No checks on the roads

I have been going out to take the dogs to the enclosed field we exercise them in, to take the car to be MOTd, to do the food shop. My OH has been going to work and back. We haven't seen a single police 'block' monitoring motorists in transit. Has anyone? Or was that just scare tactics?

To add-ours is North Yorkshire.

GintyMcGinty · 27/12/2020 18:31

They won't be any roadblocks.

We don't live in a police state.

Nonamesavail · 27/12/2020 18:31

Nope. I have been from a tier 4 to a tier 3 for xhild contact. A 4 hour drive. No checks.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/12/2020 18:33

Recent in my area they needed to close a few roads due to ice, including a major routeThey didn't have enough Police to put on all the required road blocks. They had a couple (PCSOs) on the main one, and used roving patrols for the others.
I doubt they would have time to enforce lockdown.

OxfordwillsaveusbyFebruary · 27/12/2020 18:34

not tier 4 -all bordering tier 3

HunterHearstHelmsley · 27/12/2020 18:38

I got pulled over at the beginning of first lockdown. I had the temerity of driving home after being in hospital. A friend was also stopped at Euston when London changed to tier 4. They were travelling home. It only seems to be the easy targets.

Sparklingbrook · 27/12/2020 18:39

I drove South on the M5 today and there was a warning sign on the gantry to ‘expect long delays’ at the border around Jct 8 presumably going into Wales on the M50?

AcornAutumn · 27/12/2020 18:41

@Givemeabreak88

Well it’s like how on London buses the message says that police and tfl officers will be getting on buses to check people are wearing masks yet in this whole time I have never once seen one get on a bus. It’s just scare tactics
Oh my sister had this twice on the same route.
Ginogineli · 27/12/2020 18:47

Apart from Scotland and possibly London all other travel is still legally allowed - advice only outside or tier 3 so why would there be blocks

Pat123dev · 27/12/2020 18:55

Devon Cornwall had checks first lock down, but not since.

JacobReesMogadishu · 27/12/2020 19:05

Have you not read the previous posts?

@mrshonda

North Yorkshire/West Yorkshire border on a rural road - friend in car was stopped and questioned, then asked to turn around as he was going for a walk just over the border (half a mile). They've been very keen up there.
See this makes me cross. He was allowed to go for that walk. North York’s police are totally overstepping their authority. You can go from tier 3 to tier 2, you just have to take your rules with you. So he’s allowed for a walk!
AlwaysLatte · 27/12/2020 19:08

No, I haven't seen any police driving to my mum's 30 miles away several times this week.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/12/2020 19:10

No police out today. Loads of cars about.

In
April when the roads were deserted, I saw a police car driving around on every journey I did.

MotherForker · 27/12/2020 19:15

@LitPeach er, no thanks. This isn't North Korea. Policing in this country by consent, not force. We need to be enforcing our freedoms, not asking the Police to further overstep the mark.

Lemons1571 · 27/12/2020 19:22

@HunterHearstHelmsley I agree that it’s the easy targets. Like @Beccasb we had a couple of roadblocks on a road heading out of our naice and very compliant market town back in May. South central England. Very low covid rates. They were turning people round if their excuse wasn’t good enough. Although my friend just said “going shopping“ and was waved on, so not much point - surely everyone could say yeah essential shopping. Are they going to frisk you for possession of Tesco bag for life’s??

Another friend in London said the police had been told not to challenge anyone in her area of north London for fear of antagonising the population. So the police just laid low and monitored.

Mind you, the list of reasons that you can leave tier 4 is extensive. I’m tier 4 and have a busy week ahead outdoors, will be out far more than in a usual wfh week.

Whatafrickennightmare · 27/12/2020 19:25

Live in Scotland on the border to England. Police were stopping cars on Wednesday and there was a higher police presence , haven't seen them since 🤷.

WanderingMilly · 27/12/2020 19:28

No checks on motorways in central England and quite a lot of traffic, even on Christmas Day (I was travelling). I don't think police checks were threatened at all, except for Scotland, they said there would be a few in case English start making for Scotland....!

'Border congestion, don't travel' is to stop hauliers going down to Dover to try to cross over to France....but I presume you knew that?!

LitPeach · 27/12/2020 19:28

Frankly we need army and police patrols for deterrence effect more than anything else.

A few £5000 fines for the covidiots 'popping out' for walks in the park or buying Prosecco from Tesco would soon put a stop to it Hmm

BackforGood · 27/12/2020 19:29

Even if any forces (other than Yorkshire it seems) had the resources for this, how exactly would they be able to prove anyone's stories ?

I can only think people, crumble and confess! 😁. No idea otherwise how they manage to issue 160 fines. I suppose if someone tries to lie and say they live in York and the police ask them their postcode and it isn’t right that might be a give away

Yes, I can see that would be the case for many, but, if someone were traveling some distance and gave a reason that was allowed (that they were a student / were going to work / were having child contact / etc - I don't see how the police would be able to realistically verify or uncover it isn't the truth.

Bluebellpainting · 27/12/2020 19:30

I got stopped last week- I was travelling from tier 4 to another tier 4 area for work but had to travel through a tier 2 area. My journey is 8 miles so not excessive but just proves how ridiculous some of the tier decisions in my area were. We are all tier 4 now so doubt I’ll be stopped again.

Nicknacky · 27/12/2020 19:30

@LitPeach Putting aside the fact there is no spare police to do that, how do you propose fines being introduced when people aren’t committing any offences?

And I think you do need to leave your house. You have lost all common sense.

Nicknacky · 27/12/2020 19:32

@Bluebellpainting What did the officers actually say to you when they stopped you?

HelloMissus · 27/12/2020 19:41

I can only assume that litpeach is some sort of Covid conspiracy theory plant playing a really bad attempt at reverse psychology.

They’re on every Covid thread demanding ludicrous restrictions and sanctions.
I’m fully expecting a suggestion of the death penalty for going for a walk Grin

Chimeraforce · 27/12/2020 19:42

You sound disappointed O. PShock
Maybe you'd like watchtowers, guns and razor wire too. 😕
