Looks like they'll be an announcement of new restrictions today - ministers meeting this morning so (despite papers last night) doesn't seem they've decided what to do yet - more places in Tier 4 or national lockdown, maybe. Xmas Sad

Robert Jenrick quoted in Guardian today saying 'A judgment needs to be made as to whether the tiered system is strong enough, or whether at some point in the future we need to take further action.' which sounds a bit ominous...

Aren't dropping.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 23/12/2020 16:48

I don't think it is correct to compare Christmas to Eid. For Christians Eater is much more important religiously than Christmas and we could not by law meet at Easter - first lock down. So Christians have already been hammered by these appalling laws already

You don’t think it’s correct to compare? Not surprising coming from you.
Eid is an important celebration and was missed by a large group of people, like Christmas. Easter is not celebrated in the same way that Xmas is, as you are well aware.
But like I say, I’m not surprised by your view on this. 🙄

ConfusedcomMum · 23/12/2020 16:52

Also Xenia I'm sure you've mentioned before that you live in a multicultural London Borough (I could be wrong) but I thought you would have known that most other major religions like Judaism and Hinduism have several festivals a year which they've had to spend in lockdown too.

kwest · 23/12/2020 17:09

@MercyBooth

Businesses will be so pleased to have it confirmed yet again that the November lockdown was for nothing.
Yes and DH not allowed to work in tier 4 now. And NO financial assistance from govt either as new SE. We’re pig sick of playing in-out-in-out of lockdown when they blatantly don’t work or else we wouldn’t be where we are now, would we?
zaffa · 23/12/2020 17:15

@kwest I don't think the problem is that lockdowns don't work, I think it's that it doesn't work to leave them

kwest · 23/12/2020 17:17

What so we stay locked down forever or until enough people are vaccinated? Not acceptable when you receive no support.

zaffa · 23/12/2020 17:27

@kwest

No I didn't suggest that we stay locked down forever. But the point of the lockdown was to lower cases and it does, the issues are about what happens when we leave lockdowns. A better plan has to come for post lockdowns or they need to up support to remain in them. Even with this last lockdown the NHS is close to breaking and we may struggle to access medical care along with public services so if numbers escalate as they do when we come out of lockdowns we won't cope when the tier four restrictions are lifted. If the transmission is as high as they say there will be no customers for any of the businesses because everyone will get sick almost simultaneously by the sounds of it
zaffa · 23/12/2020 17:28

It's not just lockdowns that keep us home. The virus will do that too purely because we will be unwell - I mean everyone does agree that if you are actually infected then you have to remain at home and isolate until you are well and test negative right?

Debatable. If you're not sick, it's a bit weird tbh.

🤦🏻‍♀️🤪

zaffa · 23/12/2020 17:44

Well I guess now we all know why lockdowns are needed - because people like you wouldn't isolate and avoid spreading the virus if you don't have any symptoms. You do understand that every time you display that selfish attitude it contributes to more stringent measures because it shows that we can't be trusted to be responsible without it being law?

Frenchdressing · 23/12/2020 17:45

Er lockdowns do work in terms of reducing the R number. There is actual evidence ce to show that.

zaffa · 23/12/2020 17:46

@kwest if you're looking for one of the biggest reasons we are in and out of lockdown and your husband's business is taking such a hammering, please direct your attention to @Jourdain11 - hopefully
They can answer any questions you have about why lockdowns are so necessary.

@BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze

I don't think those who were planning Christmas with family would agree with you. I am in tier 4 but have had a few days to get use to the situation. 2 days before is shit

Well I’m firmly of the opinion that public health comes before Xmas. Hopefully then, next Xmas will be better for all. People need to lose this attitude that just because they’re allowed to do something, they should. Equally, anyone that is genuinely struggling should do what they need to do to be ok in my opinion.
Let’s not forget that Muslims got a few hours notice about Eid. I know plenty of people who thought that Muslims had no right to ‘whinge’, perhaps because they couldn’t give a shit about others and thought it would all be fine in time for Christmas.

I agree with you about Eid and at the time said it was shit and they would probably do it at Christmas and was shouted down, that they wouldn't do that.

Which is why I was surprised its not from tonight. But as someone else said what is better, going to see your family for one day or rush to the supermarket tonight and tomorrow.

Either way the spike in January is going to be blamed on the public not on the government

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 23/12/2020 17:53

Gone from tier 2 to 3 here not suprised
But i missed part about schools what did they say?
I have always wanted my ds yr 11 in but if the numbers are as bad as they say and none of us can mix indoors ( unless working ) then I have more of a problem with him going back and sitting in a classroom with 30 others and then another 30 etc
As he can still bring it home even if kids aren't usually badly affected and can't see how we can be put up so quick then schools go back unless numbers are right down

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 23/12/2020 17:58

The government should never have pandered to the public. Christmas mixing has the potential to be a total disaster in the weeks to come. So it maybe better to mix with family for a day that everyone to rush to a supermarket, who knows. But it should never have been allowed in the first place. They should have managed people’s expectations.

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 17:58

Schools will return I've no doubt.
They are going on about testing , as if they will be so easy to do and achieve.
So reluctant to close them again but happy to come on and scare everyone about new mutant strains and what not.
I'm glad I'm not a teacher :(

Again I agree with you. As soon as it started going up again, they should have said its shit but you can only celebrate Christmas within your own household , back in November. But they didn;t they offered a free for all.

Just like when they send schools back in January another shit decision which is going to leave people thinking so why did I not celebrate Christmas with my family?

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 18:13

By leaving the ' school problem' on the back burner will make people think ' sod it' and see family at Christmas. After all if they can go back to school ... etc etc.
It's the elephant in the room they like to ignore , either that or they are still deciding what to do and what Gavin thinks..
good luck with that.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 23/12/2020 18:34

Judging by what i have heard about supermarkets here it was a bit free for all and busy , long ques at butchers as well if people collecting meat etc , and the town generally busy
I think everyone expecting more restrictions , so getting out why they can. I still don't see why everyone can't have another household as a bubble whilst under strict lockdown just to help people not feel so trapped / alone .
Its hard work being locked up with your own family 24/7 as much as you love them.
We do all this and then schools go back as normal it just seems pointless as 30 odd kids in one small room has got to be worse than 6 adults in a front room all being careful

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 23/12/2020 18:37

@Sobeyondthehills but it started going down in november a little after lockdown which was a half in out lockdown
Its the pubs I feel sorry for they have all spent a lot on measures , keep customers apart and all the ones I have used , really go above and beyond to follow rules.
Meanwhile i was in a chain take away bakery and although they have guard up , the staff behind were not wearing masks and def not 2 m away from each other as just not the space
Also drive thrus you are closer than 2 m when you grab food unless you have super long arms

Sobeyondthehills · 23/12/2020 18:45

@donewithitalltodayandxmas it was going up in my area. Which is probably why I am in tier 4 now

HateIsNotGood · 23/12/2020 19:21

They're probably using up the stock of tests earmarked for School Testing for the trapped HGV Drivers, which I completely agree with
as all most want to do is get home. Maybe France could offer a fast-track for French Drivers - dedicated Ferries and tested on arrival in their Home Country?

Anyways, the next few months are really going to hurt a bit, some really drastically, many not so much, with a few gaining even.

There will probably be an increase in lockdown restrictions, staggered school starts, as they test the younger end and vax the older end until test and vax 'meet'.

My approach to maintaining sanity is to have no expectations, blame no one, keep everything simple, keep bills down where I can and enjoy my own company whilst remembering that there's plenty in a far worse position than me.

I'd just like to give all those LPs out there who do it all completely alone some Flowers.

For practicing Christians, Easter is more important than Christmas. So for people who see this as a religious, not secular, celebration, it's the second of our two festivals massively affected.
