I have been going out to take the dogs to the enclosed field we exercise them in, to take the car to be MOTd, to do the food shop. My OH has been going to work and back. We haven't seen a single police 'block' monitoring motorists in transit. Has anyone? Or was that just scare tactics?

OP posts:
PhilCornwall1 · 27/12/2020 19:43

Or maybe I seem to remember talk of police in Devon stopping people on the A30 to ask for their reasons for travel in the first lockdown, or maybe I imagined that.

It didn't happen.

campion · 27/12/2020 19:45

I thought it was guidance not the law.

If the police could stop cars/vans/lorries/buses jumping red lights and dangerous tailgating (both illegal) they'd be doing more good round here.
But they're under resourced and overworked apparently.

North Yorkshire Police must have the opposite situation. Or a power complex.

Remmy123 · 27/12/2020 19:45

I haven't seen a policeman for years 😂

Bluebellpainting · 27/12/2020 19:46

@Nicknacky Not much- I showed them my work ID badge and said I’m going to work at the hospital. I didn’t give it much thought- the roads weren’t busy but it was the first day of tier 4 so I think they were using it as a deterrent really.

PhilCornwall1 · 27/12/2020 19:48

@LitPeach

Frankly we need army and police patrols for deterrence effect more than anything else.

A few £5000 fines for the covidiots 'popping out' for walks in the park or buying Prosecco from Tesco would soon put a stop to it Hmm

Weren't you on another thread saying fines should be £10k?
PhilCornwall1 · 27/12/2020 19:50

If you tweet that you are going to break the rules, they'll be around in seconds! 😂
Nicknacky · 27/12/2020 19:51

@Bluebellpainting So they didn’t say they were stopping you because of covid regulations? I’m only asking because I know of people who have assumed that’s what they have been stopped but on asking it turns out they were stoped for other reasons?

slipperywhensparticus · 27/12/2020 19:51

My ex travelled to Scotland (from the Midlands) and from a tier 2 to tier 3 all the way across to tier 4 in a car with no car insurance he gets away with it he always does

PaperMonster · 27/12/2020 19:54

We were a bit concerned a few weeks ago when we heard what North Yorks police were doing. We’re in a Tier 3 bordering on to North Yorks and so N Yorks is our local area - anyway we’ve not seen any Police stopping people. At the time, our Tier 3 area had far fewer cases than the Tier 2 town we usually go to - but we’re about the same now.

Both of these are completely legal even where I live in Wales where we are in full lockdown. Why would anyone get fined for outdoor exercise or popping to the shops to buy stuff they’re allowed to?
Bluebellpainting · 27/12/2020 20:01

@Nicknacky I can’t remember what they said exactly but seen as they asked me where I was going and didn’t give me any other explanation such as breathalyser, speeding or a car break light etc it seems to fit with Covid. It was also right where tier 4 becomes tier 2.

Nicknacky · 27/12/2020 20:06

@Bluebellpainting They would need a specific reason to breathalyse you, merely driving a car doesn’t give them the power to do so.

However they need no reason to stop any motor vehicle on a road, so to be fair to won’t necessarily have been because of covid. Vehicle stops are common. Most forces aren’t doing routine stops and my area have publicly said they aren’t doing them. Or it might have been an over zealous officer, who knows.

Nicknacky · 27/12/2020 20:07

I mean, most forces aren’t doing routine stops for covid checks, not general vehicle stops!

Bluebellpainting · 27/12/2020 20:14

@Nicknacky i can’t be certain as I didn’t ask but it came across as because of covid. I cant remember the exact words but they asked me where I was going and all was fine when I showed them my badge and said work. They were stopping other cars to and it was where the tier areas border. All a bit odd place to set up if not for covid.

caringcarer · 27/12/2020 20:16

There aren't enough police officers for road blocks everywhere.

@LitPeach Is it true what another poster said about your children not having left their house since spring?

I assume you are on the wind up😂. Good one lol

tigger1001 · 27/12/2020 20:26

@LitPeach

Absolutely OP- the enforcement or lack of is a joke.

I'm in tier 4 and you'd never know people were supposed to be at home with the number of cars on the road and people out and about.

We need a proper lockdown. Army patrolling the streets issuing £5000 fines for non key workers caught outside with prison for repeat offenders.

I'd also like to see the government look at using phone data to catch non key workers out of their homes and fine/jail them accordingly.

And who exactly are the key workers in this scenario?

Plenty who are not "key workers" are actually still working.

I am in Scotland so basically back in lockdown, but lots of people are still working, myself and my partner included, thankfully.

dementedpixie · 27/12/2020 20:27
@BooksAreNotEssentialInWales

Frankly they should not be permitted. I would institute a tough lockdown until April 1st- no one leaves home unless a key worker. This is necessary to keep people safe and save lives.

Supermarkets should be closed with food delivered by the army. I would not permit outdoor exercise- too many people have abused this privilege so it should be withdrawn.

I would have the army and armed police patrolling residential areas making sure everyone abides by the lockdown. First offence should result in an on the spot £5000 fine. Second should be a £10,000 fine and 14 days in jail.
You sound like a joy

Glitterblue · 27/12/2020 20:29

We live on the England/Scotland border, DH works in Scotland and said there were 2 police cars sitting at the border the other morning.

You want to stop people going for walks?? No thanks. Going out for exercise has helped so many people. Disagree with attempting to stop it.

If the government wanted Tesco to stop selling alcohol then it would be on Tesco, not on the customer. If it's legal to sell, it's legal to buy.

NothingIsWrong · 27/12/2020 20:33

@LitPeach do you have any idea how many volunteers and staff it took to get food delivered to those who were shielding back in April? You'd end up with half the population working on feeding the other half which is insane and completely defeats the point of any lockdown.

MotherForker · 27/12/2020 20:33

@LitPeach I think you should move to North Korea. The army have no right to police, unless there is a change to legislation.

No outdoor exercise? Are you on glue? You know that the suicide rate has increased this year? And locking people in their houses will likely exacerbate this.

Also being healthy and fit is important for good covid outcomes. What about people with no outside space? What about dogs that needs exercise?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/12/2020 20:38

I'd also like to see the government look at using phone data to catch non key workers out of their homes and fine/jail them accordingly.

Good luck with that, I don't always bother taking my phone so I've no idea how they'll use my phone data to 'catch me'.

@LitPeach I can't decide whether you're goady or actually want to live in a police state.

StealthPolarBear · 27/12/2020 20:39

So people who aren't key workers but can't wfh should just resign? Ffs
