Looks like they'll be an announcement of new restrictions today - ministers meeting this morning so (despite papers last night) doesn't seem they've decided what to do yet - more places in Tier 4 or national lockdown, maybe. Xmas Sad

Robert Jenrick quoted in Guardian today saying 'A judgment needs to be made as to whether the tiered system is strong enough, or whether at some point in the future we need to take further action.' which sounds a bit ominous...

I just sat down to watch never ending story ffs now they’ve cancelled it for bumbling Boris!

I know a lot of people want the schools to shut but we have two toddlers at nursery and if they shut we are absolutely screwed - one of us will have to lose our job and we’re about to move house to be nearer to my family so that will be scuppered too.

Anyway I know we’ve got to think of the bigger picture and all that and everyone’s got their own issues I just wanted to rant that’s all.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/12/2020 13:52

The thing is, I don't think they can announce today that we will lockdown from boxing day as people will just meet on mass over the next 48 hours

But can you imagine the outrage and blind disregard if they impose it any earlier? There will be people who still need to buy food for Christmas, and after the u turn over the 5 day relaxation period, people will probably just ignore any new rules unless they put the army and police on the streets.

MorganKitten · 23/12/2020 13:53

Matt Handcock already let slip restrictions in T4 won’t be lifted until the vaccine is widely administered.

I just sat down to watch 'never ending story' ffs now they’ve cancelled it for bumbling Boris!

To be fair, he is his own kind of never ending story right now

BarbaraofSeville · 23/12/2020 13:54

I don't want the schools to shut Coriander just that I can't see how we'll get the virus under control if they don't.

Nousernameforme · 23/12/2020 13:54

I don't think we will get one today or we would have been given a time already, or at least confirmation that it will happen. Everyone is just saying their could be one today, equally there could not

Nousernameforme · 23/12/2020 13:58

Sorry x posted with you all I'm a bit slow

ancientgran · 23/12/2020 13:59

Herefordshire sounds idyllic. It is and I think they like it that way so they keep it quiet.

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/12/2020 13:59

Are we expecting lockdown announcement or do we think just more tier 4 areas...

Castiel07 · 23/12/2020 14:02

Even though things have maybe been leaked, this time it does feel more hushed
Normally we get given a few hours notice of a press conference at least (officially) on the news outlets.

Yes there seems a lot of confusion in the news outlets whether it's lockdown or just an expansion of tier 4 areas..
I think because it's more hushed it's likely to be big news.

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/12/2020 14:03

Sorry bold fail on that last post!

MarcelineMissouri · 23/12/2020 14:04

Matt Hancock leading a press conference at 3

Castiel07 · 23/12/2020 14:06

Was expecting Borris if big news, but I spect he is still trying to negotiate brexit.

LarkDescending · 23/12/2020 14:08

Dr Jenny Harries coming back for this one. Haven’t seen her for a while.

SeptSpiral · 23/12/2020 14:11

Any chance it’s good news on the oxford vaccine rather than a lockdown?

Re today’s addition of 416 deaths to the total:

Date of death ranges from 19 April to 22 December 2020.

April!!

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/12/2020 14:16

Matt Hancock leading a press conference at 3

Oh probably not big news then

IloveJKRowling · 23/12/2020 14:16

How about masks in schools at a minimum?

Just allowing kids to mix indoors for hours and hours with literally no attempt whatsoever to stop airborne transmission of the virus is not good. No social distancing and no masks - while they're closing businesses that do both. It's not only stupid, it's morally wrong too.

In other countries kids wear masks in the classroom and have done for some time.

HopeAndDriftWood · 23/12/2020 14:17

I’d hoped maybe if it was Hancock it could be some kind of good news, but the media seems convinced it’s about tier 4...

I suspect telling people they’ll be in lockdown/tier 4 from Boxing Day won’t help with compliance over Christmas.

myhobbyisouting · 23/12/2020 14:17

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Hancock and Co we're just coming on to give us a Christmas rendition of the Bever Ending Story tune

Nousernameforme · 23/12/2020 14:21

I can't find anything about press conference today so they are keeping it quiet intentionally or not. It's either huge or just a number update
