk · 27/12/2020 17:10

@Givemeabreak88

Ah - Met police officers all get free travel on TFL, on the grounds they intervene in any significant incidents they happen to witness, even when off duty. So you not seeing them doesn’t mean they’re not there. They’ll be there a lot of the time, just not in uniform.
Givemeabreak88 · 27/12/2020 17:13

No it says on the announcement that police will be getting on buses to enforce mask wearing ,
I am exempt and was worried about being confronted by the police but I have never once had the police get on the bus to check if people were wearing masks.

Givemeabreak88 · 27/12/2020 17:15

It literally says on the announcement that police and tfl officers will be travelling on London buses to enforce it.

HarrietSchulenberg · 27/12/2020 17:18

Good grief, I'm glad they're not! Imagine the fear that would create!

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 27/12/2020 17:23

Nope. I've still been attending psychotherapy every week and he lives an hour away. I literally cross into a different county once a week and haven't been asked where I'm going once. It wouldn't matter if I was as its classed as a medical appointment but I'm surprised that they aren't stopping people going in and out of London.

MawkishHawk · 27/12/2020 17:25

They’re travelling on London buses all the time. Just most of them aren’t going to enforce every minor infraction they see on their way to/from work or they’d never get anywhere. If an off-duty officer was there and someone was being a loud antisocial arse about not distancing and not wearing a mask and other travellers were getting uncomfortable or it looked like it might kick off, they might flash their badge and intervene, but they’d leave alone the quiet person in the corner with no mask who was minding their own business.

HelloMissus · 27/12/2020 17:26

You expected road blocks? Seriously?

Givemeabreak88 · 27/12/2020 17:29

Ok well that’s not what the message implies, the message implies they will be doing random checks. I’ve travelled on buses daily since the start and have never been questioned. They are obviously trying to scare people into thinking it will be random checks m.youtube.com/watch?v=n3nmQZO6YRw

JamSarnie · 27/12/2020 17:31

I think you have been reading too many MN threads if you think police will have road blocks everywhere.

Can you imagine them stopping everyone that can legally go to the shops that are open, work, education, exercise, caring duties etc. Contrary to what some people on MN think, you can drive for many reasons within the law so it would be a complete waste of time to ask everyone where they were going.

HugeAckmansWife · 27/12/2020 17:32

Ive been up and down the country regularly for legitimate purposes and have never seen any police at services, which I would have thought would be an obvious place to check people if they were going to - they might have caught Cummings!! A few on the side of the motorway but only as you sometimes do anyway for speeding. I'm glad - i do not want to live in a police state.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 27/12/2020 17:36

Well of course not. The police haven't got enough manpower at the best of times.....

Ohdoleavemealone · 27/12/2020 17:37

I drove 50 miles to work and back yesterday and saw no road blocks although one sign said "warning delays at border" so maybe they did checks there?

EggysMom · 27/12/2020 17:39

No border checks between Chester and Wrexham today Grin but there were signs on the M56 (and M60, curiously) saying "Border Congestion, delays likely" so perhaps advance warning (very early warning!) for the Scottish border?

Quincejam · 27/12/2020 17:41

My son who is a policeman laughed his socks off at this - stopping people on a dual carriageway trying to prove where they live and whether they could legitimately travel? How long do you think that would take?? The whole of his shift in a fairly big town is about 15 uniformed...

Unescorted · 27/12/2020 17:43

We have 5 police patrols for out LA that has several trans Pennine routes running across it..... we have more roads in and out of our village.
